How to write a Cake Business Proposal (free sample included)

A few days ago, my younger daughter won her school’s annual spelling bee.

This is quite an achievement. She came first out of the whole school, that is form Year 1 to Year 6.

I am extremely proud of her because I know she worked so hard.

My daughters are as different as chalk and cheese.

The older one is very smart and because she is smart she finds it easy to grasp things very easily. You just have to teach her something once and she has gotten it. Doing her homework is a breeze. No matter the complexity of her assignments, she does it without any difficulty.

My younger daughter on the other hand is different. It takes her a little time to understand, so it does take her a little more time to do her homework.

So while her sister would have finished her homework in what seems like just minutes, she has to spend more time and perhaps ask for help.

The older one usually wins most competitions in school.

Her younger sister used to get very upset about this. But I had to sit her down and tell her that we all have different strengths and that if you want something you have to work hard and study.

So when the spelling bees competition came up, I noticed that the younger one took it very seriously. Even after doing the usual practice run with both of them, I will see the younger one in her spare time practicing her spelling, even at bedtimes.

The older one of course practised very hard, but guess she didn’t take it as seriously as her younger sister.

How to write a Cake Business Proposal, Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

As they went off to school the morning of the competition , I could see the younger one was nervous but the older was happy and confident.

After school I half expected the older one to come up running to me with her winning certificate to add to all the ones she has won preciously. But I was greatly surprised to find out that the younger one had not only won but had come first out of the whole school.

Her certificate is now placed prominently in front of our fridge.

So why am I telling you this story.

We all run different races. Some are faster than others.

As humans we compare ourselves to others. We cannot help it.

We entrepreneurs look at other businesses and see their content and likes on social media, and their supposed plethora of customers.

How to write a Cake Business Proposal, Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

But we have to realise that everything has its time. You may not be as successful as the other baker, but your time is coming.

Continue to work hard, see what those successful bakers are doing and adapt it to yourself. Go out and meet your target customers, take Courses to learn more and most importantly believe in yourself

Also those who are successful now, please do not rest on your laurels. You have to constantly innovate because people are close behind you and could overtake you if you are found slacking.

A quote by Stephen Chow said, ‘ If you can keep  going and never give up, ultimately you will get something that you really want’.

On another note, I have been getting messages from my Baking busines School WhatsApp group about how to write business proposal

A business proposal is a basically a document that’s designed to persuade an organization to buy a product or service. Which is different from a business plan which in its simplest form, is a guide, a roadmap for your business that outlines goals and details how you plan to achieve those goals

So lets say you want to start supplying cupcakes to supermarkets in your area or you want to pitch to a client about catering their event. It is always a good idea to go with a business proposal in hand.

How to write a Cake Business Proposal, Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

Here are the 5 steps to writing a successful business proposal:

  1. Get as much information about the company or client;
  2. What are your objectives? What services will you be providing?
  3. How much are you going to charge?
  4. Start writing Your Business Proposal.
  5. Send your proposals out and Follow-Up.

To give you a helping hand I have included a sample business proposal for you so you can just adapt it to the particular organisation or client you wish to do business with.

In this sample proposal, Bose Cakes & Bakes is pitching to a mother to a bride to be the event planner for her daughter’s wedding.

Just go to this link to download this sample proposal template.

5 ways to let the world know about your Cake Business

Nobody knows about my business? How many of you have said this or even thought about this?

Running a business has its own challenges and the last thing that you want to happen is people not even knowing you exist. But this is the reality for most cake business owners in Nigeria.

The more people that know you, the more likely you will get customers for your business.

You want customers and you want everyone to know what your are selling, which are cakes.

Maybe you’ve gotten a few customers under your belt, but because they are some people who are paying for your cakes doesn’t mean that your business is known state wide, nationwide or even worldwide.

Who doesn’t want worldwide domination for your cakes? I am sure you do.

So here are 5 ways to let the world or at least the locality where you live know about your business:

5 ways to let the world know about your Cake Business, Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

Brand your vehicle

Do you have a car? Great. Then let your car be an asset instead of a liability. Use your car to your best advantage. A branded vehicle with your company logo, phone number and website is an easy way to get the word out.

When I’m out and about in Lekki I always see a purple small vehicle which advertise a clean up service. First the colour of the car is noticeable and I always see I around. So if I need a clean up service, who will I think of first? The name on the purple vehicle.

So advertising your business on your car is a good way to go.

If you do not have a car, you can brand yourself. Get different t-shirts and print your logo on them. Wear those shirts when you are running your errands, so that people around your locality can see you in them.

5 ways to let the world know about your Cake Business, Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

‘Free’ is the magic word

People like getting free stuff. So why don’t you give out free samples of your cakes.

Giving away samples of your cakes for free can do wonders for your business.

First, it lets people out there know that you exist.

Second, it gives you a chance to let people taste your awesome cakes, so they can spread the word.

Third, it provides your future customers with a risk-free way to try out your cakes without spending any money. And if customers love it, they will be willing to pay money for it.

Let’s say Hope just moved to a new state wants to open a cake shop in her neighbourhood and she’s looking for a simple, cheap and effective way to advertise and kickstart her new business.

She decides to put up a sign in front of her cake shop that reads: ‘Free box of cupcakes. First 20 People Only’. This reads like a sign that will definitely catch a lot of attention, right?

That is the power of free!

Anybody who walks into her shop for their free box of cupcakes and loves them will happily return next time to pay for it and will likely tell his friends, colleagues and neighbours about the ‘cool’ new cake shop down the road.

Most people have a weakness for the word ‘free’. In their minds, it’s another opportunity to enjoy or use something without spending any money.

Customers love ‘free’ because they have nothing to lose; they just sit back, relax and enjoy the product without any risk.

By drawing them into your business, you give them a chance to see and experience something that would have been totally hidden from them if you didn’t open your door.

However, you must make sure that the free stuff WILL NOT last forever. From the outset, determine the number of people who will enjoy the free stuff or how many days the promo will last.

Not everybody should get free stuff; it’s the scarcity element that makes it very appealing.

5 ways to let the world know about your Cake Business, Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

Say “Yes!” to opportunities

If you want to spread the word about your business, you should try to say yes when someone asks you to come to an event or for a speaking engagement.

If people know you are willing to go an extra mile for people, they’ll be likely to talk about and remember you and your business. It’s all about creating new relationships.

Plus, if you don’t say yes, you might be missing out on opportunities to meet potential customers.

5 ways to let the world know about your Cake Business, Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

Ask Customers to Recommend and Refer You

If you have happy customers, ask them to recommend your business to their friends. Suggest they write about you on your social media sites.

An example of an email you can send is:

‘ Hello, Thank you for your recent order. I hope you had a wonderful celebration.

I know you are very busy but I would appreciate it  if you could write a positive review or recommendation about me on (insert the necessary link). Thank you.’

5 ways to let the world know about your Cake Business, Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

Know about SEO

SEO means search engine optimization.

SEO makes you searchable on the internet. If Google can’t find you, no one else can. If you’re selling iced cookies, you want people to find you when they search “iced cookies in Lagos.

To become more popular online, you need SEO to succeed.

So to get started on SEO, use keywords related to your business. Post awesome content on all your social media sites. If you have great content, people will want to talk about you.

Now tell me what strategy are you going to employ be gain worldwide recognition. Comment below I will love to know.

Easy Guide to Get Sales in your Cake Business

This past week I held some one to one coaching sessions with some of you that registered.

I got so much requests for coaching sessions that it was quite overwhelming. There  was a limit to the number of people I could personally coach, so I apologise if you registered for one and I could not get to you.

I plan to do another round in another few weeks, so look out for that.

One common thread with many of you when I was holding the coaching session was that you were finding it difficult to sell your cakes. In other words, Marketing is a challenge for many.

Marketing is the only way you can make the sales.

Marketing is the only way you can make the money you want in your business.

During my coaching session, I kept hearing the same story.

Abi asked ‘How do I source customers’, Dami was confused on ‘how to create awareness for my products’, Funola asked‘ how do I make sales’ and Omo was like, ‘ how do I get orders from people around me’.

The questions were all different but all dealt on selling.

So this week I want to disclose to you some of my answers I revealed to them in my coaching sessions.

Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

There are opportunities all around you

Your customers are everywhere. You might not believe it right now. But your next customer is among the people around you.

Look are areas and people around your locality where you can market your business.

Do you live near schools, a university, offices, churches. Even though you are a shy person or don’t have friends, start with what you have.

Do you have a child in school? Start form there. Ask to sponsor their next PTA event with some nicely decorated cupcakes. Schools are a great source of customers because that is where your target customers are- which are mothers,.

At such events, you don’t just drop your cupcakes and leave. Market yourself. Go to people and ask them if they liked the cupcakes, tell them you are avaliable to make various baked good for their occasions and of course give them your business cards.

When you do this continually for like 2-3 events at the school. You will see that your brand reach will be increasing and eventually you will get more sales.

This same strategy also applies to places like churches and offices. Provide a  few free samples and talk about your business. Do this and watch the orders come in.

Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

Brand yourself

Branding is very important. We want people to associate you with cake. So how do you do this?

As you go about your daily activities, like while dropping your children at school, going to the market, making a delivery, wear a branded t-shirt of your business.

You can buy different coloured t-shirts from the market. Then find someone to print your logo on the t-shirts. You can even print funny slogans on some of the t-shirts like ‘ Want cake, call me’, ‘a party without cake is just a meeting’; ‘you can’t buy happiness but you can buy cake’.

When you do this, you may not notice it but people are watching. Your brand is registering in their heads subconsciously. So do not be shy about using yourself to advertise your busines.

Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

Have a cake party

One strategy I told a member in one of my coaching sessions was the idea of having a cake party.

She mentioned to me that she lived near a polytechnic. I told her she could have a lot of business from the students. I told her that if she knew one person who lived in a hostel she could have a cake party where she will offer free samples of her cakes, pastries and other baked goods to the students.

She could print flyers to distribute to students inviting them to sample free cake. At the party, students will have a chance to sample her products, she can have one on one conversation with them. She can then distribute her menu of items or her business cards to those that attended.

The wonderful thing is that you have all your target customers in one room, so this is the most excellent opportunity for you to project the best version of your business and to market to your ideal clients.

Baking Business School, Rotimicakelady

Use a Broadcasting system

Lastly let me give you a bonus strategy for getting more customers. In one session, a lady informed me that she gets a lot of repeat customers. I told her that was good and she should capitalise on that.

She should create a database of those customers and send them periodic emails or texts. She should also contact them before a person’s birthday in their household and ask them to book a cake for a special price offer.

Another strategy I spoke about was to encourage her current customers to refer her business. She could start a campaign by sending out a message to her current customer base saying that if their friends orders a cake from you,  they will get a free box of cupcakes.

These are just a few strategies I discussed in my coaching session. Of course these strategies are just a snippet of what you will learn in the ultimate marketing course you can get for cake business owners.

This bestselling marketing course is called The ultimate guide to marketing your cake business.

Marketing can be done in a number of different ways and this course will show you how to effectively strategise your marketing plan to make more sales.

How to Market your Cakes using Instagram

Most of us I hope are on Instagram.

Instagram is a must have platform for your cake business if you want more visibility and exposure for your business brand and it is free.

In recent years, Instagram has become increasingly vital as a marketing tool for your business.

I’m sure you think that being on Instagram is just a way to showcase your cake pictures or when you are out and about. Yes that is good, but if that is all you are doing, you are not maximizing the full use of Instagram and really you are selling yourself short.

Do you know Instagram can help you to get more sale and customers?

Some bakers have had great sale success being on Instagram because they know how to use it correctly.

This week I want to show you how you can get orders and sales from just using your Instagram account.

How to Market your Cakes using Instagram, Baking Business School

Always Use #Hashtags

Hashtags are an important way to promote your business across social platforms by connecting it to searches and discovery relevant to your target audience.

Hashtags are a great way to attract new customers and grow your online presence as users searching a particular hashtag you’ve used can come across your account and engage with you thereby becoming new followers and potential customers.

But for you to gain the maximum benefit of hashtags means that you have to Hashtag everything. That is, every single photo and post, must bear some sort of hashtags so that you become search-able through your hashtags.

For example if you post a picture of a red velvet cake, you can use some of these hashtags, #cake, #redvelvetcake #redvelvet #cupcakes and so on.

To get more information about using hashtags for your business, I have a mini course that can help. Get it here:

How to market your cakes using Instagram

Our Mini Courses deal with different aspects of the cake business to help and guide you in making your cake business more successful and of course profitable.

Get More info Here:

Use Instagram Stories

Adding videos really work. And it doesn’t have to be a long video and if you are shy, you may not even have to appear. Let someone take a video of you piping a cake.

It has been proven countless times that people engage more with businesses who post videos.

Here is how post an Instagram story:

  • Go to your profile page on instagram and press the round button where your picture is;
  • To add a picture, just press the middle round button;
  • To add a video, just continually press that same round button;
  • Then press the ‘your story’ button;

And that is it, you now have an instagram story.

How to Market your Cakes using Instagram, Baking Business School

Do Sponsored Ad’s

Sometimes you may need to reach a wider audience, so to do this; you will need to pay for a sponsored ad.

This is where you pay to advertise your product. So when next you want to promote a deal, discount, or sale, try to do an Instagram promotion and watch your followers, inquiries and orders come piling in.

To promote a post, just go to the post in question and press the ‘promote’ button and follow the instructions. You can promote a post for a few days for just $3 which is about N1,000.

How to Market your Cakes using Instagram, Baking Business School

Spend Time On Your Bio

You should spend time writing a great Bio. Your Bio is where people will know what you do and what you are about. If you are into cupcakes, your bio should reflect that.

Your Bio doesn’t have to be one long sentence. It can just be a list of what you do. You can say you are the ‘ultimate cupcake master’ or ‘call me to order your unique cupcakes’. You can even add emoji’s and hashtags to your bio just to make it a little more fun.

How to Market your Cakes using Instagram, Baking Business School

Add A link

You are allowed to post one URL or link in your Bio so use it well. Do you want people to go to your website or Facebook page. Whatever the case, post the link you want potential customers to go to know about your business or to contact you. Also adding a url is great if you have a opt in page so that you can collect their email address.

If you feel just posting on link is not enough, you can use the Linktree App to post numerous links on your page.

It’s My Birthday

Give it up to all April babies. Today is my birthday.

Since I’ve been self-employed I made the decision to never work on my birthday. Doesn’t that sound great? These are some of the benefits you get when you work for yourself :)!

As it is my birthday I and a few friends treated ourselves to a vacation in Abu Dhabi. I have been here for a few days and what a wonderful time I have been having.

There is nothing like giving yourself a break form work and hopping on a plane to go on a holiday.

As I woke up this morning and laid in bed, and looked at my awesome Abu Dhabi skyline. I couldn’t help but reflect not only on my cake business journey when I decided to do this full time, but also my life as a whole.

If I was still in my 9-5 job, I doubt I would be able to take a few days off on the whim and travel.

Since I became a cake business coach, I have learnt a lot about myself, about what I want to be, the type of person I am, the limit of what I can take,  the decisions I want to make, the people I want in my life, the mother I want to be and of course the type of business I want to have.

And there’s so much to learn still.

I thank God I’ve had such an incredible life thus far and I’ve been blessed with so many good things.

So, to celebrate my birthday I’ve put together a little list of some of the most important things I’ve learned so far.

Also enjoy some of my pics from my trip.

You are stronger than you think

Life is not easy as you know. I have gone through challenges. I have had highs and lows. Being an entrepreneur can test you to your limit. There will be days when you will be broke and no customers and there will be days when you have so many orders and have to attend to many things that you can hardly keep up.

Being a cake business owner is not a straight line to success, its full of twists and turns, loops, rings and circles. The only advise I can give you is to just keep on going. Better days are coming. I am a testament to that.

No matter what, people will always criticise you

We do not live in a perfect world. It is not always butterflies and rainbows wherever you go.  We’ve all been criticised at one time or the other. I too have been, even by close family members. If I had listened to all the negative comments I have heard, I won’t have started Baking Business School.

My platform has helped thousands of people realise their cake business dreams, not only in Nigeria but also in other parts of West Africa, and beyond. When I feel down or depressed and feel like giving up, I think of the thousands of people who need my help, waiting for me to answer their emails, watch my videos, read my articles, It gives me the jumpstart to keep on going. Thank you guys.

So please do not listen to negative talk. Brush your shoulders and get on with your work.

Write your Goals

I am sure I do not have to hash this point. You know I am a great advocate of goal planning. Writing my goals and planning their execution has really helped me, not only in my business but my life.

I have a vision board where I paste pictures of things I want to achieve.   I don’t know how it works, but since putting pictures on my vison board, I’ve achieved a lot of my dreams and goals.

