Choosing A Business Name For Your Cake Business

Choosing a name for your cake business can be a fun or a daunting task. It can be fun thinking of the different combination of names you can use or it can be quite scary since you want to get it right.

Well,  choosing a business name is very vital when starting your cake business, because this is what sets you apart from others and gives your business its own unique personality.

sp40
My True Story
When I started  Three Sisters Cake and Pie Company, the idea behind the name was that I wanted to create a platform where I and my younger 2 sisters could join our skills to form a business venture. We wanted to create a family orientated business where I will be in charge of cakes, one sister will be doing pies/pastries the third sister will be in charge of creating chocolates. Nice idea but we well could not call it Three Sisters Cake, Pie and Chocolate Company. How will I create a website with such a long name and will it even fit on a signboard?  So we decided on just calling it Three Sisters Cake and Pie Company and we shortened the website to 3sisterscakeandpiecompany. I feel the name is still a bit long but I like it.
Today i just want to give you some tips on how to decide on your business name, that is if you haven’t done so yet.

But the most vital advice i can give you is to:

KEEP IT SIMPLE

As you know there are a number of cake businesses in Nigeria, so your name has to stand out from the others. The name you choose has to be memorable so customers and would be customers can remember you.

Also, you have to make sure you don’t sound similar to an already existing company or let the name sound crazy, like for example, calling yourself ‘’Agbalumo Kakes” in an attempt to be distinctive.
The name you choose should be practical and easy to remember. Customers are more likely to spend money when they do not have to guess what you are selling.

So what should you think about when choosing a name for your cake business. Well, let us discuss those factors:

  1. Your Name should be Associated with Cakes or Baking

You are selling cakes so don’t let there be any confusion about what you are selling

For Example:
‘Lara’s Tempting Frosting Delights’, ‘Cathy’s Enterprises’, ‘Crystalight, ‘Henry Ventures’ and ‘Diva Designs’. These names are confusing to customers because they are not sure whatis being sold.

But names like ‘House of Cakes’ or ‘Bose Cakes and Bakes’. Here it is obvious what they are selling.

You might now be wondering, do I have to add the word ‘Cake’ in the name i choose.

Well, no. You don’t really have to include the words “Cake’ in your business name if  you use other words  to describe the baked goods being sold.
Just think of a name connected with baking or cooking, such as ‘Bakes’, ‘catering’, ‘flour’, ‘buns’, ‘cuisine’, ‘sprinkles’, ‘cookie’, ‘sugar’, ‘confection’, ‘pastries’, ‘sweet’,’crumbs’, ‘fresh’, ‘love’, ‘quality’ or ‘homemade’, ‘wholesome’ (you get the general idea)

For example, “The Ice cream factory” conveys the idea of tasty ice-cream and desserts without referring to a bakery.
However, the most helpful tip here is that including a reference to cakes, cake decorating, baked goods or pastry will certainly be helpful for your potential customers to find you.

TIPMaking it clear in your business name about what you do will make it easier for people to find you. So choose the right name for your business.

sv63
2. Give yourself room to grow

Though you might start out with cupcakes, it’s possible you’ll want to branch into other areas of baking or the restaurant industry.

For instance, if you specialize in fruit cakes calling yourself “Luscious Fruit Cake Company” might sound nice at first, But what happens in a few years when you want to add cookies and dessert cakes to your product line? ‘Luscious Fruit Cake, cookies and Dessert Company’looks untidy. So choose a name that is not too specific.

Another example is ‘Lara Cupcakes & Party Planning’’. This name is not limiting as Lara may specialize in cupcakes, but the addition of  ‘party planning’ gives her some freedom to branch out into event planning.

sv60
3. Don’t choose similar names or an already existing name

Already established business names such as ‘Cakes and Creams’, ‘Cake Treats’ or ‘Cupcake Couture’ are already businesses in existence and have already been taken, so you cannot use those names, even if you’re in a different State than that business.

Those companies are already registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and I am sure there would already have a website, Twitter and Facebook page, Instagram and so on.  If you use the same name as them you are likely to get sued and will just cause confusion for your customers. So try and come up with your unique name.

In summary when choosing a business name, here are a few tips that can help you along:

  • Use your name: Including your name will help everyone know who’s boss. If your name is unusual, it will make your business that much more special.
  • Use your food: Everyone should know exactly what you’re selling. Is it cupcakes or pastries?
  • Location: Use your general location or street name in your business name. Even if you end up moving, where you started your business will never change!
  • Try rhymes: They are catchy and will help everyone remember your name.
  • Use adjectives: There are many words that can describe a cake or cupcake. Try using words such as sweet, tasty, or anything that portrays that word.
  • Give yourself room to grow: Though you might start out with cupcakes, it’s possible you’ll want to branch into other areas of the baking industry.
  • Do a Google Search  Make sure your name hasn’t already been taken by another business.
  • Avoid confusing names: If a name is confusing or hard to understand, it will make it that much more difficult for people to know about your business.
  • Avoid cutesy names: Kutie Kupcakez might sound like a cute memorable name, but people who are searching for that business will have a hard time finding it on search engines.

