Before you sell your cakes… Do this

Don’t you wish selling was easy. Imagine a world where people are lining up to buy your cakes. Your phone is ringing off the hook with orders. You have a waiting list. Once you put up a picture of your cakes on Facebook or Instagram, you get over a 1000 likes and comments. You’re are being featured in magazines, newspapers as the ultimate cake queen/king.

Now wont that be wonderful.

I saw a video online, where the American store- Costco (similar to Shoprite but much bigger) opened a branch in China. On the first day it opened, people had to wait for over 3 hours in a queue just to park their cars to enter the store. You should see the people rushing to buy foodstuff. It was like a stampede. They even had to close the store early because of the crowd. I prayed that this is the type of ‘problem’ I will like in my business. Lol. Too many customers wanting to buy from me.

Tell me! Wont you like this ‘problem’?

Zig Ziglar is one of the most popular motivational speakers and salesman. He taught people how to sell almost anything.

He said this popular quote, ‘You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want’.

One of the sales teaching popular with the Zig Ziglar Corporation is TRUST:

T – Think: write down a list of reasons why someone would buy your cakes Don’t just say they taste nice. Think of things unique to you and your business.

R – Relate: introduce yourself. Try to build a degree of rapport and trust. Find out what matters to THEM. Find about their challenges, their goals, obstacles. It is about THEM not you.

U – Uncover the Need: after you learn more about them, help them uncover their need with open-ended questions like “it sounds like you’re having issues with picking the right cake for your husband’s 50th birthday?. How does picking the right colour theme affect that day?…how much do you think it will cost making that celebration awesome ?.

S – Sell the Solution: once you feel you have ascertained the problem and If you feel you have a solution, use THEIR words to test that theory. Match whatever benefits your product provides with their specific needs.

After you’ve done this you can try a trial close. For example “you said you felt ‘worried’ at having to deal with planning your husband 50th birthday, and that you don’t have enough time plan as your office hours are long. If I told you I had an all in one package to address these problems and help you give a worthy party for your husband (their main priority), would this be of interest?” If they say ‘yes, that would be really helpful’, then you can move to the next step.

If they say ‘no’, then you might have jumped straight into the S without enough U. Objections happen when you haven’t done a good enough job of uncovering the need, or R (e.g. they don’t really trust you)

T – Take Action: this might include them making an order by them giving a deposit or securing a consultation with you, or  a call-back time OR if they are interested straight away (which you should take advantage of while they are a hot lead) is to just say, “how would you like to pay for it today?”

This whole process can seem overwhelming to beginners, but in reality it is a conversation between one human to another.

Sales is an art and you get better as you practice your skill.

So continue practicing and you’ll see your sales increase in time.