Do something scary

I remember when I got my first speaking engagement. To tell you I was scared is an understatement. I was terrified. I nearly wanted to turn it down. But I didn’t and I’m glad I did it afraid and it was a success.

How many opportunities have you lost because you were afraid? We all want to be successful, but most times for you to move to the next level, you have to get out from your comfort zone and go for it.

I too still struggle with putting myself out there, so each day I have to make a deliberate effort to be more open.

Invest in your self-development

All the knowledge I dispense is not just from personal experience. I have taken countless courses to learn a lot of things. For you to grow and be more successful, you have to invest in your education. Nowadays they are so many trainings and courses you can take even online.

Yes education cost money. But do not look at the cost. It is for the betterment of yourself and your business. So next time you see a training, don’t look at the cost, look instead at what you will learn and the benefits you will gain from such training.

So these are some of the lessons I have learnt so far, obviously this is not all but I believe these are the important bits.

This list involves things I have to work on daily as I am not definitely perfect, so need constant reminders so that is why I’m always writing things down.

Now tell me what you will write on your list.

Ok, enough writing, I’m off to celebrate.

Have some birthday cake on me.

Cheers to those celebrating their birthdays in April.

Are you running a Cake Business or an expensive hobby?

This is something many home based cake business owners struggle with, and I will admit have struggled with this in the past.

Treating your business like an expensive hobby instead of a business. You might be doing this right now but you might not know it.

So, in this blogpost I am going to help you recognise whether you are actually running a business or in fact just have a very expensive hobby.

If anything I say below rings true, then you may just be running a hobby rather than a fully-fledged business, then please go and register for my Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business Masterclass where you will be taken through the process to make sure you move away from hobby cake business owner and move into the role of a successful cake businesswoman.

You have not even registered your company

One of the first steps in setting up your business is to register it at the Corporate Affairs Commission.  Structuring your business properly from the start sets the right tone for not only yourself but for your potential customers as well.

You will appear more trustworthy and professional if you have a duly registered company. How can you expect your potential customers seriously if you too don’t take yourself seriously?

Are you running a Cake Business or an expensive hobby?. Baking Business School

You do not know how to price your cakes

I know pricing can be a real struggle for cake business owners. Most times we do not know how much we should charge for our cakes and in the end we allow ourselves to be under-priced.

People value what they pay for. If a person values what you are doing, then you should charge appropriately otherwise they will value you less and you will be known as the cheap cake lady.

You are in business to make money, so you need to charge right for your time, skill and effort you put in in crating that masterpiece of a cake.

If pricing is a struggle for you then register for my Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business Masterclass and all your pricing woes will be out to bed.

Chocolate, Whisk, Block Chocolate, Bake

You don’t know how much money you make from your business

If you don’t know how much money you are making then you also don’t know if, or when your business is making a profit or loss.

This is a clear sign your business is an expensive hobby.

The foundation of any business is in good record keeping and keeping track of your expenses. You need to have bookkeeping and accounting systems in place. This will help you monitor the finances of your business.

If you cannot tell how much you made and how much you spent in previous months, then it means you’re treating it like an expensive hobby.

So, if this is you then please, please watch my Training on Bookkeeping Systems you should have in your cake business here and here and put an end to it now with my simple actionable tactics.

Are you running a Cake Business or an expensive hobby?. Baking Business School

You know nothing about Marketing

Customers do not fall from the sky. You have to go out there to get them and the only way you can get customers is by marketing.

Marketing your business is a must. There are various marketing strategies you can employ such as social media marketing, having a blog, sending out email or sms newsletters. You need to be doing some sort of marketing on a consistent basis every day, if not; your business will find it hard to survive.

If you are unsure about marketing, then register for Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business Masterclass which has an  entire Module dedicated to Marketing.

Stop waiting for people to find you and go out and go get them.

Are you running a Cake Business or an expensive hobby?. Baking Business School

You do not keep track of your time

Do you how long it takes you to bake and decorate a cake from start to finish? How long does it take for you to give a quote for a cake, answering emails, shopping for ingredients and so on? You need to keep track of your time. Because you need to be paid for your time. You need to earn a wage for the time you use for an order.

If you feel you are worth N500 an hour, then if you spend 5 hours shopping, baking and decorating a cake, that means you will have earned N2,500. So that amount should be added to the price of your cake.

If you don’t know where you are spending your time then you have no idea what you are actually getting paid.

Are you running a Cake Business or an expensive hobby?. Baking Business School

Your family and friends don’t take your business seriously

The energy that we give off about something reflects on those around us. If you are finding that your friends treat your business like a hobby, then it’s likely you are also speaking about it in that way as well.

What kind of language do you use when you speak about your cake business? How do you stand and how do you feel? All of these signals are emitted and interpreted by those around us.

If you are upset by a friend or maybe even family members  not taking your business seriously or they keep asking you for a free or a cheap cake, then this is a sign that you probably aren’t taking your business seriously.

Are you running a Cake Business or an expensive hobby?. Baking Business School

You do not have a website because you are still deciding what logo to use

If the reason you have not launched your website is because you are still deciding on what colours, or logo or theme to use, then you really are missing the point of being in business.

Yes it’s good to get those things right, but don’t spend time and a lot of money deciding on such trivial matters. You mind should be on how to get your business out there so that people will know you and you can start making money, how to add value and how to be different from the other cake businesses out there.

So that’s it.

I have struggled with all of these in the past, and many home based cake business owners do to. And this is something that I help my clients to deal with all of the time through my coaching programs and courses.

So, if any of these are true for you don’t worry. You are not alone.

The most important step is to become aware of and identify the issue, and if you have done this by reading to the end of this article, that is a huge step, well done.

The next step is to come over and register for my Pricing your cake right to build a money making cake business masterclass and I will give you some really actionable strategies that you can implement straight away to build a more profitable and lucrative cake business.

Now tell me what steps are you going to take to make your cake business more professional? Please comment below.

5 Ways To Stop Attracting Cheap Customers

As a cake business owner, you have probably been in a situation where you felt only customers who want cheap cakes call you or you mostly attract customers who are not willing to pay the right amount for your cakes or do not appreciate the quality of work you put into a cake. For most business owners, this is not strange at all.

Most people do not know the skill, effort and resources that go into making a cake so they undervalue your work or they want to pay as little as possible.

Most times we cave into their bullying and demands and end up under pricing ourselves, making no money and then feeling bad afterwards.

These types of clients are ‘low quality’ customers, and they are everywhere so there is little you can do to change that.

Instead of trying to convince these types of customers to pay the correct price for your cakes, your business should focus on attracting ‘high end’ customers or those customers who can afford your cakes.

And here are some 5 ways to attract them:

How To Stop Attracting Cheap Customers, Baking Business School

Create a Customer Profile

To attract high-end clients, you must first know who they are, what they like, what types of cakes they like, and what products or services they need, where they are, where they go to, what attracts them and so on. Then find ways to

Finally, look at customer circumstances to create an idea of how potential customers develop an interest in your product or service. Then just go and market to them.

Doing so will give you a roadmap of what your marketing strategy will be like.

For instance, you may need to find a contact in a school in a high brow area to see whether you can sponsor an event by bringing in your cakes or provide cakes for free at their next PTA meeting. When you are in, make connections, talk to them about your business and give out your business cards.

Once you get past the “unknown and untasted” hurdle, you should have a much easier time selling to them.

How To Stop Attracting Cheap Customers, Baking Business School

2. Let Price Reflect the Quality of your cakes

If a business wants to appear thoroughly competitive and professional, the price it charges should always reflect quality like no other.

When a price is too cheap, it means the product is of low quality and so people will not expect to pay much for it.

If the business is using high quality ingredients, your website is up to par, your service is impeccable; in the mind of the wealthy, there’s no reason for your cakes to be cheap.

If your prices are higher than the rest. Then there is a reason for that. Let them see it in the services you render and also tell them why.

How To Stop Attracting Cheap Customers, Baking Business School

3. Pay attention to packaging

Good quality packaging is a great way to make your products stand out from the crowd. Not only will unique packaging make your products memorable, but packaging has been found to be one of the most important aspects when it comes to a customer’s decision to buy a product especially the high end ones.

Having beautiful packaging sets it apart from mass-produced generic offerings.

Great packaging should be part of your cake business branding and deserves plenty of attention. Presenting your products in gorgeous packaging reinforces the idea that when it comes to your bakery products that you are classy, top notch and worth the extra naira spent.

How To Stop Attracting Cheap Customers, Baking Business School

4. Offer Great and consistent Customer Service

Be ready to attend to their needs, be classy, eloquent in your phone conversations and consistently ready to help because high end clients are used to impeccable service. Also they do not like to wait.

If you are unable to give them a price at once, tell them you will give them a quote in 10 mins, and keep to that time. Send out your invoices on time. If you tell them you are to deliver at a certain time, make damn sure you arrive at that time or even before.

Also after care is important, send a thank you email asking them how their event went and if the cake was satisfactory. If it was a very big order, a few days later you can send them a thank you card with a box of cupcakes. It is all about keeping you in their mind.

How To Stop Attracting Cheap Customers, Baking Business School

5. Be willing to spend more to attract quality clients

Like attracts like. If you want to attract high income people, then your business has to appeal to them. Wear custom attire with your branded logo on it. Again pay attention to what you are posting online, upgrade your website. Get real email addresses that contain your domain name. Always be looking to be featured in the media.

You are an expert at what you are doing, so be seen as such. Do live shows on your social media platforms. Look at collaborating with companies where your target customers patronise. Advertise where you will reach quality clients.  You may need to invest time and money in branding, marketing, materials, events, technology, and lastly your personal image.

If you want to play with the big boys, you must be willing to do the work. There is no magic wand you can wave to get the customers you want, but as long as you follow these tips and make plans in your marketing strategy you should start getting the right customers.

It’s far easier to grow a successful business by targeting the higher end of the market rather than dealing with difficult consumers who argue about your price.

Just make sure you are positioned for success by creating a new marketing strategy that will target and appeal to the upper end of the market.

In the end it will be worth it!

So what strategies are you going to implement so you can attract more premium customers. Just comment below.

Cake Regards.

What other Cake Business Owners do not want you to know

Happy new month!

We are now in a new quarter. It took me a while to put my head round the fact that already 3 months have past.

I had to take a look at my 1st quarter goals and observed that I have not made as much progress as I thought I would when I set my goals in January this year.

Yes I have made good progress in some areas but there are still some areas that I really have to get a move on. Maybe I was bit over ambitious.

So while preparing my 2nd quarter goals I am going to scale down a bit and concentrate on the most important goals plus follow up on the ones I failed to achieve.

That is the key to goal setting and looking back. It helps you to take stock and revaluate.

So did you meet your 1st quarter goals?

If you didn’t, don’t beat yourself up. I too didn’t realise everything I set on my list but I know I tried. So quarter 2 is another opportunity to try again.

As every successful entrepreneur says, you should never give up.

This week, I want to share some of my best business advice and success tips I have learnt along the way so that you can crush your 2nd quarter cake business goals.

What other Cake Business Owners do not want you to know

Start Today

You can’t afford to sit around waiting for to get capital to start your business, or hoping and praying that an angel investor will come along to help you implement your idea.

If you do not have money to start your business, with as little as N5,000 you can buy ingredients and start selling cupcakes to people, so little by little you can start raising your own capital to start or buy equipment for your business.

The only way to learn is by doing, stop complaining and harbouring negative thoughts, and stop making excuses. All these won’t help you start a business and it sure won’t help you have the income you want for yourself.

What other Cake Business Owners do not want you to know

It does take longer than expected to get a steady stream of Customers and Income

I’m sure you already know this already.  Whether you started big or small, it takes time to know how to sell, market your cakes, knowing what works in your business to get customers, how to price you cakes well and how to use social media in your business.

You have to realise that the only way you can get more orders and customers is to market yourself more.

If you have no idea how to market your business, I have a Marketing course that can help. It is called  The Ultimate Guide To Marketing Your Cake Business which is a 4 Week comprehensive Cake Business Marketing Course that will guide you on all marketing techniques and strategies to promote your cake business so you can make more money.

It is not going to be easy, you will not become a millionaire overnight but with adequate planning, being positive and having enough passion you will see that your customers and income will begin to grow.

What other Cake Business Owners do not want you to know

Don’t experiment with too many recipes at the same time

You must be consistent with your recipes.

Do you have 2-3 different vanilla recipes? Once you have found a recipe you like which is tried and tested, keep to it. A customer does not want to be eating different versions of the same cake each time they make an order. Your cakes are your signature and we know a signature usually remains the same.

Also cake education is a must. You should know the different types of cakes suitable for different uses like for carving, creating tiers, doing gravity cakes, cakes suitable for our hot Nigerian weather and so on. Also what preservatives to use to make cake last and how to change recipes to suit special dietary requirements or requests.

All these knowledge will definitely put you ahead of the competition.

What other Cake Business Owners do not want you to know

Have a Good List of Suppliers

It is always convenient to have a good list of suppliers who are reliable and provide good quality, and they are readily avaliable

You do not want to have an order to create a Spongebob cake and you are looking and going from market to market, shop to shop looking for the necessary cake pan. If you have a supplier, you can just make a quick call for delivery. This way you can concentrate on creating the best cake possible for your customer.

Yes I know, it does take time to build these suppliers contacts list, however make sure you find the ones who are reliable, the prices are reasonable, have an option for delivery, give great customer service, and whose products are of good quality.

So do your research, Google and you can even ask your baker friends where they get their supplies from.

What other Cake Business Owners do not want you to know

Have a Clear Company Policy for giving Discounts

We all get these type of customers. Those you complain about our price, those who want a cakes nearly for free.

So how do you deal with these customers? Make it a point to have clear guideline as to when and who you will be giving discounts.

Know how to charge for family and friends and the general public. For example you can make it a policy to give a 40% discount for family and friends and for the general public you will only go as low as 5-15% or offer them some cupcakes instead of a discount.

It’s your business, so your rules. Don’t let a customer dictate what price or discount you should give them.

What other Cake Business Owners do not want you to know

Build Relationships

Never stop building meaningful relationships with customers and other people in the  baking and event planning industry.

Don’t really view them all as your competitors. View them instead as collaborators  or potential partners. You never know what additional business you can get from these partnerships.

What other Cake Business Owners do not want you to know

Don’t give up

Like in all businesses, you will have good and bad days. You may deal with a difficult customer, or a cake may collapse as you are delivering or a whole month may go by and you haven’t had a single customer.

Yes it is disheartening and yes you will feel like giving up but please don’t. It is only a phase. Yes cry if you want to , but after you have had your little pity party, dust yourself of the floor,  dry your tears and get on with it. The world is waiting for your cakes.

So what are your plans for the second quarter. What are you going to do differently now so that you ensure success for Q2. Will love to hear from you, just comment below.

Cake Regards.

Marketing

Marketing is the No.1 thing you must know for success in your cake. If your customers do not know you or they do not know that you sell cakes, then you will make no money.

Marketing is important because it helps you sell your cakes.

The main aim of any business is to make money and marketing is the most important way to reach that end goal.

Without you constantly marketing your cakes or brand, your cake business will not exist because it is you telling people about your business that ultimately what your sales.

Yes you may be the best baker in the world, but if you do not market, your business will fail

You need to regularly find creative ways to reach new customers and draw them in so they can buy from you. Marketing is also important for your business growth.

In essence, Marketing helps bring in sales so that you can make the income you need from your business.

The Only 3 Things You Need To Know To Succeed In Your Cake Business, Baking Business School

Pricing

Many bakers struggle with pricing their cakes. They do not know how to price their cakes, what amount to charge their cakes, how to set prices and so on. That is why we see a lot of those questions in baking platforms where bakers post a picture of a cake and ask how much to charge. The simple but frustrating answer is that no one can tell you how much you should charge.

As a business owner, you should know how much your time is worth when making a cake.

I know setting prices can be  is one of the most difficult things to set up in your business because pricing can depend on many factors such as your location, the types of cakes you sell, the type of customers you have, your local market and perhaps what your competitors charge.  However, if you want to know how to price your cakes right, you must first have a solid understanding of your own costs.

So how do you cost your Cakes?

Pricing your Cakes Right to Build a Money Making Cake Business’ Masterclass

Pricing your Cakes Right to Build a Money Making Cake Business’ Masterclass is created for bakers so that they can achieve their cake business dreams of building a moneymaking cake business.

Expand your Knowledge

Never and I mean never stop learning. To be more successful you should always be learning something new every day.

Do you know that Bill gates reads 50 book a year? This is a billionaire and yet he still reads. So what is your excuse?

This year I made a deliberate effort to read more, at least 1-2 books a month and to learn something new every day. I subscribe to a lot of educative material so they send me emails every day. I also take online courses from time to time and I go for workshops. This last weekend I went for a personal finance master class.