How To Keep Your Customers Coming Back

After you have made a sale, don’t just move on to the next potential customers. A customer just parted with their money for one of your cakes. So it is a good idea to keep them as a customer for life.

You should find ways to increase sales to your existing customers. It will be a lot cheaper than looking for new ones. Those existing customers have already tasted and paid for your cakes, so the hard work is already done.

Here are a few promotional ideas so that you do not lose customers and they keep on coming back for more of your awesome cakes.

1. Do not forget your customer

You should devote some time after a sale to reconnect with your customers. You can send them an email asking them if they enjoyed the cake they ordered. This is an opportunity for you to get feedback and also get a great testimonial which you can use for your social media or website by the way

You could send them a voucher where they will get a discount for their next order, or you could simply send them monthly newsletters so that you will be on their mind often.

2. Remember Things About Your Customer

Surprise your customers by remembering important details about them when you contact them. You do not need to know real personal details about your customers, it can be simple things like remembering their name, or their birthday or their spouse birthday or anniversary.

Once you have this information, you can contact them before the event and ask them if you can do the cake for their husband, or child’s birthday. It will be a surprise for them that you remembered and will take off the hassle of you dealing with last minute orders.

3. Make it Easy for customers to Contact you

If you have a website, make sure there is an area on all the pages of how hey can reach you, whether it is your phone number, or email or if you want them to order online. Do not make it difficult or hard for customers to know how to reach you.

If it is a Facebook Page you have, make sure at the top of that page are all the details of how customers can make there order. The same goes for your Instagram Page. Also, always respond in a very timely manner all your emails, social media enquirers or comments or missed calls. If you don’t you will be losing that customer.

ch11

4. Say Thank You

A simple thank you goes a long way. Show appreciation for your customers. You can express your gratitude by emailing your customers after a sale with a Thank you message.

You can even do more like sending them a discount voucher or tell them to recommend you business to their friends and if that friend makes an order they will receive a free box of cupcakes.

5. Communicate

Want your customers coming back?Ask them. Talk to your customers. You can send out feedback forms or surveys. This will give you a lot of information of how you can improve your business. And once you have that information, implement it.

Have more ideas on how to keep your customers coming back. Will love to hear them. Just comment below.

How To Make Your Cake Business Stand Out From The Crowd (Vol II)

I did a post on this topic some time back. You can read it here. But I still get a lot of emails from bakers asking how they are able to create a niche for themselves. So that is why i decided to revisit  and expand this post and add some more tips on how you can make your cake  business stand out from the numerous bakers out there.

1. Know your Brand

A strong brand will help your customers remember you.  Branding is not just about your logo or the colours you use or how your website is, it also translates to how you treat your customers and how you portray your business.

2 Give great  customer service always

They say in Nigeria, we don’t know about customers service. How may times have you been to an eatry or a supermarket and the workers don’t smile and if you ask for their help, it is like you are disturbing them.

So be an exception to the rule. No matter how you feel, give great customer service. Answer your work phone with a smile, listen to the customers. Yes, you will come across some customers that are demanding, or even rude. But, ultimately, the relationship you have with your customers is what’s going to keep them coming back for more.

So go the extra mile for your customers. They are paying you after all.

sv60

3. Create a Niche for yourself

Think about where you position yourself in the industry. Are you good at making novelty cakes, or wedding cakes or fat free cakes. Do you only use a special type of ingredient that makes your cakes so scrumptious? Think about something that makes you unique form others and use that feature to market your business. Think about what you want to be known for? For example, you could be known for making awesome cupcakes and call yourself the Cupcake Queen.

4. Make them an offer they cannot refuse

Make an offer to our customers that will make them come back for more. You could do a special deal on pastries, cupcakes or a special discount for birthday cakes.

sv61

5. Offer something of value

It is worth offering something extra to your customers. It does not have to cost you a lot of money to do this. You can just simply give existing customers a discount off their next order,  or maybe give them free delivery or you can give a free birthday card with every birthday cake? Little things like this will  can ensure that your customers keep coming back to order from you again.

6. Have Social media skills

Your business needs to be online. Use your website and social media to your advantage. Engage with your customers on social media.

If you aren’t confident with on how you can market effectively using social media – fear not! Join the waiting list here to be part of a Course to teach you how to market, price, plan and sell your cakes.

7. Market what makes you different

Whatever makes you unique of different from the others, don’t just keep it to yourself. Shout it loud. Tell this to all you potential and existing customers. The only way you can stand out from the crowd is telling your customers so.

sv62

8. Try something different

Why don’t you be different from the norm. Expand your product line and do different type of cake designs. Do something that is totally different from what is out there. And when you do market it superbly on social media.

9. Enter cake competitions

This is a great exposure for your brand, and you don’t have to win. Just need to enter. When you enter cake competitions, there is always press and you can take pictures for your website. So this will show people that you are a serious cake business owner and your brand can sky rocket. It will also help you to improve your networking and presentation skills.

If you are struggling with getting customers for their cakes, I have designed an online course that will solve this problem by showing you how to market, sell, price, plan, structure and brand your business so you are constantly selling to the right people who want your cakes.

