Is it possible to make money selling cakes?

The Simple answer is YES. It is possible for you to start earning thousands of Naira in monthly revenue selling cakes.

Dear Caker,

Think about this.

 When you first started your cake business, what did you think it would be like?

  • making money from baking cakes all day long

  • I will be able to quit my 9-5 job;

  • I don’t have to be waking up early each morning, going through traffic and being in a job that I hate;

  • I will finally be able to spend more time with my children;

  • I can work from home;

  • I will be financially independent;

  • I don’t have to depend on my spouse or relations for money;

  • I can finally contribute financially to the household.

But once you made my decision, you soon realized that this cake business thing is a lot harder than you thought. It’s not a small thing at all.

 You started dealing with such things like:

  • Where are these customers?

  • I am not making any money

  • Why do I people don’t like paying for my cakes?

  • How do I price my cakes?

  • Ingredients are expensive so how and when should i increase my price?
  • How come Iyabo cake business is doing much better than me and i started before her?

  • Why am I not making any profit?

In fact you are just tired and fed up and feel like giving up and maybe going to find a job. At least i will be getting a salary each month.

But you know deep down that is not what you want really.

 Let me tell you a true story:

 When became a single mum, i know i had to make serious changes in my life. Even though I had a fairly good job, I realized that my humble salary was not enough to take care of me and my children needs.

 I had always had a passion for baking, so I decided to start selling cakes. My friends for a long time used to tell me that I should go into business selling cakes but I lacked the confidence to do it. When my children demands increased, it dawned on me that I needed a side hustle to supplement my income. I thought it would be a breeze selling cakes to the public. How wrong I was. I really struggled to make any sales. Even my friends hardly patronized me.

 I knew my cakes were good and of good quality, but still people were not buying. I felt like giving up and didn’t know how to market my cakes to make enough sales where I would be able to make serious money to enable me quit my 9-5 job and have more time to spend with my kids.

 I knew I needed a change, so I spent many a sleepless nights learning how to market my cake business to the right target .I experimented on different strategies and applied it to my business and knew what gave me optimum results and what didn’t.

 Almost a month later, I started getting results. My fellowship and orders started increasing steadily. I even had to enlist the help of some of my family members to help me with my orders. I  get hits on my website- Three Sisters Cake & Pie Company from other countries. I was also getting a lot of inquiries from my subscribers to give them advice on running a cake business. In fact I was becoming quite an expert in my field. And the best part in all of this is that I now have a steady stream of income coming in each month.

Planning Your Home Based Cake Business

When we start out making cakes as a hobby, most of us find ourselves magically in business without really meaning to.

One day we make a cake for a few friends, and then someone asks you to make a cake for a price, and then before you know it you’re in business!

The decision to stay at home or having a shop is based on many different factors – money, lifestyle, the kind of product you make, who your target market is and so on. There is a lot more to it than this list, but here are some things to think about if you’re going to consider having a home based cake business:

  • The overheads for running a home based business are generally lower. Some (not all) of your costs simply won’t apply in a home environment, for example you will be dealing with a whole lot of local authority permissions when having a shop. The bonus to having less overheads is having more profit.
  • It can be a great way to try out having a business. I’m not suggesting you go in and out of business overnight, but the outlay to starting from home is small enough that if you decide that business is not for you, it’s a lot simpler and faster to close down.

  • It can be a challenge to have a work and family balance and to keep your work space as your work space without interruption from your kids, but on the plus side, your children can learn from you. Kids learn a lot by watching you work and are happier to have you around making flowers than not have you around because you’re at your shop.
  • Space, or rather a lack of space, can either be a challenge  or teach you how to work very efficiently. You will find out that being in the cake business requires a lot of equipment and space.
  • There is a perception (an unfair one) that prices from home-based cake businesses should be less than those at a cake shop, so you’ll need to consider that when doing your marketing and branding.
  • Strangers will know where you live. This isn’t a big deal, and there are ways to manage it (don’t put your whole address on your website) but it’s something to think about it. Your privacy becomes less private than you might like!