We only have 24 hours a day but if you track your time, we spend some time just doing nothing, you can read a few chapters from a book, watch a tutorial on you tube, take an online course. The list is endless.

Try and do something aside from working on your business on your personal development.

Here are some of the things I do to expand my knowledge

  1. Read something everyday
  2. Learn from a mentor
  3. Take an online class
  4. Attend a workshop on a subject you don’t know anything about
  5. Subscribe  and read emails from blogs where they post a lot of educative material, e.g Baking Business School
  6. Surround yourself with people who know more than you
The Only 3 Things You Need To Know To Succeed In Your Cake Business, Baking Business School

So I have given you the 3 most important things you need to know to have a more successful cake business. If you need help in any of these area, take a look at our online courses or you can send me an email at cakelady@bakingbuinessschool.com.ng   and I can point out to you the most ideal course for you.

Now, tell me what are you going to do now out of these 3?

Comment below. I’ll love to hear from you.

How To Find Your Niche In Your Cake Business

What is a niche? A Niche denotes or relates to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.

So why is finding a niche so important for your cake business?

Everyone loves cakes and that helps make it a growing market, which is good, but when you are just starting out in this business, this can be a problem.

So in order to make your cake business known in a rather crowded market, you need to find your niche.

Discovering your niche will help you set yourself apart from the competition.  This enables you have a clear area to focus on, to set a target customer base, plus it will help your customers know what you sell, which will help maximise your profits.

You might think that your customers are everyone. But if you think everyone is your customer, you are wrong. Because if you are selling to everyone, you are actually not selling to anyone.

But what niche should you choose, well that is up to you and what is your passion.

To find your niche, try and see where your strength are, are you really good at something. For example if your are really good at making toppers, you can specialise in that and supply bakery stores. Also think about what is in demand in your area.

Baking Business School, How To Find Your Niche In Your Cake Business

To help you I have listed different Cake Niches and then sub divided it further to more specialist areas:

Fondant/Sugarpaste Modelling

  • Wedding cake toppers
  • Toppers for birthday cakes
  • Character toppers
  • Fondant Flowers
  • Fondant Figurines
Baking Business School, How To Find Your Niche In Your Cake Business

Wedding Cakes

  • Buttercream tiered wedding cakes
  • Trendy wedding cakes
  • Naked wedding cakes
  • Square wedding cakes
  • Weddings with sugar roses or real flowers
Baking Business School, How To Find Your Niche In Your Cake Business

Birthday Cakes

  • Baby birthday cakes
  • Baby Shower cakes
  • Cartoon birthday cakes
  • Glamorous birthday cakes
  • Novelty birthday cakes
  • Birthday cakes for men/women/boys/girls
Baking Business School, How To Find Your Niche In Your Cake Business

Cupcakes

  • Full sized cupcakes
  • Mini cupcakes
  • Printed cupcakes
  • Muffins
  • Corporate cupcakes

And the list goes on and on.

Once you have discovered your niche you will find life becomes a little easier. Instead of catering for everyone you can target one particular segment.

This will instantly help you market your business more effectively speak your customer’s language, you know the particular product you are selling, and you know a defined target customer.

Baking Business School, How To Find Your Niche In Your Cake Business

Let me give you instances of two bakers’, and try and spot the difference. And see which one appeals to you more?

Bose Cakes & Bakes – This baker creates cakes for everyone, for all types of occasions, birthdays, christenings, baby showers, weddings, retirements, charity events and much more. She does it, Bose wants to attract every type of person, but there is only one of her. She works all hours, takes last minute orders, hardly makes a profit, has no business style and is so stressed.

Vs.

Sweetie’s Specialty Cakes  – This baker creates novelty cakes exclusively for big birthday celebrations.  She is focused; she understands the type of cakes she likes to make, so she can charge a premium sum.

If you want a wedding cake, she will turn you down and recommend you to another cake maker.

Sweetie books cakes into her diary months and even years in advance. She turns a healthy profit and her future’s looking bright.

In short finding your niche will help your business have focus, you will be able to charge a premium and ultimately it will help you climb the ladder of success.  So get out there and find your niche!

So what’s your niche? Have you found it yet? Comment below. Will love to hear from you.

Business Structures to have In your Cake Business (part 2)

I am continuing my post from last week on the structures you should have in place to have a successful cake business. In case you missed the first 6, you can read them here. Now lets get to it.

Financial Books

Keep track of your ingoings and outgoings.

Since you’re running your own business, you need to keep track of your income and your business expenses so that you can enter this information into the necessary financial books so you will know whether you are making a loss or profit.

Well there are 3 essential books you should have in your Cake Business where you will input information such as records of money coming in and out and they are:

  • The Profit and Loss Statement,
  • the Cash Flow Statement and
  • The Balance Sheet

These are the 3 primary financial statements used to assess a company’s performance and financial position.

Baking Business school, Business Structures for your cake business

Business Plan

Develop a business plan. Everyone always wants to skip this part and get straight to the baking, but it is really and truly important.

Think of a business plan as simply a list of questions on a form or a template. It makes you think of questions that you may have or have not considered like

How much does your product cost you to make, and how much do you want to sell it for?? Where will you sell? How will you market yourself? Is there demand for your cakes in your area? How much competition will you have? How do the competition’s products compare to yours in price and quality? How long will it take to turn a profit?

Your business plan will tell you whether or not your business is even profitable.

It’s worth it to make a plan, rather than bang your head against a wall for months wondering why your business isn’t working.

By having those questions and answers in front of you, it can help you map the way forward for your business and help you define your goals in real terms and it is something to refer to when your business starts to grow.

Baking Business school, Business Structures for your cake business

Social Sites

For your cake business you should develop an online presence.

You make a product that looks beautiful, so photographs are going to be key.

Set up a simple website with important details like what you do, where you’re based, and how people can place an order, and add plenty of mouth-watering photos. There are tons of website builders to choose from, including WordPress, or Wix.

Also set up a Twitter account, a Facebook page, and an Instagram account for your business, and keep them updated with posts and photographs. It’s also important to interact with other people on social media, so spend a few minutes each day liking and commenting on other people’s posts, and following relevant accounts.

To help in your marketing efforts, you should Set up a website and Facebook page for your business marketing. Quite a lot of marketing on Facebook can be achieved for free or at least very inexpensively.

The importance of a professional looking web site is that people will be able to find you more easily and your business will appear more professional. Also with sites like Facebook and Instagram you can display a gallery of your cakes and also give details of how potential customers can contact you.

Baking Business school, Business Structures for your cake business

Business Cards

You should always your business cards with you. when you are out and about marketing or just going on with your life.

Baking Business school, Business Structures for your cake business

Unique Selling Position

Think about standing out. There’s a large number of baking and cake making businesses out there, so you need to think about how you’re going to differentiate yourself.

What is your unique selling proposition or USP.

A USP is the reason why your baked  products are different from the rest. What makes your customers prefer you more than the other bakers.

Your USP is the reason why your customers decide to order from you and why they decide to remain with you.

Think about something in your business that makes it different from the rest. Your business is unique; it has its own personality. So think about what makes you distinct and special. Do you make awesome cupcakes or your cakes are fat free. You could specialise in vegan and/or gluten-free or fat free bakes, for instance, or concentrate on children’s party cupcakes or wedding cakes.

Take a few moments and think on this.

Baking Business school, Business Structures for your cake business

Develop a Marketing Strategy

You need to market your business.

People need to discover your wonderful cakes, so it’s important to think about marketing strategies. Of course you can use social media to reach potential customers, but you can think of other ways.

If you’re specialising in wedding cakes, you may be able to put flyers in a wedding dress shop, or develop a relationship with a local wedding venue.

Here are a few examples of some marketing strategies you can employ for your cake business:

  • Use Facebook advertising.
  • Word of mouth
  • Create fliers
  • Offer an opening special
  • Attend local events

That is it, the business structures you should have in place in your cake business.

Now go out there and Start selling! What are you going to do today to improve your cake business. Please comment below.

Why am I not making money in my cake business?

Have you ever asked yourself this question. Why am i not making money in this my cake business.

Okay you have finally taken the push and have started your cake business, maybe part or full time. You are passionate about baking.

You have done business card, printed fliers and have gone for training to improve your skills, but still you are hardly getting any orders.

And when you finally get an order, the customer prices your cakes so low that you are telling yourself what is the point.

If this is you, please continue reading.

The hustle is real but here are some mistakes you probably are making that is preventing you from making money

You are selling cakes that people do not want to buy

Maybe you want to do something different, like maybe do different flavours of cake. Maybe you offer unusual flavours like beetroot, peanut butter, avocado, wheat germ, etc. Yes if you were abroad, you could get customers but here, there are few adventurous types in Nigeria.

So it’s best you stick to the common flavours like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, lemon, chocolate and red velvet. Maybe when you become more popular you can expand your product range after you have done enough research and offer those unusual cake flavours.

How to make money in your cake business

Not realizing you are in business

You are still seeing yourself as a hobby baker, even though people are paying you money for your cakes. Once money is exchanged, this is a business transaction even if you are selling to your sister or a close friend.

As a business owner, things become different. You are now a professional baker and you should see and portray yourself as such.

How to make money in your cake business

Not keeping track of expenses

You have to keep track of what you are spending. You have to form this habit or keeping bookkeeping books and keeping receipts and not using your personal money to pay for cake stuff. A helpful guide is a webinar I did- Booking Systems for Cake Businesses. Click here and here to watch.

Waiting for customers to just miraculously appear

Customers are not going to magically appear. They just don’t fall from the sky. Yes it will be lovely if that happens. You have to go out there are find them. And that means you have to market your business to the hilt. If not you will just be staring at the sky.

I have a Marketing Course that can help. Here are the details.

How to make money in your cake business

You Discount and negotiate too much

Once a potential customer starts complaining about your price or question your pricing or do not immediately order, you start offering discounts.

I know especially when you first start and really want to make a sale you give discount, offer extras, and promise all sorts of things just to get that order.

The problem with this, is that I might set of a trend and sooner or later you will be known as the cheap baker and you will be working for next to nothing.

How to make money in your cake businessy

You are not confident

You are unsure of yourself or your skills. You still view yourself as a beginner or a learner. When you are describing your business or describing a cake you want to do for a customer, you do not talk in a confident tone.

You do not own the conversation. You don’t give ideas and just accept whatever the customer wants. When you do this, people can tell that you are a learner, even though you may be the best baker in town.

You are scared of charging high prices, you don’t sound confident about your skills, you can’t really articulate why someone should pick you to make their cakes over another brand, and you can’t say no to the customers who price you cheaply.

How to make money in your cake business

You are a Jack of all trades

You are one of those people that have multiple businesses. You not only sell cakes, but also clothes, shoes, toys. You also are a network marketer.

You need to concentrate on one thing or at least a similar line of business. People will just get confused not knowing what exactly you do. In your profile you advertise all sort of stuffs. If you are serious about your cake business and want to make a success of it, then you should let go of the others and concentrate on cake.

Whew!

I’m going to stop at these reasons ( so I do not overwhelm you), but believe me there’s still so much more.

There are a lot of reasons you might not be making money, and my question is always this:

“What are you going to do about it?”

“Are you going to allow this your business that you are so passionate about go to waste? Because if you keep going from month to month without making money…it’s only a matter of time”

Let’s solve this problem together.

Let me help you make money in your business.

Take a look at our Online Courses and choose one that is right for you.

If you are not sure what course to choose, just contact me at cakelady@bakingbusinessschool.com.ng and tell me your challenges and I will recommend the right course for you.

Do you really know how to Sell your Cakes?

How to make ₦1,000,000 in Cake Sales this year

You need 5000 people to buy a ₦200 cake
You need 2000 people to buy a ₦500 cake
You need 1000 people to buy a ₦1,000 cake
You need 500 people to buy a ₦2,000 cake
You need 300 people to buy a ₦3,333 cake
You need 100 people to buy a ₦10,000 cake
You need 50 people to buy a ₦20,000 cake
You need 40 people to buy a ₦25,000 cake
You need 20 people to buy a ₦50,000 cake
You need 10 people to buy a ₦100,000 cake

So what is your excuse?

Get to it NOW!

Do you really know how to Sell your Cakes? selling, baking business school

Some time back I remember I put the above post on the Facebook Baking Business Group page and it got a lot of reactions.

We all have ambition.

We all want something better in our lives?

We are all working for something better, like a better home, a new car, not having to worry about bills, a better school for our kids. I can go on and on.

Each year we promise ourselves that this year will be better.

But as each day rolls along, it’s like nothing has changed. Our businesses are not getting any better, the orders are not coming in and customers seems to be disappearing.

But before you blame your village people or the economy, here is one thing you should do first.

Believe it or not. You will see that time waits for no one and we soon will be preparing for Christmas again and you will be left wondering what did you do all year.

I want you to take control of your life. Don’t let life control you. You have to step up and take a long hard critical look at your business and see what you are doing wrong and what you can improve. Why are you not making money. Why are customers not ordering from you. Why are you attracting those clients that will price down your cakes.

I want you right now to take a piece of paper and write down how much you want to make by December 2019. If you are just making N100,000. Write down you want to make N1,000,000. If you are making N50,000. Write you want to make like N500,000.

You can write any amount you want. Don’t play safe. Let it be an amount that scares you. Once you write that amount i want you to put it in a prominent place where you can see it everyday all the time. On your dressing table, on your Bible, in your wallet, wherever.

Write ‘ By 31st December 2019 I will have N…….. in my bank account which I will have gotten from my cake business‘.

Do you really know how to Sell your Cakes? selling, baking business school

So now that you know how much you want to make i want you now to think how you can make this money from your cake business. How many cakes do you have to sell? Calculate it.

So lets say you want to make N1,000,000 by December. And your average cake price is N10,000. that means you will have to sell about approx 100 cakes from now to December.

We will even go further and calculate how much you need to sell each month. So to reach that target you need to sell about 11 cakes for that price each month. That is approx 2-3 cakes a week.

So you can see that to make N1,000,000 by the end of the year, you only need to sell 2 cakes a week.

Once you have broken it down like that, you can now come up with a strategy of how you can get just 2 customers a week.

You only need to get 2 people to order a cake from you this week. So think where and how you can get those 2 customers.

My calculations may not be the best. But you should get the general idea.

The reason I am giving you this scenario, is that i don’t want you to think that getting customers is this huge task. That you need to get 50 customers at once. Start small. Look around your immediate environment, your family and friends. Start there first and i am sure you will reach the target for this week.

How to sell cakes, Baking business school

See it as an adventure, instead of a pain or task. See it like a game. I just need 2 people this week to buy my product. They are out there. All you have to do is to find them.

You are the solution to someone’s problem right now. Stop hiding and start Doing.

Do this each week and you will be surprised at the results. Even though you don’t reach your quota all the time. You will see that your confidence will increase and your business and marketing skills would have improved.

Now go out there and look for your 2 customers right now.

And imagine what you are going to do with that N1,000.000

Would love to hear your comments. What are you going to do or change about your business to reach your 2 customers a week target.

Valentine’s Day Promotion Ideas For Your Cake Business

With Valentine’s Day just a few days away this is a great opportunity for your cake business to benefit from this.

Here are some promotion ideas your cake business can use for the days leading to Valentine’s Day.

Run a Competition

You can run a special Valentine’s Day competition where entrants can send in a picture of their boo or write a few lines about why they love someone.

The winner will get a free Valentines cake delivered to them or some special cupcakes.

Valentine’s Day Promotion Ideas

Create a Valentine Gift Guide

Many people sometimes are at loss as to what gifts to give on Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is not just for lovers but is an opportunity to show love.

Also people want to give something different on Valentine’s Day rather than the usual common gifts or they want to appreciate their parent, colleague of pastor. So why don’t you take that worry out of them and create a guide on what gifts to give to different categories of persons on Valentine’s day.

Depending on the type of products you sell, you can arrange your gift ideas like this:

  • Perfect Valentines gifts for the woman in your life
  • Valentines gifts for your Boyfriend
  • Great Husband gifts for Valentine’s day
  • Suitable Valentines gifts for your colleague
  • Appreciate your friend with this Valentine gift

Publish your gift guide on your website, or on your Facebook page or as a blog post and promote.

Valentine’s Day Promotion Ideas

Send your customers a Valentine’s Day card

I am not talking about a physical card. Look through your email list and send Valentine’s Day cards to customers.  This is a way to appreciate them as they have supported you in your business.

Just send an appropriate electronic card and you can even include an offer at the end giving them 10% off their next order. This again will encourage them to order from you in the future.

For your special customers who have spent a lot on your business you can do something extra  (if you have the means) like delivering a small box of mini cupcakes to their office or house with a Valentine’s card telling them how much you appreciate their support, especially for the single ones.

