Finding your niche for your cake business

6 Rules For Success In Your Cake Business

We all want success. We want to be successful in life, in our finances, in our families and in our business.

To have a successful business, it takes a lot of time, sacrifice and hard work. You could fail at a number of things trying to reach your goal but the important thing is to never give up.

Success is not a straight line; it consists of a lot of loops, working through the night, not spending time with the kids, lots of No’s and rejections. Very much like this picture. But eventually we will get our breakthrough.

 ri18

To make things a tad bit easier I have compiled 6 rules of success to help you In your cake business so the road to your success can be a little less crooked.

RULE #1: Stick to one thing

Apple has the iPhone. Coca Cola sells carbonated drinks. Sony does electronics.

The most successful companies and people always have one thing they’re known for. And they focus on refining and honing that particular skill.

This is the opposite of what most people think. Most people think they have to stay “busy”, do a lot of business at the same time, do lots of things to be successful.

Have you come across a serial entrepreneur, one that does a number of things at the same time? She sells clothes, does small chops, sells cakes and also a party planner.

If you are selling cakes stick to it. If you don’t, you will only confuse your customers. Who may not be sure what exactly you do.

Yes you can do other business relating to the food industry if you cannot help yourself.

Real success comes from a focus on doing the right things one at a time not more things just for the sake of doing them.

That’s one of the key reasons I created the Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business. This is where i give you a step-by-step system, on how to price and grow your cake business. Register to be on the waiting list here and you will be informed when it opens.

If you want to build a successful cake business in 2018, I’d encourage you to stick to selling cakes and only bakery related products until you are successful.

ri19

RULE #2: Don’t skip on Quality

The success of any cake business depends largely on the quality of your cakes. Develop a range of baked goods that stand apart from those sold at other places or other cake businesses.

Creating a niche for yourself, such as stunning cupcakes or unusual pastries, can help set you apart and build a loyal customer base. Even the most beautiful cake will not impress anyone if it does not taste good, though, so take the time to build your skills and learn proper techniques to create delicious treats that will ensure repeat customers for your business.

RULE #3: Ask for referrals

Word of mouth is essential for the growth of your cake business. You can sustain a good income by just having your loyal customers vouch for your business. To encourage this, here are a few ideas:

  • When you deliver a cake, give the customer some of your business cards and encourage them to share with their friends.
  • If a customer sends you a message that they liked your cakes, thank them and then send them a link to your Facebook business page asking them to leave a review.
  • Make it easy for your customers to give referrals and support your business. Tell them how much you appreciate them recommending your business.
  • Tell your customers that if they recommend your business to a friend and that friend makes an order, they will receive a free box of cupcakes as a thank you.

 ri22

RULE #4: Research your market

You should research the market to determine how you can give potential customers what they want — and how much they are willing to pay for it.

For example, there may be a lack of sugar free baked products in your area, and focusing your business on those types of items can attract customers and increase your chances of success.

No matter what you choose to specialize in, you should set prices that reflect those costs, and the cost of your time to create those type of baked goods. For example, if you use only high quality ingredients, your costs will be higher than average, and your prices need to reflect those costs.

RULE #5: Set rules for your business

As a cake business owner, to avoid challenges or problems it is good to set rules or policies in place that allow you to better serve your clients. Some rules you can set in your business are:

  • Demand a deposit- when you require a deposit when placing an order, it means spending your limited time with only people who are seriousabout ordering a cake
  • If it is a large order, like a wedding cake, they must pay the balance in full, 2 weeks in advance.
  • Make it a standard that Friends and Family only get a 20% discount. Friends and family can be our worst customers; they make last minute orders and want it for free. So when such family want a cake, you can tell them that you are a growing business and cannot give them a free cake but will give them a 20% friends and family discount.
  • Set a minimum order so you do not have to deal with people who only want to order 2 cupcakes.

ri21

RULE #6: Dream Big

I came across a saying that someone said. The saying goes thus, “You can either start a local coffee shop or you can start Starbucks. Either way you’ll work the same amount of time, so it’s better to start Starbucks.