  • Working from home is a lot more flexible, but that also means it potentially gives you less personal time as well. Working from home requires a fair amount of self discipline because it’s so much easier to “just answer this last email,” or take that call at 5pm on a Sunday night.

  • Clients will expect that you are more available because you work from home, so they will be really late or really early to pick up their cakes. They will also expect that you work to their timetable of when it’s convenient for them to pick up or meet. They assume because you work from home you sit around all day waiting for them. You’re going to be firm and discipline them about your availability, which is sometimes hard to do.

Essential Social Media Tools to Run a Successful Home based Cake Business

Are you a bit skeptical about this Social media thing? Or you have no idea how to use social media for your home based cake business?  Or you don’t know how social media can benefit your cake business.

There are various social media platforms out there and frankly you can be a bit overwhelmed by all of them. But luckily you don’t have to be on all of them.

You should know that Social media is a good investment for your home based cake business.

Once you know where your target market hangs out and what tools they are using, you can now invest your time in maintaining the accounts.

The Golden Rule of running a successful social media campaign: Don’t bite off more than you can chew.

 It’s better to have just 2 great accounts than 5 or 6 forgettable accounts. It’s best to pick two social media tools that works for you and be excellent at it, than wearing yourself thin using all the social media platforms out there.

Here’s a rundown of my favourite social media marketing tools to use,so you can choose which ones will be the perfect fit for you.

Facebook

Facebook is a great platform for reaching out to customers of all ages; adults, teens and mostly women. A great place to share your cake pictures, contact information, , testimonials and reviews and having that space to engage personally with your customers is great for building a better relationship.

Tip: Facebook has an affordable advertising program that can help you to target your specific customers. Setting up a page is easy and fast (take a look to our guide: How To Create A Facebook Page) .

Facebook is also great because you can also schedule the posts, so you can now plan out the perfect time to update your post, according to your customers’ online habits.

Twitter

Twitter is perfect for those bakers who are location independent and perfect for keeping your customers up-to-date!

Also, it is okay to update your account multiple times a day without annoying your followers.

Tip: Studies show that a tweet with a picture will get retweeted more. So add in your creative cake picture if you want your tweets to get retweeted.

Instagram

Instagram is very visual, so having a good cake picture is very important. Good lighting, focus and a good layout is also essential. But if all else fails, use a filter. Studies show pictures with filter gets more likes than those without.

Instagram is also great for showcasing your creations, reviews from customers and behind the scene pictures (in the kitchen baking your cake, shopping for ingredients in the supermarket etc). People love that! It makes them feel like they can get to know you more intimately.

Tip: 90% of Instagram users are below the age 35 so use hashtags to target potential customers.

Youtube

Youtube is a great way to showcase your talents. You can post up tutorials, recipes and product reviews.

It allows you to communicate certain topics more effectively (like how to make that incredible detailed Frozen figurine or that gravity defying cake) than pictures and words.

Tip: Go ahead, let your personality shine through and update consistently. Who knows, you may get endorsed by a big brand.

Pinterest

Like Instagram, Pinterest is a highly visual tool. It is mostly used by females around the age of 30 – 50 years old with higher income .

Pinterest is great for building your branding image.

Tip: To get more exposure, add the free Pinterest page app to your facebook page to promote your Pinterest presence.

Website

A website is essential for your cake business, if you are ready to take your business to the next level.

Why? Because you will have better control of your branding, marketing, what information to put up or not and heighten your customers shopping experience with you by setting up a shopping cart or an online shopping system.

Tip: If you love to connect with your customers with stories and personal experiences, you can do that with the blog update too. You can create a website by yourself, its quite easy, just click here for our guide: (To setting up your Website for your cake business).

This guide should give you an idea of what social media networks will get you the most results from social media marketing.

So what social platform are you using now? Is t working for you?

I would love to hear your experience.Share them in the comments below.