Valentine’s Day Promotion Ideas

Develop a special Valentines range of cakes

You can create a new small range of valentine cakes and cupcakes and promote it to your email list, website and social media.

Need some ideas, just go here: https://bakingbusinessschool.com.ng/is-your-business-ready-for-valentines/

Valentine’s Day Promotion Ideas

Partner with another business

Not every business is in competition with you. Think of business that goes well with Valentine’s Day.

You can partner with a florist and create a combined gift package where every cake ordered comes with a bouquet of roses. Or you can partner with a spa, nail or hair salon where a package will include a pampering session.

Valentine’s Day Promotion Ideas

Have I gotten your creative idea list whirring? These are just a few ideas you can use as a marketing strategy for your business this valentine season.

Think about what you want to achieve? Do you want more sales, or you want more people to know your brand, or you want to appreciate your customers more or you want to engage more with potential customers

These ideas will help you achieve some of this.

The whole of February is a great marketing opportunity. There are a lot of things you can do in February apart from Valentines to entice more customers to come to your business.

Need more ideas and tips, Just go to this link: https://bakingbusinessschool.com.ng/2019/02/01/february-marketing-ideas/

Now tell me. What are you going to use this valentine for your business? Will love to hear from you.  Just comment below.

HOW TO HAVE SUCCESS IN MARKETING YOUR CAKE BUSINESS

If you want to be successful at marketing there are several things you can do to increase your chances. The first is to sit down and think about everything that needs to be done in your cake business to make it a success.

After product discovery and / or creation which is deciding what cakes and/or products to sell

The next thing is that; MARKETING needs to be tops on that list.

Marketing sometimes can be left to the wind. But, if you really want to be successful, you have to place a high priority on it.

Here are things you need to do to increase your marketing efforts;

Plan Ahead

One of the most important things you can do to ensure marketing success is to plan in advance what you will be marketing and the different ways in which you will do so.

It’s not a “one and done” proposition. It takes a few weeks to get the message out and get people to answer your calls to action. They’ll need to see them in multiple ways.

To Do: create a marketing plan on how you can get more sales

Email Marketing

Arguably the most important way to earn money, practically on demand, is to build a healthy email list full of potential customers.

Make it your goal to fill your list so that you can market your cakes repeatedly to your audience in a more direct way. Plan and Create ongoing interesting useful  marketing campaigns for your readers. If you know in advance what you will write about on your newsletters, blogs, social media and in email marketing, you’ll be more successful.

Smart Promotion Tactics

You’ve likely read a lot about promotional tactics but some of what you read just doesn’t feel right.

The fact is you don’t have to resort to sneaky tactics to succeed at getting customers. Just think of those scam MMM or those Ponzi schemes emails and messages you get.

You can market your products with integrity and pride because your cakes are great.

No marketing deceitfulness required. When you are proud of your cakes or what ever products you produce you can promote them on social media, within blog posts, and in email and feel great about it. There is never a reason to feel guilty about making money from your cakes when they are of high quality.

how to market your cake business, How to have success in marketing your cake business, How to grow your cake business, How to get customers, How to market your cake business

Getting Exposure

Getting exposure may require that you step outside of your comfort zone and start using other mediums such as online radio interviews, guest blogging, authorship, speaking engagements and more.

You might also want to look into strategic joint ventures and / or pay per click advertising  or using Sponsored Ads on Google, Instagam  or Facebook.

If you are feeling overwhelmed right now and wondering how you are going to achieve or do all this.

I have got you covered.

This you find this post useful, please share it your friends and colleagues.

Look for ways to thank your loyal customers like sending them a surprise box of cupcakes at their workplace or inviting tem to a special vent where you will be.

You should always be in the mind of your customers. Don’t just throw away their information after the order is done with. Continually stay in touch with them. Alsothis goes for people who did not go ahead with an order still keep their information and send them your marketing material also.

Have a Written Plan

What do you want your business t look like in 2, 3,5, 10 years’ time? Write it down and make a plan of how you will achieve it. Without a plan, it is merely a dream. Outline your business plan, your goals, income goal,  a sales and marketing plan, and a determination of the cash you need to get things done. Writing it all down is a crucial first step.

Read

Don’t just read bakery books. Read books on Finance, business and entrepreneurship. Make it a goal to read at least one business book a month for a start and grow from there. Expanding your knowledge is vital for not only your growth but also your business growth. There are many books you can find online that are free that can expand your knowledge. So there is no excuse.

Cupcake, Muffin, Sweet, Cherry, Fruit

Be Creative

Always be looking for ways to improve your business and to make it stand out from the competition. Look for partners, training, courses, seminars that you can learn from.

Remember that you do not  know everything so  be open to new ideas and new approaches to your business.

Cake Pops, Dessert, Sweet, Pop

Increase Your Marketing Efforts

Effective marketing is key to getting customers and increasing your cake orders. Marketing takes a lot of forms. And you can include it anywhere in your business.  Everyone by now should know you are a cake artist or baker. Make use of branded t-shirts, badges, even stickers on your car. Be very active on social media and never ever stop talking about your business to everyone you meet.

I have been working on a new Marketing Course that is guaranteed to supercharge your business. It will be coming out towards the end of January so start saving up for it. You will not want to miss. I have given you enough warning.

 Provide Great Service always

Customer service is important. If you provide a very good service to your customers, they are more inclined to remember you when next they need a cake instead of going to your competition.

Study Your Competition

To be successful, you can’t be afraid to study and learn from your competitors. You never know  they may be doing something right that you can implement in your business to make more money or if they are doing not something that you can easily provide, that will be an advantage over them. So do some research and see what new things you can implement in your business.

Birthday, Happy Birthday, Cake

Understand how to price your cakes

I am not going to say much here as I have written so many articled on how you can price your cakes. You can download the free guide on how to price your cake here.

Pricing your cakes is vital. If you do not know how to price you will just be undercharging yourself. So learn how to price and do not be afraid to quote and defend your price to your customer.

To be successful in business, is not an overnight thing. You have to plan and work hard at it. If you want more success you will have to make the necessary changes  for success to happen.

The change may be as simple as getting a finance person to teach you accounting or taking a Marketing Course.

Take these tips I have written and apply them. Learn something new each day and just dont read and forget, read and implement.

Here is to you having a successful and profitable 2019.

About Me:

Hello, my name is Rotimicakelady and I am a cake business coach that teaches cake business owners how to grow and have a profitable cake business so that they have a constant stream of customers buying their delicious treats.

I have been running my own successful home based cake business for some years now. I have also been teaching bakers through my online courses who are struggling with low sales, with strategies on how to market, and price their cakes for profit.

In addition I am also run a Facebook Group where I coach, offer support and help bakers in their businesses.

I have helped over 50 bakers through my online course A comprehensive guide to starting your cake business in 30 days’ with much needed information on how to start a cake business in Nigeria. I also teach close to 4000 cake enthusiasts through my Facebook Group how to run a money making cake business.

I have been featured in ‘Naija Top Baker’ magazine, one of Nigeria’s foremost cake magazines and also been a Guest Speaker at the Bakery World Convention.

If you are struggling with getting customers for their cakes, I can help you solve this problem by showing you how to market, sell, price, plan, structure and brand your business so you are constantly selling to the right people who want your cakes.

What To Say To Get More Cake Orders

How do you talk your way to get more sales?

Why do some business owners always seems to have sales.

Their cakes may not look or taste as good as yours but when you go on their social media pages, they have a lot of followers, you see a lot of likes, engagements and people inquiring about their cakes and prices.

How do they do it?

Is it some magic formula or is it that they are just lucky?

Some may say they have the gift of the gab or they are great marketers or they are born charmers.

Have you heard the expression that he/she can sell ice to an eskimo?

Wouldn’t it be great to have that skill where you can talk your way to a sale or post something on Instagram and you will get a lot enquiries.

Well I’m going to tell you that there is a way to talk or communicate to get more cake orders.

Let me reveal to you this marketing secret.

Just as being a baker, cake artist, cake decorator or whatever you call yourself is a skill. How you communicate to your potential customers is also a skill. Luckily this skill is something you can learn easily.

Talking to customers whether in person, on the phone, email, text  or on social media is what helps you to get customers, keep customers and make them be coming back to order from you. Also these channels can make you lose customers.

So how can you talk your way to get sales?

Before I go through how, you have to first realise that you are a skilled professional and so must conduct yourself professionally at all times. You are no more a hobby baker or an amateur baker; you are professional cake artist, so you should see yourself as such.

So to communicate more effectively to get more sales, these are the things you should do:

Eat, Emotions, Cake, Birthday, bakingbusinessschool

Always start with a story

Who doesn’t like hearing a story? We all do.

You will notice that you will get more engagement on social media if there is a personal story in your postings.

So let’s say you posted a child’s birthday cake where the top tier is a princess theme and the bottom tier is a batman theme. Instead of saying this is a picture of a 2 tier princess and batman cake. You can say this is a cake I made for a mum of twins (a boy and girl). She had a tight budget and didn’t want to spend money on 2 cakes for her twins, so I helped her out by creating a one of a kind 2 tier cake so each twin will have their own type of special character.

The part was a success. Everyone was happy, the twins got the cake they wanted and she didn’t have to spend money on 2 cakes, so we saved her money.

Tell me isn’t what I said more interesting  than just saying princess and batman cake. You told a story, you mentioned how you helped the mum. You have created a picture in the mind of your potential customers. So it showed how you cared.

So when next you post something on your social media pages, think of a story to create around that post.

Love, Raisins, Food, Sweet, Heart, Snack, bakingbusinessschool

Talk as if you are talking to one person rather than general

Talk to one person even though you are talking to many. People can tell if you send a broadcast message. So it is not really speaking to them. Make your potential customers feel special.

Use their names, if possible. Also use words like ’you’, ‘you will love this’, ‘get yours now’, ‘your office colleagues will love these cupcakes’, ‘make your husband happy by sending him this luscious tempting chocolate cake’.

In addition, positive words go a long way, examples are using words like awesome, super, brilliant, splendid, amazing, breath taking, remarking, wonderful, astounding.

I can go on and on. Just use thesaurus.com to find various words to use.

In one of my courses i have a done for you template on how you can describe your cakes to entice customers. If you are interested in this Course, just head to this link to get more details;

https://www.subscribepage.com/thewealthybakersystem2018

Always direct your communication to a sale

You are in business to make money right unless you are running a charity. But I’m sure for the thousands that are reading this you want to make money.

You can describe your cakes now from now to kingdom come, but if you do not tell your people to buy. They will not buy. Please do not assume that when you post a picture of a mouth-watering cake and your description is so tempting that it will make one’s mouth water that they will automatically say I want to buy this cake.

Cake, Birthday, Confetti, Sugar, bakingbusinessschool

You have to tell what your customers to do. Something that may seem so obvious to you may not be obvious to others. So do not be leaving money on the table by not stating specifically how they can order from you.

At the end of your post, put selling words like ‘order here’, then post a website or phone number or ‘buy this cake by going to this link’ or ‘contact this Whatsapp number’.

Tell them exactly what they should do to order a cake from you. You do not want to leave room for assumptions.

Dessert, Pastries, Food, Cake, Bake, bakingbusinessschool

Let them know you

People buy from people they know, like and trust. So you have to be more open. I am not saying you should reveal everything about yourself. Of course some things should be kept private.

But try and let people into your world. Let them know that there is a face behind the brand. People want to know about you. You are the one that makes your business come alive.

From time to time release videos about yourself. Talk to your audience. Let them see you decorating a cake. If you are on snap chat, post short videos of you going about your day.

Please do not feel that you are not pretty enough, or that you’re not the right body shape or you don’t wear makeup. You are special. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. If you see some of my videos, Its hardly glamorous but I know I have something to say, I am adding value to people’s lives.

I’m sure if you are gaining something from somebody, you are hardly noticing that their hair is out of place or that they are skinny or fat. You are just happy that you are learning something or being entertained.

So don’t worry about all those superficial nonsense. You are adding value.

You are what makes your business interesting so start showing yourself of.

Lets others speak for you

Feedback, Confirming, Board, Blackboard, bakingbusinessschool

You do not always have to be the one who does all the talking. Let your customers help you out.

That is why I love testimonials and reviews. If you notice I post them from time to time on my Facebook group and Page.

When you get a positive feedback from a customer, post it on your pages. Also encourage your followers, fans to leave reviews and recommendations on your Facebook page or even just tell others about your business.

When people come to your social media pages and see other people praising your work or your service, they are more inclined to follow you and then eventually make an order so they can have a taste of what others have been raving about.

Torte, Anniversary, Birthday, Cake, bakingbusinessschool

So as you can see,  you can have a lot more orders and have a lot more followers  just by changing the way you communicate.

Believe me if you keep doing all what I suggested above, you will have a lot more followers and engagements for your posts which will lead to more orders.

The more you talk, the more people will know about you.

Customers will not fall from the sky; you can to tell them about your business.

If you are silent, you will not make any money

So make noise.

The Best New Year’s Gift you will ever have

My New Year’s Gift to you!

Goal Planner pic.jpg

CLICK HERE TO ACCESS YOUR 2019 GOAL PLANNER

This may be the best New Year gift you will get.

You know why?

Because this gift will make you achieve all your dreams for 2019.

How would you like in December 2019 to have achieved all your goals and dreams.

That will be awesome right?

But how can you do that.

It is not by magic.

All you have to do is plan.

You know why many people fail in their goals.

It is because they fail to have a plan.

How many of you have seen or heard these quotes? I am sure I have mentioned it a few times on my blog.

If you want to succeed with your goals, you need to first write them down and plan on how you are going to achieve it.

In essence you need to make them specific, measurable, and completed with a deadline.

Let me give you an example, one of my goals last year was to take my children to Disney world in Florida. We all know travelling can be very expensive not to talk about going to Disney world.

But that was one of my goals.

So from January 2018 I started looking online for tickets, hotel booking and so on. I didn’t have the money at that time, but I still booked my hotel.

I then made a note of how much everything will cost so I started working at it. I made a plan of how many products and customers I will need to sell to achieve that amount.

So let’s say I needed N1,000,000 in 5 months so that’s means I will need to earn as profit N200,000 each month. Once I broke it down like this- N200,000 a month didn’t seem so bad. To earn that N200,000 each month I have to sell products worth that amount.

Well I worked at it and I was able to treat my kids to Disney world and it was a memorable experience, one that my precious ones will remember for a long time. You can read about my experience at Disney world here.

When I set that goal, honesty I was scared, because I know how much it will be for all 3 of us to go.

But I really believe that when you write things down and put it to God and tell Him that this is what you want to do, the Universe will align itself to make things happen.

Money will not drop from the sky (although I really wish it does) but events and opportunities will just come to you that will make that goal happen.

That’s why it’s important to have and make use of a Goal Planner.

With a Goal Planner you can set your goals and plan how you can achieve them

Here are a few tips for your own goal setting so that you are all set for the New Year:-

New Year'S Day, Years Beginning, Laptop

  1. What do you want out of life?

It is very important to define your goals and your dreams. What do you really want out of life?

Financial security?

To build your own house?

A cake shop?

To be booked out every day?

Go on vacations when you like?

To buy land?

To live abroad?

To be able to invest?

For your children to go to a better school?

To expand your product line?

To hire staff?

What are your dreams and goals? What do you want?

Have you ever really sat down and thought through your life dreams and decided what you really want in this life?

What are your dreams?

Write down all of your dreams as you think of them. Don’t think of any as silly, stupid or foolish—remember—you’re dreaming! Just write all the thoughts that come to your head.

Want to live in a 10 bedroom mansion by the sea? Write it down.

Want to be the No.1 cake maker in the world? Write it down.

Now, here is the vital bit.

Now prioritize those dreams. Which are most important? Which are most achievable? the most realistic.

You may have said I want to earn N100 million. Yes that will be great, but is it realistic?

Arrange them in the order you will like to achieve them.

Plan, Objective, Strategy, Goal, Process

  1. Make Your Goals S.M.A.R.T

The simple fact is that for goals to be powerful, they should be to be SMART.

SMART just means that your goals should be:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Time-bound
  • Specific

Your goal must be specific, clear and well defined. You need direction, so when writing your goals down, be as specific as possible. Don’t just say I want more customers.

A SMART goal is that by the end of each new month I will have gained 10 or more new customers.

You need to specify where you want to go by defining precisely where you want to end up.

  • Measurable

At the end of each week, month, quarter you will need to measure your progress. So when setting your goals include precise dates, amounts, deadlines so you can measure your degree of success.

If your goal is simply defined as “To make more money in my business” how will you know when you have been successful?

A SMART goal will be to make at least N150,000 per month.

If at the end you do not make that sum, you can now think of ways of how you can increase your business so you can make that amount.