What this means is that there is no reason to think small. Dream big and have big goals.

Each month I set a series of goals. The money I want to make, the products I want to create and sell, the books I want to read. Every day is planned at achieving my ultimate goal of having a mega successful and profitable cake business.

It’s vital you have a deep purpose, a goal, something that makes you jump out of bed each morning. If not you will just be going day by day going with the flow.

In the Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business I provide goal planning workbooks, action plan and marketing plans to help you get started in planning your cake business success. Register for the master class here.

7 ways For Your Cake Business To Really Stand Out From Your Competitors

You know your cakes are great and you know you bake of the tastiest cakes in town, but what about the competition?

It’s fair to say that there are a lot of bakers out there, and for you to make good money in this industry you have to find a way to stand out from the crowd.

First of all.

It really doesn’t matter about what your local competition is doing.

Because you can find something about you and your business that will make you to stand out from my competition.

But How can you do that?

Here are 7 ways to creating a more profitable cake business and make you really stand out from the crowd

1. Create A Brand

Take some time to think hard about your target market, about who you want to sell to and who you want to attract and build your brand around that. Your brand is your logo, your designs or even your customer service. If you are selling to corporate organisations, your brand and image must be one that is professional and formal. If your target are mothers for example, your brand will still be professional but can be more informal.

2. Find your own Niche

What is a niche? A Niche denotes or relates to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.

So why is finding a niche so important for your cake business?

Everyone loves cakes and that helps make it a growing market, which is good, but when you are just starting out in this business, this can be a problem.

So in order to make your cake business known in a rather crowded market, you need to find your niche.

Discovering your niche will help you set yourself apart from the competition.  This enables you have a clear area to focus on, to set a target customer base, plus it will help your customers know what you sell, which will help maximise your profits.

You might think that your customers are everyone. But if you think everyone is your customer, you are wrong. Because if you are selling to everyone, you are actually not selling to anyone.

But what niche should you choose, well that is up to you and what is your passion.

To know more about niches you can read more here:

https://bakingbusinessschool.com.ng/2017/01/18/finding-your-niche-for-your-cake-business/

3. Find something of Value

This means giving your customers value for their money so they will keep coming back to you. Give your customers something extra so they know they are getting a good deal. It can be a discount off their next order, free delivery or a free box of cupcakes with any order of a certain amount? Offering value doesn’t have to cost a huge amount but it can ensure that your customers will remember you and want to order from you in the future.

4. Stay ahead in your Industry

Like everything else, cakes go through trends and fashions and they can change very quickly. Think about it. A few years ago, who knew cupcakes would be the in thing? The easiest way to keep yourself ahead of the trend is by looking on the internet to see the latest trends, developments and news in the cake industry .If you see something you like and no one else in is doing it. Be the first and add it to your product line.

5. Find ways to be Unique

Find something different about your business and yourself and market that. Be different, be daring and be inspirational. Create your own recipes, revive old recipes and put your personal stamp on it.

f30

6. Give good Customer service

One of the best ways to advertise your business is through word of mouth, and if your customers like you then they are going to let their friends and family know. So answer the phone with a smile, be friendly. Do more than what you promised. A happy customer goes a long way.

7. Focus on making Money

Focus on how you can make your income goals everyday.

I focus on bringing in the money every day. Don’t care what the “competition” has on their menu, or websites, or what she’s working with. Because really, what she’s doing has nothing to do with you.

When you focus on making your business better, you won’t have time to be worrying about the completion but find innovative ways to make money in your business.

I hope these  steps help you truly focus on your business instead of thinking about your local competition.

Use these strategies and mindset shifts to help you earn more income in your business and not worry about the competition and look for unique and creative ways to market your business.

How To Make Your Cake Business Stand Out From The Crowd (Vol II)

I did a post on this topic some time back. You can read it here. But I still get a lot of emails from bakers asking how they are able to create a niche for themselves. So that is why i decided to revisit  and expand this post and add some more tips on how you can make your cake  business stand out from the numerous bakers out there.