I know selling your cakes is a major struggle for most bakers, so this November I will be launching an Online Course that will show you how to sell your cakes so that at least you can earn some money for Christmas.

How To Achieve Your Baking Income Goals By The End Of The Year

We are at the last quarter. Very soon we will be celebrating Christmas.

Where did all the time go i wonder?

I want you to ask you a question. Since January this year to now, what have you achieved?

I was taking a look at some of my goals that i wrote down in January, and yes i am happy that i have achieved a bit, but there were a number of goals that i am yet to do or even start. I started to feel bad thinking of my unfinished goals, but then I thought of all what i I achieved so far and still i have like 2 months left to get started on the others.

That is why i am so adamant about having goals, You cannot just wander through life doing things haphazardly. We all need direction and the only way you can do this is to have a goal and once you know what you want, you can start making plans to implement those goals.

I remember a post i did some months back about how you can make One Million naira in one year selling cakes. And how can you achieve that? It is by having a plan and in that post i detailed a plan on how you can achieve this figure in one year or less. You can read and get the N1,000,000 plan here.

So I am sure most of us like me want to have or earn a certain amount of money by year end or have achieved something in their cake business by 31st December 2017, so that i why i am creating something just for you.

If you are struggling with getting customers for their cakes, I have designed an online course that will solve this problem by showing you how to market, sell, price, plan, structure and brand your business so you are constantly selling to the right people who want your cakes.

What Does Being Independent Mean To You?

Nigeria celebrated its Independence on 1st October. It has been 57 years since we gained our independence and we all know we have come a long, both in good and bad.

Most of us don’t really think much about Independence Day. We just welcome the extra day we do not have to go to work or school. But a country gaining Independence is a great deal. Our ancestors fought and died for our independence so we should not take this lightly and no matter how you think how the country is, we are truly blessed.

So what does it mean to be independent. Are you truly independent?

Growing up, my mindset was so different. I depended on my parents for almost anything especially money and even when i started working as a lawyer and earning my own money, I never thought about saving or investing my earnings.

My thinking was that when I get married, my husband will take care of all my needs. I was just going to transfer my dependence from my parents to my husband. So it was a rude awakening when my marriage failed and it was up to me to bring up my 2 girls myself.

So that was how my dream of starting my cake business came about and it then led to the Baking Business School where i teach bakers how to run profitable business. And i thank God that my business is growing every day.

So back to my previous question. Will you consider yourself truly independent? If an opportunity comes up for you to invest in land, will you be able to come up with the cash without asking for a loan. Are you able to pay your rent or children’s school fees when due without flustering, having the choice and means to drop everything and have a vacation of a lifetime.

The definition of being Independent is not depending on another for livelihood or subsistence. Being free from outside control or not subject to another’s authority.

So tell me isn’t that something to aspire to. Don’t you want your cake business to give you the means to be independent?

I want this for you and all our businesses, so here are some things you should start doing in your cake business:

Know you are in business

Stop seeing yourself as a hobby baker, even if you are selling to your sister or a close friend.

As a business owner, things become different. You are now a professional baker and you should see and portray yourself as such.

sw56

Keep track of your expenses

You have to keep track of what you are spending. You have to form this habit or keeping bookkeeping books and keeping receipts and not using your personal money to pay for cake stuff. A helpful guide is a webinar I did- Booking Systems for Cake Businesses. Click here and here to watch.

Don’t wait for customers to just miraculously appear

Customers are not going to magically appear. They just don’t fall from the sky. Yes it will be lovely if that happens. You have to go out there are find them. And that means you have to market your business to the hilt. If not you will just be staring at the sky, wondering why you are not making any money. I have a Marketing Course that can help. Here are the details.

Stop Discounting and negotiating too much

Do you once a potential customer starts complaining about your price or question your pricing or do not immediately order, you start offering discounts.

I know especially when you first start and really want to make a sale you give discount, offer extras, and promise all sorts of things just to get that order.

The problem with this, is that It might set of a trend and sooner or later you will be known as the cheap baker and you will be working for next to nothing.

Be More Confident

Be sure of your worth and your skills. Don’t view yourself as a beginner or a learner. When you are describing your business or describing a cake you want to do for a customer, always talk in a confident tone.

Own the conversation.  Give ideas and don’t just accept whatever the customer wants. If you don’t do this, people will see you just as a learner, even though you may be the best baker in town. Don’t be scared of charging high prices. Articulate why someone should pick you to make their cakes over another brand, and you can easily say No to the customers who price you cheaply.

Don’t be a Jack of all trades

You are one of those people that have multiple businesses. You not only sell cakes, but also clothes, shoes, toys. You also are a network marketer.  You need to concentrate on one thing or at least a similar line of business. People will just get confused not knowing what exactly you do. In your profile you advertise all sort of stuffs. If you are serious about your cake business and want to make a success of it, then you should let go of the others and concentrate on cake.

These are steps you can take right now to having a more successful cake business which will lead you to being more independent.

So what does independence mean to you. Will love to hear from you. What will you do if you were truly financially independent? Just comment below.