Whether it is by increasing your pricing or upping your marketing or maybe reducing your expenses.

Without a way to measure your success you will just be going through the motions and can miss out on actually knowing whether you have actually achieved something or not.

  • Attainable

Make sure that it’s possible to achieve the goals you set. If you set a goal that you have no hope of achieving, you will just be frustrated and give up. You should not just say you want 100 new customers in the first month.

A SMART goal will be I will focus on getting 2-5 new customers and once you have achieved that you can start increasing that number each month.

New Year, 2019, Happy New Year, Start

  • Realistic

Please make your goals realistic. A goal should be something that that you can make real or can become a reality in our lives.

Many of us set goals that are not realistic. Yes, you should stretch yourself, but it has to be realistic.

So let say I want to make N10,000,000 by December 2019 and you are a home baker. Sorry to say this is not a realistic goal.

A SMART goal will be by the end of December 2019, I will have made N1,000,000 or more in profit. If you further break it down, that means you need to make about  N85,000 each month.

Please do not get me wrong, we should all set big goals, goals that will make us think outside the box, but it must be Realistic.

Deadline, Stopwatch, Clock, Time

  • Time-Bound

Your goals must have a deadline. You cannot be working in perpetuity. You should have an end date for all your goals.

In the examples above, you will have noticed that I have been inserting end dates such as month end, year end. You should do that to.

Each of your goals should have a time line attached to it.

As humans if there is no timeline, we will just get lazy or just forget about it. But if you know that you have to get those 5 customers by month end, believe me you will get your bum out of bed in the morning and look for those customers to come and buy your products.

Resolutions, 2019, New Year'S Day, List

  1. Have an Accountability partner

Lastly to be more effective in achieving your goals. You need an accountability partner.

Once you have written your goals, share them with someone you trust. If you set a goal and only you know about it, you may not be very serious about it.

But if you have someone screaming in your ear reminding or asking you if you have made that sale, gone for that meeting, you will be more inclined to achieve that goal.

I know it might be daunting sharing your goals with someone. It can put you in a vulnerable state because they are knowing your inner most thoughts and desires, but please try to do this, because it works.

It can be your parent, your partner, sibling or friend, but share it with at least someone and probably someone you are afraid of a little. If you know you have to answer someone at the end of the day, you will push yourself more to achieve that goal.

Bulletin Board, Stickies, Post-It, List

As we start this New Year, don’t expect to achieve all your goals. If you do, great but most will not achieve all the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. But do not let this keep you down.

The fact that you are working on your goals, makes you step closer to achieving them. You can achieve them this year, or next year.

Yes you may not get that monthly goal of 10 customers, but even if you get 3 or even 1, that’s something and you should really applaud yourself for that.

Just do something every day to make your dreams and goals come true.

New Year, Celebration, 2015, Season, Party, New, Year

Whatever you do, take action and put this Goal Planner somewhere visible to you. You need to see it to remind yourself about your goals and what you need to do each day.

Make it part of your day to review your Goal Planner so you can monitor your progress.

I hope this Goal Planner will be useful to you.  Will love to hear from you, so comment below.

If you want me to be your accountability partner, just comment below with your email address.

Also please feel free to share this blog and Goal Planner with others so they will have the help to achieve their goals.

Here is wishing you a year fully loaded with happiness May this New Year bring new goals, new achievements and a lot of new inspirations in your life.

Have a wonderful and prosperous 2019.

5 Christmas Promotional Ideas to Get Customers to buy from you

Christmas is one of the most popular Holidays of the year and it can be a profitable holiday for most cake business owners. I mean Christmas is all about giving and one of the most popular gifts to give people is a cake. It could be a fruit cake or iced cookies or cupcakes.

However, we all know that the cake industry has fierce competition, so for you to succeed it requires creative marketing and sales promotions to get customers to order from you.

So that is why I want you from now to focus on effective promotional strategies to increase the number of your Christmas orders.

If you cannot think of any, here are some Christmas promotional ideas to entice customers to buy from you.

Box, Gift, Present, Xmas, Celebrate

  1. Have a 12 days of Christmas Deal

Use this classic Christmas concept to develop a marketing campaign for your business in the course of 12 days in December. What do I mean?

Offer your customers, email subscribers, social media followers a different special deal for the 12 days leading up to Christmas.

This series will have your potential customers coming back each day to see what you have on offer.

If your customer knows you have a new surprise for them every day , they are much more likely to read your emails or texts.

You can create any kind of deal. For example:

Day 1- Get 6 cupcakes for just N500

Day 2- Order a cake from us today and you don’t have to pay for delivery

Day 3- Get 20% off for this delicious Fruit cake

And so on

So for 12 days only, you are offering special deals daily.

This will create excitement and urgency amongst all of your customers or visitors to your website or social media page.

With each daily post, support your deal with an interesting story and a very colourful nice picture.

You can go to pixabay.com to get nice pictures.

  1. Create Christmas Gift bundles

This is a season of hampers. So why can’t you take advantage of that. Offer your customers, followers a cake hamper. This is not very common so why don’t you start a trend.

Instead of the usual hampers which we see around, create a hamper of your sweet treats. You can include mini cakes, muffins, pastries, gingerbread men, cookies and cupcakes in a nicely decorated hamper.

Just go to Google or Pinterest to get ideas.

Post a nice picture. Do a write up of about 3-4 selection of different products inside and promote, promote, promote.

Gift, Christmas, Surprise, Packed

  1. Have a fun prize giveaway

In this day and age you need to be on social media. That is the fastest way to get new customers. Christmas is a fun time. Parties are happening every day, people are thinking of gifts, people are more willing to spend money during this period. However, people don’t like it if all you shout about is buy buy buy.

You can build more connection and interaction with your customers by giving back. Christmas is all about giving, so do something nice for your customers this period.

One fun thing you can do is to prize giveaway

On your social media accounts post a new photo every day until say Christmas eve offering customers or your followers the chance to win a new prize daily.

You can say they should post a picture of what Christmas means to them.   So your followers will have to post a picture of their own and tag it using a hashtag (you can create your own company hashtag, e.g. #bosecakesand bakes) for the chance to win the prize of the day.

The genius of this is that the more people posting pictures on your pages using your company’s hashtags, the more likely your posts will be trending and more people will see them.

This translates to more engagement and followers on your pages.

Christmas Dinner, Christmas Table

  1. Have a Christmas party

To get more people to know and follow you on social media is by posting videos.

But why don’t you go a step further and have a party live on Facebook or Instagram.

Send an invite to all your friends, members, followers on all your social media handles telling them they are specially invited to a Christmas party of your Company. They do not have to leave their house. All they need to have is their phone.

Of course this will generate interest and curiosity. What sort of party can you have without you having to be there?

Once you have sent an invite and have chosen the date for your ‘party’.

Start to think of things you can do to talk about when you go live. You can talk about how to throw a xmas party or how to set a xmas table or how to bake a xmas cake. Make your surroundings as fun as you can be. You can hang some balloons, blow some party poppers, have some champagne glasses.

It is a party after all.

Christmas Table, Christmas Dinner

  1. Present them with an offer that they cannot refuse

If something is scarce, you tend to want it more right? It’s how our brain works. So why don’t you use scarcity as a marketing strategy this Christmas season.

You can say you are releasing this limited edition Gift vouchers which entitles someone to having a free cake on their birthday. And it is only eligible to those customers that make or book an order from now.

This is a great strategy as it will entice people to order from you knowing that they will get a free cake delivered to them for free on their birthday.

But be warned do not run this sort of offer for a long time. You do not want to be stuck with someone that just buys N2,000 worth of stuff and then you are obligated to give that person a cake. You can run this offer depending on you between 2- 5 days.

So those are five things you can start doing this Christmas season.

The thing about these ideas is to continually keep your customers engaged everyday this season. Let them look forward to reading your posts. Make them as funny or interesting as possible. Once a customer knows,  likes and trusts you, you have a customer for life.

A Sure Way On How To Get More Sales And Orders For Your Cake Business

I am always getting messages from bakers asking me how they can get more orders. They have done the social media thing, given out their business cards, told family and friends.

But they want more, they want something bigger. They want to be fully booked out for months. So that each month they have like up to 7 or more orders.

So how do they achieve this?

Sell Your Cakes At Outside Events.

What do I mean by this?

Outside Events include such things as selling your baked goods at, food fairs, food festivals, church fairs, markets, interhouse sports competitions in schools,, charity events, expos, trade fairs, musical shows, pta meetings, club events and so on. Anyplace that has a congregation of people in one place.

You can make a list right now of places you can sell your cakes. Start with your church or mosque and then move on to schools and then sponsored events.

Every or so month there is usually a fair or festival going on. Such as the GT bank food festival. Also churches nowadays hold charity events where you can purchase a booth for a low price and you can sell anything you want.

These events are great way to make your brand known and to sell directly to the people that matter.

Not convinced enough?

Here are some reasons why you should do outside events:

  1. You will make some much needed cash

Fine, you will not make millions, but if you are short of cash, you can make a few thousand of Naira just by selling some cupcakes and cakes. And after deducting the cost of the stall/booth and ingredients, you should have some tidy profit.

Bun Muffins Batch Buns Muffins Muffins Muf

  1. You will get new customers

You will get a steady stream of new customers who have never heard from you. So when they come upon your stall, you will have a chance to market to them. So you are reaching out to your target customers. You do not even have to wait for people to come upon your stall, go around the event with samples of your cakes and when they take a taste, give them your business cards.

  1. You can even take Bookings there and then

As people come to you to sample or buy your cakes, have your cake photo album/portfolio with you and tell them that that if they make an order now you will give them a discount.

This will encourage them to at least book a cake with you now instead of waiting to later when they might have forgotten you.

Cupcake, Ceramic, Colorful, Funny, Loop

  1. Great way to get people’s contacts

You can have a little notebook for people to write down their details. As they come to taste a sample or to buy, ask them politely if they can leave their name, phone number and email address. This way you will have their contacts and can contact them directly through your email or sms campaigns.

  1. It is an opportunity to promote your business

You are meeting your direct customer’s face to face so talk to them about your business. After they buy, give them your business cards and tell them that they can order online on your Facebook or Instagram or your website and that all the information is on your business card.

  1. Free Advertising

Most times, such events will be covered on social media or even newspapers, radio or even the church magazine or bulletins.

So this is free media and social media coverage for you. Also there is usually a photo wall at such events and your logo will be featured. Take pictures on that wall, encourage your friends and customers to take pictures eating your cake by your stall and post on social media.

Iced Tea, Summer, Cupcakes, Refreshments

  1. You can run a raffle

If you want more participation and engagement. You can run a raffle where the winner will win a big cake. You can sell raffle tickets at the events for a minimal fee and make a grand display when announcing the winner.

This will generate interest and a crowd. Let someone be handing out your business cards or flyers to the people around.

Cake, Cupcake, Flower

  1. You will get out of the house at last

If for nothing else it will give you a chance to get out of the house. We bakers are an introverted lot and we like nothing more than being in our cocoon. But we need to go out and be under the sunshine and meet people. So even if you do not achieve much, you will get much of the needed vitamin D and at least make some sales.

5 Ways To Taking Beautiful Pictures of Your Cakes So You Get More Sales

As a cake business owner, we do many things and handle a lot of tasks. If we are not baking or decorating, we are taking orders, delivering our cakes, marketing, designing, cleaning the kitchen, following up with customers, shopping for ingredients, keeping accounts and so on. Life as a cake artist is a full time job.

So I am sure the last thing you want to do is to start to take a picture. Most times we just want to finish the order and get on to the next one or just rest. So we may not even remember to take a good picture or we hurriedly take a picture on the messy table or in the cake box.

But you need to realise that your cakes are the heart of your business and so you need a beautiful cake pictures. So do not rush this important step. You need to take your time to take high quality pictures of your cakes so you can display them on your website or social media.

And you don’t need to have an expensive camera or employ a photographer to take your cake pictures.

All it takes is you knowing a few important keys to photographing your cakes.

Lighting Is Very Important

Natural light is always the best. Always take you r Photos under natural light near a window. Soft light from a window or an overhead light will give a beautiful effect on a cake.  If the weather is bad or you cannot use natural light (maybe because its late at night), you can use the filters on your smartphone to create a light effect for your cakes.

Later you can invest in a photo box which provides all the light you need to make your cakes look beautiful.

Pie Sweet Cake Dessert Pastry Cream Birthd

Take Your Photo From All Angles

Make sure you photograph your cake from different angles. You can take overhead and side shots too. For overhead shots, stand on a chair and take the picture from above. For side shots, bend down to get the side shot angle. For cupcakes, you can take a shot from the side view.  This will make the cakes look as if they are fading into the distance.

Remove All Distractions

When taking a picture, remove all clutter from the table. Your cake may look nice, but if there is a pile of dirty plates in the background that will just spoil your picture. Place your cake on a cake stand on a clean table. You can even invest on some wall paper and use this as a background.

Cake, Banh Gato, Ball, Milk, Lam Banh

Play Around With Background Colour and Fabrics

Most cakes look nice against a clean white wall but if that is not possible. Play around with different colours and fabrics and see how different your cakes will look.

Create A Brand For Your Pictures

When taking pictures of your cakes, think about your brand. Let your Photos be consistent and match your brand. This will create a professional look. It can be as simple as placing your logo at a certain angle on your picture. If you are using a background, you can make sure it’s in the same colours as your brand.

So I hope I have given you great tips on how you can crate stunning pictures. To think about it, cakes are just like people. Before you take a picture, you make sure your makeup is on point, your clothes look nice and so on. Our cakes are an extension of us, so take time to make sure your cakes look as good as you.

How To Use Instagram To Get Cake Orders

It’s been a few weeks that I’ve written on my blog. I have been busy teaching  my summer baking classes at the Young Bakers Academy. It was a thrilling few weeks teaching young aspiring bakers and I thank God it was a success.

And it was a success because I used social media especially Instagram to promote my classes.

Our Mini Courses deal with different aspects of the cake business to help and guide you in making your cake business more successful and of course profitable.

  1. Use Instagram Stories

Adding videos really work. And it doesn’t have to be a long video and if you are shy, you may not even have to appear. Let someone take a video of you piping a cake.

It has been proven countless times that people engage more with businesses who post videos.

Here is how post an instagram story:

  1. Go to your profile page on instagram and press the round button where your picture is;
  2. To add a picture, just press the middle round button;
  3. To add a video, just continually press that same round button;
  4. Then press the ‘your story’ button;
  5. And that is it, you now have an instagram story.

You can promote a post for a few days for just $3 which is about N1,000.

dessert-282342__340

You can even add emoji’s and hashtags to your bio just to make it a little more fun.

 muffins-50935__340

Should You Take A Free Job Now On The Promise Of Future Orders?

Sometimes we may feel that for us to get more customers, we should  cater for an event at our own cost  or enter into an agreement with vendors who need our products and do it for free on the promise of future work, which may or may not happen.

You may feel that on this particular occasion you will do it for free, with the hope that that particular vendor will love your products so much and will be ordering from you for all their future occasions.

So what do you do in these types of transactions? When a company or a vendor asks you to provide your cakes for free and that they will start paying you next time.

Here are a couple of ways to handle these kinds of situations:

  1. Offer Them Something Of Extra Value

Instead of you using your money and doing all the cakes and they not paying anything. Why don’t you tell them that they will pay the full price for the cakes but you will add something extra like maybe free delivery or an extra batch of cupcakes.

Think of something that will be of value to them and offer it to them. So this way, if they decide not to order from you again in the future, it will not be a complete loss as they would have paid you money to cover your costs.

frosting-182849__340 (1)

  1. Offer Them Wholesale Pricing

Create a pricing list just for them.  In this sort of pricing, the price goes down as their order numbers go up. For example:

1-50 cupcakes: N700.00 each

51-100 cupcakes: N500 each

101-200 cupcakes: N400 each (and so on.)

This will encourage them to stay, but also encourage them to place the bigger orders with you.

hh24

  1. Be Firm

If a vendor says just do this job for free and I will promise you the next one you will get paid. If you are not happy with that arrangement, you can say ‘ I don’t work that way but I’m happy to negotiate on a deal that will be beneficial for both of us.

“How about this, I’ll do such a good job on this first one at a very good price, that you’ll come back for the second one, and we can talk discount on the next job.”

This way you are letting them know that you value repeat customers, but you’ll provide them that value when they fulfil their promise.

Too often, very well meaning potential customers offer us the sun, moon and stars– that is they’re offering us plenty work in the future. Too often, this future work never pans out.

This was for an order I had for 100 cupcakes

If working with other vendors is something you want to start venturing in, then by all means go for it. It can be a very profitable market –  just remember that they are not working for free or cheap so neither should you. It should be a mutually beneficial relationship.

MOST important of all, make sure you’ve got the same target market as they do. If they do not have the same customer base as you …don’t align with them.

Align with companies and vendors that share your values, share your demographic, and share the understanding that this needs to be a win/win relationship, not an opportunity for them to exploit you. You are not the cheap cake lady.

The Real Reason You Are Not Making Money In Your Cake Business

Okay you have finally taken the push and have started your cake business, maybe part or full time. You have done most of the necessary things. you have the passion You have done business card, printed fliers and have gone for training to improve your skills, but still you are hardly getting any orders.

And when you finally get an order, the customer prices your cakes so low that you are telling yourself what is the point.

If this is you, please continue reading.

The hustle is real but here are some mistakes you probably are making that is preventing you from making money.

(Just send an email to cakelady@bakingbusinessschool.com.ng to get the password).

5. You Discount and Negotiate Too Much

Once a potential customer starts complaining about your price or question your pricing or do not immediately order, you start offering discounts.

I know especially when you first start and really want to make a sale you give discount, offer extras, and promise all sorts of things just to get that order.

The problem with this, is that I might set of a trend and sooner or later you will be known as the cheap baker and you will be working for next to nothing.

cupcakes 42

Need help? In the Ultimate Guide to marketing Your cake Business, it teaches you how to be more confident in your marketing. Click here for more details.

Let me help you make your money

If you are struggling with getting customers for their cakes, I can help you solve this problem by showing you how to market, sell, price, plan, structure and brand your business so you are constantly selling to the right people who want your cakes.

How To Handle Complaints From Your Cake Customers

Here are 5 useful tips to deal with complaints from your customers.

Whenever you receive a complaint, especially when it happened to me, i just wanted to hide and pretend that nothing happened.

Sometimes you might argue or try and defend your position, or just try and forget about it or offer a refund and that’s it.

Here are a few ideas on to deal with such customers:
• Thank them for their feedback, and be sincere about it.
• Acknowledge their feelings, and be sincere about it.
• If it’s over the phone, do not interrupt them. Let them talk it out, before you reply, and use that time to gather yourself. If it’s online don’t reply immediately but do so timely.
You need to figure out what you should do before you can proceed. Be honest with yourself, maybe you were you in a rush while you were making the cake or were you tired. It’s ok. Mistakes do happen.

A Great reply is to say:
“Thank you for your feedback. Please give me some time to respond in detail and will get back to you soon”.

Scenario 2: Are They Right In Complaining?

This might be hard for some, but think hard about their complaint. Is it justified? Ask yourself some questions: Were you happy with the cake? Did you deliver the cake that was ordered?

Was the cake not your best work? Did you really forget to do or add something on the cake? Did you get the flavor, colour or size wrong? Does this client have the right to grumble and whine, or are they just want to talk?

be honest with yourself.  If you’ve made a mistake, just admit it and aplogise. Just saying sorry most times is ok.

It shows that you are a professional and you took their complaint seriously, that is good customer service. In the end, tell them how you are going to make changes in future so that this problem doesn’t occur again.

So deep down you know that you made a grave mistake and was at fault, how are you going to make the situation better for you and your dear complaining customer.

If you are at fault, you still want to make them come back to you and order from you again. A good way to handle it, is to Imagine yourself in their shoes. How would you want your complaint to be dealt with? Would you want a refund?

You might want to offer them a full refund, part refund, or free box of cupcakes as a form of apology (or a free cupcakes and a full refund if was a big mistake).

What you offer depends on the severity of the complaint

For example, if you got the flavour wrong but they still got a great tasting cake or you forgot to write Happy Birthday on it or you spelt a name wrong?  For that you can offer them a discount on their next order.

Frankly not writing Happy Birthday on a birthday cake will have no real impact on their event, but they deserve a sincere apology at the least because you didn’t meet their expectations.

But for extreme cases like if the entire cake falls because you didn’t put enough dowels on the cake and so the event had no cake at their wedding or birthday party? Now that is bad. In that case, you have to refund the entire amount, and also maybe send some cupcakes and perhaps offer a discount on a future order (that is if they will come back).

You’ve got to make your customer happy, but don’t reward them too much as that’s an admission of guilt and could set up the tone of future orders.

Sometimes you are going to meet a very unreasonable customer. We all know them.

In this case just keep quiet. The less you say, the better. Don’t be tempted to apologise too much, defend yourself or make them feel bad.

You do not want to waste  your time with such people. Just hear them out, say sorry, tell them you’re grateful for their feedback and hang up. It is not worth it to prolong the conversation.

Scenario 5: In The End Learn From Your Experience

Whatever experience you encounter, see what lessons you can learn to make your cake business better.

Maybe you need to start informing customers of your Terms and Conditions? Ask customers to confirm their order before you go ahead or tell them to pay a deposit .

Negative feedback is horrible i know, but take a deep breath and just deal with it and learn from them.

What are your experiences with dissatisfied customers. Would love to hear your comments.

5 Things To Stop Doing Now To Prevent Your Customers Going To Your Competitors

Whether you’re a big time cake seller or a small home based baker, you know how painful it is to have a customer leave you and go another baker or your competition.

It hurts. It makes you feel you are not good enough. You start questioning your abilities and wonder what the other baker has or is doing better than you.

Competition is not nice, especially when you’re the one losing. But that’s business life. When you are running a business, you’ve got to face the fact that you are going to face competition, somewhere down the line of your business journey.

So how do you deal with the competition?

There are plenty things you can do but the best approach, however, is to do all you can to keep your existing customers. Your customers are essential to your business because no customers= no business.

Luckily, there ways to prevent your customers from going to your competition or leaving you.

These tips you are going to learn will help to keep your customers loyal to our business so that you will have a customer for life.

cupcake 21

  1. Know your customer

Have a thorough knowledge of your customer. You should know your customer — even if it is just their email address and birthday.

You may ask why does it matter?

Having a thorough knowledge of your customers such as their demographic, occupation, age, gender, motivation, hobbies, will help you know how to attract a customer and serve them better.

If a customer decides to order a cake from somewhere else. You should try and find out why they left. You can send them a feedback form and structure your questions to find out what are their motivating factors for ordering a cake

Understanding your customer better will help you hold on to them.

how to use social media price

In this Mini Course, we are going to learn the following Lessons:

  • What is social media marketing;
  • Why you need to be on social media;
  • The different social media platforms;
  • What to post on social media;
  • what social media platforms to be on;
  • and much more

  1. Know your competition

Know who are you dealing with. Do you know where your leaving customers are going?

The first thing you should do is to discover which of your competitors the customer prefers, and they prefers them. You can simple ask them or try doing some undercover work on the competition.

Find out what types of cakes they are selling, do they have a website, how much are their cakes, how are their designs, what additional services do they offer their customers.

A simple fact could be that the competition makes it simpler for people to order or their prices are cheaper. With this information you can now look at your business and see where you can make changes.

So do a little spying of your competition. You may be surprised at what you will find out.

cupcake 20

  1. Get your USP Right

Take a few moments and think on this.

cupcake 22

  1. Try Incentives to make your customers spend more.

One way to keep your customers is by upselling.

Here’s how it works.

A customer calls you to make an order. Great, but they only ordered 6 cupcakes, which is like 3k. Not much of a sale right?

Your next goal? Get them to spend more money.

You could tell them that if they spend a little bit more money they can get a dozen or more cupcakes and you will throw in free delivery.

Why? When a customer spends more money, they value the product more if they spend additional money on it. So it will make them harder to leave

The more your customer pays and the longer they stay, the more likely they are to spend more.

By encouraging upsells, you’ll prevent your customers from leaving.

  1. pricing mad easy priceGet this Mini Course for just N3,500. In this lesson, you will get the following lessons:
    1. 7 step guide to pricing your cakes
    2. How to respond to customers who complain about your prices
    3. When and how to raise your cake prices
    4. How To Price So You Do Not Lose Customers

  1. Reward your customers for doing something for you.

Reward your customers in some way. Give them a freebie, a gift, a discount, voucher Make it valuable and desirable.

But before you give them something for free, make sure they do something for you. Something like what? Make them promote your business. Tell them that if they refer your cakes to someone and that person makes an order, they will get a free cake or cupcakes for their next birthday.

If a customers gets something from you for free, they are most likely to be singing our praises to other people and think of you when they want a cake.

This practice works, because it’s built on reciprocity. Reciprocity is simply just a mutual exchange. It means giving something to someone thereby motivating them to return the favour.

In Summary

In summary, knowing your customers and your competition is the way to get started, them with that information, you can hone down on your USP, try to make your customers spend more and then give then freebies for dong something for you.

In the end you could have a customer for life.

Let me help you make your money in your business.

5 Ways To Get Repeat Business From Your Current Customers

Your Customer’s satisfaction should be at the top of your list of priorities when running your cake business. Of course, satisfying our customers begins with the incredible cakes that you offer them.

It is very important that you treat your best customers good which is a great way to increase your customer base. This is because people talk and word spreads fast. When customers are happy, they will tell their friends and family about your business.

The same thing applies for when a business makes customers unhappy. The bad reviews even spread faster.

So how can you ensure you never run out of customers? Well it is by making sure you always make your customers happy?

Here are 5 ways:

  1. Communicate With Your Customers

Whenever something new happens with your business, tell them. If you have a new product line, tell them.  It is a good idea to send your regular customers Newsletter emails. Your email list is a critical tool for maintaining and building relationships with your current customers and keeping in touch with them.

soap-447658__340

  1. Use The Power Of Freebies

Who doesn’t enjoy getting something for free? It’s important to show your customers that you are grateful for their support, especially when it comes to your loyal customers. Offering some freebies and discounts can go a long way in ensuring our customers keep coming back. One of the best ways you can do that is to offer some type of reward for their loyalty.

You can also do a promotion where you tell your customers to leave positive stories about your business and in return they will get some kind of discount and a freebie. If your customers are openly engaging with your business or brand on a regular basis, you get free publicity.

Customers truly appreciate it when you show that you appreciate them! Christmas is always a good time to show appreciation to your customers.

Happy Customers = Happy Business.

food-2585594__340

  1. Be Accessible

The speed at which you respond to your customers will determine if your customers will determine whether they were satisfied with your business or not.

Be sure to deliver what you set out to deliver. People hate waiting. If you tell your customers you will respond to give them a quote in 15 mins, make sure you keep to time. Make a policy to respond to any customers question or comment whether it is by phone, emails, or any of your social media accounts within 30mins or less.

Helping your customers solve any problem they have in a well-timed manner will go a long way in helping your business.

Also make sure you meet deadlines and keep your promises.

No one likes waiting around for cakes they have ordered. This is where communication plays a big role. If you can’t deliver on time, let your customer know in good time.

food-1051159__340

  1. Offer Various Payment Options

Don’t force your customers to only pay by cash. Nowadays not everyone carries cash. It’s important that you provide your customers with the option to pay with either debit cards (so maybe you should invest in a POS machine), or cheque or bank transfer. You can even look at accepting payments through your website if you have one.

muffin-1286213__340

  1. Create Bonds With Your Customers

Your customers don’t have to be your best friends. Get to know your customers by their names as well as some details about their lives (eg. birthdays, anniversaries, children’s birthdays), will go a long way in pleasing your customers.

So these are a few way you can ensure you don;t run out of customers. By finding new inventive and creative ways to keep your customers happy will ensure you have a customer for life which is great for any business.

If you can think of more ways, would love to hear them. Just comment below.

Let me help you make your money.

Why You Are Not Making Money In Your Cake Business

Okay you have finally taken the push and have started your cake business, maybe part or full time. You are passionate about baking. You have done business card, printed fliers and have gone for training to improve your skills, but still you are hardly getting any orders.

And when you finally get an order, the customer prices your cakes so low that you are telling yourself what is the point.

If this is you, please continue reading.

The hustle is real but here are some mistakes you probably are making that is preventing you from making money in your business:

Maybe when you become more popular you can expand your product range after you have done enough research and offer those unusual cake flavours.

cd1

  • What is social media marketing;

  • The different social media platforms;

  • and much more

5. You Discount And Negotiate Too Much

Once a potential customer starts complaining about your price or question your pricing or do not immediately order, you start offering discounts.

I know especially when you first start and really want to make a sale you give discount, offer extras, and promise all sorts of things just to get that order.

The problem with this, is that I might set of a trend and sooner or later you will be known as the cheap baker and you will be working for next to nothing.

cd3

  2. How to respond to customers who complain about your prices

  4. How To Price So You Do Not Lose Customers

“Are you going to allow  your business that you are so passionate about go to waste? Because if you keep going from month to month without making money…it’s only a matter of time”

Let’s solve this problem together.

Strategies To Get Customers For Your Cake Business

Every Cake Business Owner want one thing and that is more customers.

Are you frustrated because only a small number of people know about your business, even though you make good cakes?

Look! You can have the best cakes on the market, but if nobody knows about it – your business will fail!

Like it or not you need customers for your business for it to grow and to make money.

After all,

No Customers = No Business and No Income

If you want to be successful in your business you need to Market your cakes.

Whether you have just stated, you have a cake shop, or you bake from home, you need to have strategies in place to make your business more known.

So lets go through some of these strategies.

Strategy #1: Start Building A Contact List

Every business needs a way to stay in touch with potential customers and its own customers. And building a contact list is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to do that!

Every one of your customers has an email address and a phone number so I recommend you start collecting these details. You can even collect additional information such as their birthdays.

Once you get their email address, you can set up your email or sms management system to send promotional emails or texts to your customer’s to tell them about your cakes or any other deals that you want to offer or if its their birthday you can tell them they are eligible to a box of cupcakes or a 20% discount for their next order.

Once you are in constant touch with your customers, you are more than likely to be on  their mind when they need a cake, so start collecting this information from your customers.

Strategy #2: Be On Social Media

No matter what, first things first, you should have a  Facebook page for your company as this is the ideal place to market your business, and show off your gallery of cakes, create great posts and give information about your cakes and any promos you may be having.

Other social media platforms you should be on are Twitter, Instagram and maybe even Pinterest.

Strategy #3: Collaborate

Find Partners and collaborate with them. Make a list of strategic partners in your area and try and set appointments with them.  For instance you can approach children’s party venues and ask if they have any opportunities or present them with a deal that will work for both of you.

Or you could make a list of all the local businesses in your area, make an appointment, and give them some samples, and then let them know you’d be happy to cater their next celebration or office party.

eee4

Strategy #4: Use Testimonials

Have some satisfied customers? Let them tell you. Encourage your customers to send you some reviews and feedback. After a delivery, just send a message asking them how they liked the cake. Then post their testimonials on your social media platforms or website.

When people see these positive reviews, it will instill more trust in your cakes so in essence it will drive more sales.

Strategy #5: Have A Launch Party

Another way to encourage more business is to have like an open house event for your cake business.

Invite your friends and encourage them to invite their friends. Also invite people from your neighborhood, work and so on.Distribute fliers and provide free samples of your cakes for them to try. Also display some of your cakes on a nicely decorated cake table.

Talk to everyone and tell them about your cake business and try to persuade them to make an order.

eee1

Strategy #6: Always Have Your Business Cards And Fliers Handy

Always go everywhere with your business cards. Get some business cards printed with your company name, logo, telephone number and email address and hand them out to potential customers.

Also do not be shy, when next you go to your local supermarket or hairdressers, ask if you can leave a few of your flyers or business cards.

How To Make More Profits In Your Cake Business Month In Month Out

We are in this business to make money. Yes we love baking, and yes sometimes it does feel like work. But in order to survive in this business you need to know how to make money.

Here are some ideas and tips on how you can be making profits in your Cake Business.

1. Understand Who Your Customers Are

You need to know your customers and what they want. Once you have that information, you use all your marketing tactics to target that customer base. If you are selling wedding cakes, you target brides and young couples; you have no business advertising to mothers.

If you are providing cakes for the lower end of the market, then you should be advertising and showing up in secondary schools and universities.

ccc2

2. Know How To Price Your Cakes

You need to know how to price your cakes. You need to know the cost of ingredients, your labour time and how much profit you want to make.

Don’t let customers bully you to accept a low price, you are a skilled professional and should be paid as such. It is your business so you should be in charge of how much you price your cakes.

If Pricing is an issue for you, get my free pricing Guide here: http://www.subscribepage.com/r2l3a3

3. You Need To find A Product That Sells Well No Matter What

You need to find a product in your business that sells well. This has to be something that does not take a lot of time and is easy to make and brings in good money into the business.

For me this was when I started making Swirl Cakes. They take around 2 hours to make including the baking and they are inexpensive to produce too.
The good thing with these types of cakes is that they are ideal for most occasions.

What should you do?

The good thing about this type of method for you as a business is that they are speedy to make, and they sell for a good price.

To give you an example, for a 12” fondant cake with a floral theme I would charge N21,000. It would take me around 6-8 hours to make from scratch and the profit on this cake would be approx N9,000

A box of 12 cupcakes takes under 2 hours from scratch to make, costs no more than N3,000 to produce and sells for N8,000  making you a profit of N4,000

However, I can make 3 Nos. 6 inch Swirl Cakes in the time it takes me to make that one fondant cake, netting me around N4,000 profit per cake.
If you’re savvy with your planning you can do this quicker and for slightly less cost too making your profits even better.

When you are able to do this for your products, your client is happy as you are providing options for them selecting different versions of the cake they want in terms of price.

4. Know Your Business’s Peak Seasons

If you have been in business for a while, you should know what periods when you sell a lot of cakes. Do you sell more cakes during December which are the wedding and Christmas season? If this is so, you should plan for these by either getting more staff and making sure you have all the ingredients you need months before.

5. Don’t Offer Too Much Cake Varieties

You providing every type of cakes in every size, style and flavour will not make you rich. If you try and do this, you will be tired always, need a lot of ingredients and tools.

What should you do?

Instead choose a small range of cakes you will offer, for example if you have just a range of 3-4 products, you will have something to suit most clients. This doesn’t have to be restrictive at all but it does help you plan your time better.

For example you can offer boxed Cupcakes for the lower end of your pricing, then celebration cakes (birthday, anniversary, etc) for midrange pricing and, finally wedding cakes for the higher pricing market.

Your cupcakes can start from about N3,000, which are ideal for a small gifts.
Your mid-range celebration cakes can be from N10,000 for a 6 inch cake, these are cakes for bigger celebrations like a party or significant birthday.

Then finally your custom or  bespoke range is where your prices aren’t fixed as they are based on the hours that the cake will take you and the skill you will need to devote to it.

By having these distinct tiers of product your client will never be scared off by your pricing and if they would like a custom but haven’t got the budget then you have your celebration range to suit their needs and budget.

ccc5

6. Create Good Cakes

The best marketing you can do for your cake business is to make sure that your cakes are tasty and of high quality, that is, using quality ingredients.

Once your cakes are fabulous, you are certain that your customers will keep on returning and will spread the word.

They are a wealth of marketing strategies you can employ, which I regularly give you tips, but the starting point is that you have to have good cakes.

ccc4

7. Provide Excellent Customer Service

You need your customers coming back, so you need to give them a good experience all the time.

Deliver on time; answer all their questions in a pleasant way.

If there is a problem, solve it in a timely and with a smile. Customers remember the little things, and this helps you in retaining and keeping your customers.

This week, I want to share some of my best business advice and success tips so you’ll be prepared to start and grow your successful cake business in Nigeria.

Start Today

You can’t afford to sit around waiting for to get capital to start your business, or hoping and praying that an angel investor will come along to help you implement your idea or complain that you don’t have the time. If you do not have money to start your business, with as little as N4,000 you can buy ingredients and start selling cupcakes to people so little by little you can start raising your own capital to start or buy equipment for your business.

The only way to learn is by doing, stop complaining and harbouring negative thoughts, and stop making excuses. All these won’t help you start a business and it sure won’t help you have the income you want for yourself.

Have A Good Recipe Base

You must be consistent with your recipes. Do you have 2-3 different vanilla recipes? Once you have found a recipe you like which is tried and tested, keep to it. A customer does not want to be eating different versions of the same cake each time they make an order. Your cakes are your signature and we know a signature usually remains the same.

Cake education is a must. You should know the different types of cakes suitable for different uses like for sculpting, creating tiers, and so on. Also what preservatives to use to make cake last and how to change recipes to suit special dietary requirements or requests.

Have a Good List of Suppliers

It is always convenient to have a good list of suppliers who are reliable and provide good quality. You want a handy list of suppliers where you can readily get your cake supplies.

So do your research, Google and you can even ask your baker friends where they get their supplies from.

cake-3390301__340

Have a Clear Company Policy for giving Discounts

We all get these type of customers. Those you complain about our price, those who do not know the time and energy it takes to create a cake, those who want to pay next to nothing for a cake or just want it for free.

So how do you deal with these customers? Make it a point to have clear guideline as to when and who you will be giving discounts. Know how to charge for family and friends and the general public. For example you can make it a policy to give a 50% discount for family and friends and for the general public you will only go as low as 15% or offer them some cupcakes instead of a discount.

It’s your business, so your rules. Don’t let a customer dictate what price or discount you should give them.

Don’t let the bad days put you down

Like in all businesses, you will have good and bad days. You may deal with a difficult customer, or a cake may collapse as you are delivering or a whole month may go by and you haven’t had a single customer.

Yes it is disheartening and yes you may feel like giving up but this is your business and more than likely you depend on the income you generate from it so even though you have a bad day or a cake disaster,  just dry your tears and get on with it.

And lastly,

Build Relationships

Never stop building meaningful relationships with customers and other people in the  baking and event planning industry.

Don’t really view them all as your competitors. View them instead as collaborators  or potential partners. You never know what additional business you can get from these partnerships.

So what have you learnt so far from your cake business. Will love to hear from you.

Stop Planning, Start Doing, and Achieve More in Your Cake Business

Do you have some cake business aspirations that are beyond your current capabilities? It’s natural to dream of things that you want to do someday, but currently can’t. However, to realize your dreams, at some point you must stop planning and start taking action.

While planning is an important part of bringing your dreams to life, avoid dedicating more time to the mental preparation than to action. If you spend your entire life planning for what you will do in the future, then when will you actually start living?

Before I started my cake business wanted everything to be perfect, I wanted the perfect website, perfect pictures, perfect business plan, perfect economy, perfect everything. I soon realized that I was spending all my time planning instead of doing. If I was waiting for the perfect time to start, I am sure I will still be waiting today.

Even when I started going live on Facebook, I kept on postponing and posting, saying I will start when I have money to buy the perfect lighting equipment, good microphone and so on. Until I just decided one day to stop waiting and do it. It was perfect but it was a start. And the cake business show has been going from strength to strength. And have now expanded to YouTube and I still haven’t bought my perfect lighting equipment.

If you find yourself always postponing your activities because you feel your plans are yet not finalized or you are afraid, you need to stop planning and start taking action right away. You need to do something and stop worrying about perfection.

Here are a few important steps to help you pave the way:

Try these strategies to help jump start your goal-achieving actions:

  1. Actions speak louder than words

You’ve probably heard this statement before, but have you really considered the meaning? Taking action and achieving are more powerful than simply planning for the future. Start taking steps in the right direction while planning, instead of waiting for every detail of your plan to be complete.

  • Keep in mind that you can accomplish your goals as long as you’re moving in a forward direction. It may take some time, depending on how large your goal is, but moving forward will get you where you want to be. Taking action, regardless of how small, moves you forward.

For instance you want to create a website for your business but you are waiting to get enough money to hire a web developer. Why don’t you do it yourself. I created my cake website all by myself in the course of a 2 week Christmas break from my 9-5 job at that time. Just say each day you will do something like Day 1, open the platform and select a template, Day 2, select cake pictures, day 3- post cake pictures on site, and so on. Just dedicating a time each day to do something, you will see at the end of a period of time, you will be done, feel fulfilled and move on to the next task or goal.

  1. Mind Your Language

Which is more effective, “I am going to start my cake business,” or “I am starting my cake business”? How about the difference between “I am planning on going to a baking school,” and “I am currently attending a baking school”? The differences in these statements may have a profound impact on whether you’re actually going somewhere, or just thinking about it.

  • Try this: Rather than saying “I am going to start my cake business” (which is something you could say for years without doing anything!), take action to start your cake business.
  1. Break goals into smaller bites

Rather than creating a lengthy plan that will take several years to fully realize, why not break your goals into smaller pieces that you can achieve one at a time? Setting goals too far into the future can hamper your ability to take small steps in the right direction now.

  • For example, say you want to lose 100 pounds. Try setting goals to lose 1% of your body weight per week until you reach your final goal. Achieving several weight loss goals over a period of time will help keep you motivated rather than struggling endlessly for that one far-off goal.
  • Perhaps you want to achieve something over a period of time, such as making N500,000 this year from cake sales. In this case, you can break your goals into weeks, months or quarters. For you to make N500,000 in sales, you need to make about N40,000 in sales in each. This amount is achievable and realistic then you can now focus on marketing to those customers to achieve your monthly target. This will help you feel a sense of success with your progress as you work toward the larger goal of making N500,000.

Having  your plans broken down to small actionable steps that you can work on a day-to-day or monthly basis will help measure your progress and also help you to stop procrastinating.

Don’t just plan to achieve a goal. Plan to try new things as well. This will help you overcome the fear of failure.

cake 5

  1. Be Accountable

Make yourself accountable to somebody you respect. If you have a mentor in your life, talk to your mentor and share your plans with him/her. Accountability is a great motivator. For instance, you plan to quit your 9-5 to concentrate on your cake business, tell a friend to keep you accountable so you do it when you will say you will do it.

In fact I give thanks to a friend who made sure I stuck to the date I decided to resign from my job. I kept on postponing and postponing until one day she said give me a definite date that you will hand in you resignation letter and true to form on that date she called me and ask me if I had done it. That pushed me to take action. If I had not told her I would have just been saying later, later.

  1. Healthy competition is good

Healthy competition is a great way to stop planning and start doing. Have a competitive spirit. Compete with somebody who is doing better than you in your domain. If a fellow baker is posting 2 times a day, try and post something 3 times.

se9

  1. Believe in yourself

Lastly believe in yourself. Self-confidence is the key element in achieving anything.

Sometimes you may feel challenged to build the momentum you need to achieve goals and get where you want to be in life. Raise your standards and expect action from yourself instead of just thoughts and words.

If you’re struggling to move from planning to actual accomplishments, try breaking your goals into smaller pieces. You’ll be amazed at how motivational a little success can be!

So now what things are you going to take action on now. Will love to hear from you.

Achieving Goals That Really Matter For Your Cake Business

Happy May Day. While you are enjoying your bank holiday, I want to talk a bit about the importance of setting goals.

I am a great believer in setting goals. I set goals yearly, quarterly, monthly and daily. I may not achieve them all but they are always at the back of my mind so i know i have to do it.  Goals will make you get up in the morning, it will help you get things done.

If you want to make more money in your business, you can make a goals like to tell 5 new people daily about your business or you can set a goal to make a meeting weekly with a vendor with the aim of them putting your business on their vendor list.

Goal setting is one of the best ways to get ahead in life – but only if you’re setting your goals effectively!

Are you trying for unattainable goals that you aren’t really passionate about? Do you quickly give up on your goals? It can be easy to get discouraged, but you don’t have to end up there!

With the right strategies, you can set goals that really matter to you and meet them more easily than you ever imagined.

Most importantly, your goals should be yours and not someone else’s. The goals that your parents, friends, and family members have for you may not be the same for yourself.

What’s Important to YOU?

Too many people set goals to be rich, write a best-selling novel, or marry someone who’s famous, wealthy, or otherwise important or influential. If those are truly your dreams, there’s nothing wrong with them. However, if they’re just society’s dreams – and not yours – let them go, and think about what really matters to you. What do you want out of your life?

When you’re setting goals, stop and ask yourself, “What will bring you money, joy, fulfillment and happiness?”

image16

Your goals might include things like:

  • Having a cake shop
  • Earning a good income monthly from your business
  • Getting married
  • learning a new cake skill
  • Starting your own cake business
  • Changing careers
  • sending your children to a better school
  • Resigning from your job
  • Buying your own home
  • Having material wealth
  • travelling
  • Being physically fit
  • Being more spiritual

No matter what you choose or how many goals you have, you can reach them if you’re dedicated and committed to making them happen.

goals

Making Your Dreams Come True

Once you’ve decided what really matters to you and you set your goals, you can begin to make them a reality in your life. Although your goals will take some work, watching them come into fruition is exciting and satisfying!

Follow these tips to help you achieve your goals:

Keep Your Focus

Keep a picture of the life you desire at the forefront of your mind. When frivolous things try to distract you, as they will, remember to make choices according to what’s really important to you. In my bedroom i have a vision board of what i want to achieve in this life, in my business and so on. it includes where i want to live, the car i want to drive, the places i want to visit, the money i want to earn, anytime i feel down when things are not going my way, i look up at my vision board and it energizes me to take action. So how can you keep your focus:

  •  Take action toward your goal every day. Each day, find something you                     can do that will bring you a little closer to meeting your goal.
  • When challenges arise, getting discouraged won’t change anything, so                          seek  solutions that can put you back on track. Just stay focused and                            adjust your plans as necessary.

cake shop

Be Open to Change

Your goals aren’t set in stone. If you choose to change what you’re focused on and set a new goal, that doesn’t mean you’ve given up on your goals. It only means you’ve seen that your goals need to change, just as you change. That’s a sign of growth and wisdom.

Set Realistic Timelines

Some goals can be met in a day or a week, but larger goals often take months or years. When you set goals, it’s important to be realistic about how long you expect them to take.

         But mind that,

  • If it’s too far away, you might procrastinate, or you may not start at all.
  • If it’s too soon, you’ll be frustrated and discouraged if you don’t make your deadline.

image15

Divide your Goal into Small Steps

Another great way to reach your goals is to divide big goals into smaller ones. Each small goal is one step, or one task, on the way to achieving your ultimate goal.

  • Set individual deadlines for these small steps. This way, you’ll always be moving forward, one step at a time.
  • For example, if your goal is to start your own cake business, there are things you’ll need to look into like thinking of a name for your business, what type of cake do you want to sell. who do you want to sell to, registration, creating a website , and others. Each one of these tasks is one step. You could also subdivide these steps into even smaller goals.

Your Customers Are Out There

However good your cakes are, the simple truth is that no one will buy it if they don’t know you. And you can’t persuade anyone that they want or need your cakes unless you can clearly understand what it is your customers want and where you can market to them.

Knowing and understanding customer needs is at the centre of every successful business. Once you have this knowledge, you can use it to persuade potential and existing customers to buy your cakes.

Here are 5 ways to help you get more customers:

  1. Word Of Mouth Actually Works!

This I think is the oldest form of marketing and advertising used today. Word-of-mouth remains one of the most trusted methods in the world today because it is coming from someone you know, like and trust.

When a customer is happy and satisfied with a product or a service, it’s natural that they will share, recommend and tell their friends or people within their circle.

So you can view a satisfied customer as a means of free advertising and promotion for your business.

Word-of-mouth is so effective and powerful tool. But how can you encourage your customers to promote your business for you and use it for your advantage.

One thing you can do is to entice or encourage your customers or give them a reason to advertise your business. You can tell your customers that if they refer your business to another and that referral leads to an order, that customer will get a free box of cupcakes or get a discount on their next order.

cupcake-104654__340

2.      Treat Your Customers Right

If you treat your customer’s right, they will tell people about their experience. Genuinely talk to your customers. If they have a complaint or an issue, don’t just give them standard response .Genuinely talk with your customer, address your customers by name. Help to solve their problems. Ask them about the event that are having, the colour scheme, the number of invitees. As the customer reveal more details, you never know, they may be another money making transaction down the line.

people-2586896__340

3.      Offer Discounts and Special Offers

Offering discounts and special offers are also a powerful way to publicise your brand. To get more customers in your business, you can offer discounts and special offers to entice your customers. You can reach thousands of potential customers this way.

People love a deal. It gives them an opportunity to save money and enjoy something for less money.

In fact, discounts and offers usually sway customers to buy more of a product or service because that product may not be at that price next time.

An example is that on your social media pages, you can advertise deals such as buy a dozen cupcakes and get a box of 4 free.

4.      Expand your network

You should constantly be looking for new customers. You can rely on your existing network such as word of mouth to expand your customer base, but you may eventually run out of new customers. When you find yourself in this situation, you need to look to expanding your network.

You can make wonderful cakes, but if you do not have new contacts that want to order from you, your business will remain stagnant.

How do you go about growing your network? Attend networking events, join organizations, form partnerships, collaborate with other business partners, and watch your network grow.

cupcakes-1149695__340

  1. Be On Social Media

Many people now depend on the internet for information nowadays. People watch more of YouTube than they do television.

There are several social media platforms to choose. Social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, instagram. Snapchat, YouTube  are some of the top places where your potential customers hang out and it makes perfect sense that your business presence be felt on most of them.

So believe me, your customers are out there. You only have to look for them and persuade them to come to your business. So if you want to expand your customer base, just follow the tips above and enjoy getting booked out.

Have you tried any of these methods? How did it work for you? Will love to hear from you. Just comment below.

Business Lessons From My Holiday At Disney World

For the past few weeks I have been on vacation. Went to London and Florida where I treated the kids to a few days in Walt Disney World.

Disney World has been described as the happiest place on earth and I thank God he has given me the means and opportunity to take my children as I know they will cherish these memories forever.

Going to Disneyworld is not cheap. From flights, to hotels and park tickets. It can cost a small fortune. And how was I able to afford this? It is from exactly what I am doing now. My business and not giving up on my dreams.

When we got to the themeparks I was wooed by the crowd. On that day alone, it was estimated that 60,000 people were visiting the Disney parks and it is not just tourists that visit the parks, the Florida residents themselves treat it as an ultimate vacation destination.

Almost everyone has heard of Disney, from their films, merchandise, characters, clothes, their resorts and parks. How did Disney become a household name?  Almost year round, people all over the world troop, plan and aspire to go to Disneyworld or Disneyland.

Disney world has been described as the happiest place on earth and I thank God he has given me the means and opportunity to take my children as I know they will cherish these memories forever.

While I was there enjoying my trip to the happiest place on earth I could not help myself observing business ideas which one can apply to one’s business. I’ll also offer some insight into how you can take these ideas and apply them to your business to see more growth in your business.

disney 1

1. Treat Your Customers Right

When you go to any Disney theme park, you are met with happy staff that are very much happy to help. Even if they are passing by, they will ask if you need any assistance. I remember one occasion in Epcot Centre I was taking a picture of my kids and my mum. Of course i too wanted to be in the picture so me and my mum took turns taking the pictures. A staff walking by asked to take our picture together. We didn’t even need to ask, she observed a problem and offered a solution.

To be successful in business you need to treat your customer right, from the moment they make an enquiry, to the moment you deliver including after sales service. Treat any complaints professionally. Don’t take your frustration out on the customer. Follow up, talk to them. Find out their needs and problems and try to offer solutions.

disney4.jpg

2. Incorporate Different Pricing Tiers

If you’ve ever planned a trip to Disneyland, you know that the different pricing options can be a bit overwhelming.

There are different pricing packages, you can buy tickets to all the Disney parks or just a single park or buy tickets allowing you to visit multiple parks in a single day. There are even other packages where it includes hotel stays, princess makeovers and more.

So why does it have different pricing systems.

Because different people want different things, so it’s created a pricing structure to suit the pocket of different people so at least everyone  can experience the magic that is Disney whatever your pocket.

Does your business offer multiple pricing packages?

How do you do that?

Simply by offering 3 alternatives for the client.

A budget option, midrange and expensive option.

So you will be offering 3 alternatives to the inquiry, or example:

  1. Box of 12 cupcakes with butter cream icing is N5000.
  2. Small 8 inch round buttercream cake is N8,000.
  3. Fondant covered, 1 tier, 8 inch round cake is N15,000

Now with that, the customer feels they have options or a choice. To leave them when they say ‘Ah no that is really expensive’’ leaves them with no options at all.

But by spending an extra 1-2 minutes teaching and giving 3 alternatives, the customer is back in charge with now making a more informed choice, within their budget.

3. Be Innovative

The Disney I visited as a child is not really the same when I visited with my kids. It is much better. They now offer fast track at certain times so you can skip the lines and simply go on the ride. You can check how long you’ll have to wait to go on a ride and so on. There are constantly looking for ways to improve their brand, business and customer satisfaction.

In your business you should continually be looking for things to make your customer experience better.  Get feedback from your customers on how you can improve their experience, then find innovative ways to solve their problem.

And lastly.

disney 3

4.     Never Give Up

Did you know that Walt Disney did not just become a success.  He started many companies that failed. Instead of giving in or giving up, Mr Walt Disney never gave up.

Want A Successful Cake Business? Do Not Make These Mistakes!

During my years as a cake business coach, I observed some common mistakes made by cake business owners. It’s one thing to be a skilled Baker, but it’s something quite different to be the owner of a successful Cake business.

Yes, making mistakes is part of life and it’s only by learning from those mistakes that we become better business owners, but knowing the common mistakes to avoid will make you more successful in the long run.
I remember when I first started and i baked a lovely 12 inch cake covered with buttercream roses. it took days to make and because i didn’t know how to price  properly, the customer only paid a very small amount and i was so angry with yourself.
Here are a few of the most common mistakes you should try to avoid as a Cake Business owner:

#1: Not Knowing You Are A Legal Business Owner

Most of us started like this- you make a cake for a few friends and they like it, and tell you to go into business. So you give it a try, make a cake for someone and suddenly you’re in business.

You have conducted your first business transaction. So you are no longer a hobby baker. The thing you have to realize is that the moment you charge for a cake, you’ve moved from hobby to professional.

In most cases, selling your cakes means you’re already a legally registered business. Once you start collecting money for your cakes. The rules become different, and you need to think about things in a different way  – even if your cakes are not perfect or you only charged a few Naira for your cakes.
You have to conduct yourself more professionally, you need to have invoices, a dedicated bank account, email address, invoices and receipts, etc.

cake 20

#2: Working For Free

You need to charge adequately for your time and effort. Even if you are new in the cake business, my advice is to always know what your cakes are worth, and refuse to negotiate below a certain price.

Stop making cakes for free( I know it is usually family and friends that are guilty of this). You are a skilled professional so you should be paid a such. Not only should your costs be covered but also you should be making profit for every cake you sell.
If someone says you should bake a cake for free on the promise of future orders, Don’t do it. If it is for charity, you can decide to do it (maybe twice a year) but for anyone else, they should pay. Will they go to a doctor and tell them to treat them for free? You are providing a service, so you should be paid for the service you are rendering.

#3: Waiting For Customers To Just Appear

Customers do not just fall from the sky. You need to market and get on social media to advertise your cake business. Word of mouth is good and helps bring in customers, but you can’t always rely on that.
The only way you can get business is to market, market, market. Get your business cards and flyers out and go and distribute it to where your customers are. Do Facebook Ads, be active on social media, go to events and tell people about your business.
If you are just home waiting, you will not get customers. You need to go out there and market.
cake 25

#4: Not Keeping Track Of Your Expenses

Now that you are in business, you should know the cost of being in business. Not only the cost of ingredients, but other things like your stationary, fuel and even phone credit. All these things should be accounted for so you can add them to the cost of your cake.
You are not working for free or using your own money to stay in business.
Every expense should be accounted for and you have to keep track of such monies so at the end of the day you will know if you are making a profit or loss. So having a separate business account and bookkeeping books are essential for your business.

#5: Living In A Cake Fantasy

Running a professional cake business, is not so easy. Many feel you will become a millionaire overnight just by baking cakes.
That is far from the truth.

The reality is that the cake baking and decorating plays a small part.
Not only will you be baking, but you will be doing marketing, social media, customer service, selling, ordering supplies, negotiating with customers and so on. Those business-related tasks are required in running your business so don’t ignore them.

#6: Worrying About The Competition

As a cake business owner, you need to know your competition, like what they charge and what type of cakes they sell. Knowing this is information is vital because it helps you make decisions on how you can improve so that you can stand out from the crowd.

However, if you’re spending the time comparing yourself to the competition and complaining about other bakers is a complete waste of your time.
Spend that time improving your customer service, marketing your business, developing new products, and getting feedback from  new and existing customers.

cake 24

#7: Not Knowing How To Set Prices

You should not just pull prices from the air. It is a calculated process.

It’s important to cost properly. The main reasons why costing properly is very important,

  1. is because if you do it well, you will make a profit in your business;
  2. You will be able to know where to reduce your costs and expenses;
  3. You will know how to give discounts and offers without making a loss.

When pricing your cakes, you should note the cost of ingredients, your profit, your labour, utility and sundry costs.

To know more about pricing register for the Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business.
cake 26

#8: Failing To Have A Business Plan

I know! I know! this can be a hassle, but it is worth doing. When you’ve started your new cake business try to take a break and write a business plan.  Know this can be quite boring especially when you not only have to bake, but market, sell and so on.
However, without a plan, you are unlikely to achieve long-term success. A business plan helps you plan your goals and tracks your progress. It provides a continuous frame of reference for your cake business, defining your goals, and making you accountable. So it is worth having one.

So really the Baking is the easy part and it becomes more difficult when you have to deal with the business part. But when you avoid the mistakes we discussed above, you will be on your way to having a successful business.

‘Remember you’re A Cake Business Owner, not just a Baker

What mistakes have you made while being a business owner and have you learnt what went wrong. Will love to hear about your experiences.

5 Ways To Keep Your Customers Coming Back For Your Cakes

After you have made a sale, don’t just move on to the next potential customers. A customer just parted with their money for one of your cakes. So it is a good idea to keep them as a customer for life.

You should find ways to increase sales to your existing customers. It will be a lot cheaper than looking for new ones. Those existing customers have already tasted and paid for your cakes, so the hard work is already done.

Here are a few promotional ideas so that you do not lose customers and they keep on coming back for more of your awesome cakes.

1. Do not forget your customer

You should devote some time after a sale to reconnect with your customers. You can send them an email asking them if they enjoyed the cake they ordered. This is an opportunity for you to get feedback and also get a great testimonial which you can use for your social media or website by the way.

You could send them a voucher where they will get a discount for their next order, or you could simply send them monthly newsletters so that you will be on their mind often.

mo6

2. Remember Things About Your Customer

Surprise your customers by remembering important details about them when you contact them. You do not need to know real personal details about your customers, it can be simple things like remembering their name, or their birthday or their spouse birthday or anniversary.

Once you have this information, you can contact them before the event and ask them if you can do the cake for their husband, or child’s birthday. It will be a surprise for them that you remembered and will take off the hassle of you dealing with last minute orders.

3. Make it Easy for customers to Contact you

If you have a website, make sure there is an area on all the pages of how hey can reach you, whether it is your phone number, or email or if you want them to order online. Do not make it difficult or hard for customers to know how to reach you.

If it is a Facebook Page you have, make sure at the top of that page are all the details of how customers can make there order. The same goes for your Instagram Page. Also, always respond in a very timely manner all your emails, social media enquirers or comments or missed calls. If you don’t you will be losing that customer.

mo5

4. Say Thank You

A simple thank you goes a long way. Show appreciation for your customers. You can express your gratitude by emailing your customers after a sale with a Thank you message.

You can even do more like sending them a discount voucher or tell them to recommend you business to their friends and if that friend makes an order they will receive a free box of cupcakes.

5. Communicate

Want your customers coming back?Ask them. Talk to your customers. You can send out feedback forms or surveys. This will give you a lot of information of how you can improve your business. And once you have that information, implement it.

Have more ideas on how to keep your customers coming back? Will love to hear them. Just comment below.

Wondering How To Price Your Cakes? Let Me Show You How

I decided to repost this article that i posted some time back on how to price your cakes. You have to realize that once you get your pricing sorted you can now move and pay attention to other important aspects of your cake business like marketing.

Another reason why you need to price and cost properly is that you will determine the profit your business makes and you can now know where to reduce costs and when you can give discounts without you losing money

Here are the basics so you can make a start on pricing your cakes for profit.

pricing masterclass 3.jpg

1: Labour costs

Step 1 is labour, often the undercharged part of the cake pricing formula. However, when you know you are being paid a decent salary then you making a cake becomes more enjoyable.

But if you aren’t getting any good wage, then it can be like a chore or a job and you will feel demotivated. You do not want to work for nothing.

To help you gain a control on the labour aspect, make a note of what you honestly want your hourly rate to be. This can be anywhere from N500 – N5,000 an hour. It all depends on you, your skill level, years of experience.

If you are just starting out, you may charge N400- N1,000 an hour, When you start getting better in your skill level, you can increase your hourly rate to maybe N1,500 or N3,000 an hour.

So now that you know your hourly rate. Next start to monitor how long each type of cake takes to create. Record everything, from the initial enquiry, shopping to the mixing, baking, cooling, cleaning, decorating, delivery, set up, etc.

So if it takes you 3 hours to do a vanilla cake and your hourly rate is N1,000 an hour, then your labour wage/salary is N3,000.

Do this for every cake you do and make a note of it, then you will have a record of what to charge for the cakes you sell.

2: Cost of Ingredients

I know this can be quite time consuming part.  If you are making cupcakes or small individual cakes it is important to know the price of one so make sure you calculate every batch.

So when you are shopping for ingredients, take note how much the eggs, flour, butter, margarine, etc costs.

3: Sundry Costs or Extra Costs

Similar to step 3 this is fairly simple to cost, and again. Sundry costs, are things like cakeboards, boxes, ribbons, dowels, etc

ri75

REGISTER FOR THE MASTERCLASS HERE

4: Utility Costs

I know calculating Utility costs are a little trickier to calculate as you have to look at your bills or think of an estimate or figure to cover your utility.

But how many of us have time for this, again if this is too much trouble, just come up with an estimate amount.

ri76

5: Profit

The profit is money that you can invest back into your business. So that you can afford that shop you want, buy new cake equipment, create a website, buy flyers, generally market your business, and outsource your bookkeeping, admin, etc.

How much profit you add to your cake price is your choice. But aim for at least somewhere between 15% – 60% profit.

ee23

REGISTER FOR THE MASTERCLASS HERE

6: The Total Price

The final step is calculating steps 1 – 6

(Labour + Cost of Ingredients + Sundry Costs + Utility

Costs) x Profit = Total Cake Price

Practical Example,

Bose of Bose Cakes and Bakes has an order for a 10 inch fondant vanilla birthday cake with small piping detail and a few fondant roses on an iced cake board and packaged in a box.

Bose starts calculating:

Labour – N1,000 x 5 hours = N5000

 Ingredients Costs = N2000

Sundry Costs = N600

Utility Costs = N450

Profit x 30%

The Formula (N5000+ N2000+ N600+ N450) x 30% = N10,465

Therefore, the total price Bose will quote to the customer is N10,465.

So this is a simple method I recommend you use to price your cakes. Once you have mastered this Formula, you can change and adapt it from time to time.

Will love to hear from you. How do you currently price your cakes? How has it worked for you s far? Comment below please.

….the customer is indecisive, so they need to think about it or ask their partner.

IS PRICING YOUR CAKES A PROBLEM FOR YOU?

Tip 1: Be sure to talk to at least 2-5 people every day about your cake business

Talk to people. Tell them what you do.

You cannot just sit with your phone every day hoping that customers will magically appear.

Too many bakers rely on the Hoping and Praying Method for getting customers and really it doesn’t work.

Spending time looking at recipes or just posting occasionally on Facebook will not make you the type of money you need to sustain your business. You must get out of the house.

If you are determined and make a commitment to talk to 2-5 different people about the type of cakes you make, and what you can do for them, you’ll be surprised at the change this can make in your business. Don’t forget to give them your business cards or flier.

Tip 2: Know where your target market is and go and meet them

Same thing with the above. Yes you should talk with people everyday. But you can go one step further and talk to your right people. If you are selling wedding cakes and you mostly talk to mothers, you won’t be getting many orders for wedding cakes.

You need to do your research, find out where your ideal customers hang out and go and market there.

If your ideal customers are mothers, you need to go to schools, churches, bible study groups, PTA groups and so on.

Tip 3: Be present on  social media Groups

Be very visible on various social media groups especially on Facebook and Instagram. But don’t just join those groups and be silent. Make yourself noticeable by providing value, support and help.

This is a long term marketing strategy so don’t expect to get customers right away.

Remember people have to see you more than 7 times before they will even think of ordering from you. That’s why you need to be very present in these groups.

So join these groups add great, valuable, content, answer questions, engage in conversations. This will help you build your know, like and trust factor.

Tip 4: Follow up.

You need to follow up. You can be leaving money on the table if you do not follow up.

If an inquiry fails to get back to you, call them up and ask them if they wish to go ahead with the order. If after sending your quote, you do not hear from them, call them and give them other price options to meet their budget.

So if you want more money, make sure you follow up and you will see an improvement to your sales.

Tip 5: Stand out from the crowd

The baking industry has a lot of competition and all bakers are going after the same customers. So you need to do something to make them come from you.

One idea is to offer them something free to pull them to you. Tell them that if they order a cake from you, they will get a free box of cupcakes. Just make sure you’re giving something away of value. Something that you can charge for.

Tip 6: Be a solution provider

You’re in business so you can offer solutions to customer’s problems. Think about what solutions you can offer to solve your customer’s problems.

As a baker, you make cakes to mark memorable occasions. What if you come across a customer who need a cake urgently for that day, can you solve that problem? Or if a customer also needs help decorating the cake table, can you do that?

Just think of common issues that may crop up when someone needs a cake and market what solutions you can offer them.

Tip 7: Ask for referrals

Your happy and satisfied customers are happy to recommend your business.  Reach out to your customers and ask them if they know anyone that has a birthday coming up and if they make an order, then that customer will get something for free sent to them.

Will love to hear from you. Can you think of any any additional ways to make potential customers book from you or have you tried some of these tips. How did it work for you? Comment below please.