1. Know your Brand

A strong brand will help your customers remember you.  Branding is not just about your logo or the colours you use or how your website is, it also translates to how you treat your customers and how you portray your business.

2 Give great  customer service always

They say in Nigeria, we don’t know about customers service. How may times have you been to an eatry or a supermarket and the workers don’t smile and if you ask for their help, it is like you are disturbing them.

So be an exception to the rule. No matter how you feel, give great customer service. Answer your work phone with a smile, listen to the customers. Yes, you will come across some customers that are demanding, or even rude. But, ultimately, the relationship you have with your customers is what’s going to keep them coming back for more.

So go the extra mile for your customers. They are paying you after all.

sv60

3. Create a Niche for yourself

Think about where you position yourself in the industry. Are you good at making novelty cakes, or wedding cakes or fat free cakes. Do you only use a special type of ingredient that makes your cakes so scrumptious? Think about something that makes you unique form others and use that feature to market your business. Think about what you want to be known for? For example, you could be known for making awesome cupcakes and call yourself the Cupcake Queen.

4. Make them an offer they cannot refuse

Make an offer to our customers that will make them come back for more. You could do a special deal on pastries, cupcakes or a special discount for birthday cakes.

sv61

5. Offer something of value

It is worth offering something extra to your customers. It does not have to cost you a lot of money to do this. You can just simply give existing customers a discount off their next order,  or maybe give them free delivery or you can give a free birthday card with every birthday cake? Little things like this will  can ensure that your customers keep coming back to order from you again.

6. Have Social media skills

Your business needs to be online. Use your website and social media to your advantage. Engage with your customers on social media.

If you aren’t confident with on how you can market effectively using social media – fear not! Join the waiting list here to be part of a Course to teach you how to market, price, plan and sell your cakes.

7. Market what makes you different

Whatever makes you unique of different from the others, don’t just keep it to yourself. Shout it loud. Tell this to all you potential and existing customers. The only way you can stand out from the crowd is telling your customers so.

sv62

8. Try something different

Why don’t you be different from the norm. Expand your product line and do different type of cake designs. Do something that is totally different from what is out there. And when you do market it superbly on social media.

9. Enter cake competitions

So this will show people that you are a serious cake business owner and your brand can sky rocket. It will also help you to improve your networking and presentation skills.

If you are struggling with getting customers for their cakes, I have designed an online course that will solve this problem by showing you how to market, sell, price, plan, structure and brand your business so you are constantly selling to the right people who want your cakes.

How To Get People To Buy Your Cakes

In order for your cake business to thrive, you need to find the right customers for your business.

Selling to the appropriate customers may be obvious, but many cake business owners struggle to find the right way to convert potentials or people who enquire about your cakes to customers.

Identifying customer buying habits is an essential part of marketing and growing your business. So, how do you figure out why customers buy your cakes?

This blogpost aims to explain customer buying habits to help you figure out why people buy cakes and how you can get them to buy your delicious treats.

By examining the buying habits of your customers, you’ll be better able to build a marketing plan that taps into the buying habits of your target customer which would eventually drive more sales.

So how do you do this?

You have to know how to make them buy from you

The psychology in this are called marketing triggers and i will tell you the emotional marketing triggers that determine why people buy cakes.

Emotional Marketing Triggers that Determine Why We Buy Cakes

When you understand the marketing triggers that make people buy then you can sell more. And you can find more eager customers.

Our emotions trigger us to buy

Don’t make the mistake thinking that people buy what they need. People buy what they want.  We are driven by their emotions.

If you understand the emotional reasons why your customers buy cakes then you can begin to trigger these emotions when you are talking to your customers or when you are marketing your cakes.

sp102

1. Love

What do your customers love? It might include their family, children, business, career, culture, hobbies, books, personal time etc. Do they buy from you for one of these loves? If so how can you recognize and encourage others with the same love?

Love is a powerful emotion. We do strange things when in love and in the name of love. People will shower their loved ones with beautiful and expensive gifts.  So you can use love to sell your cakes, like during vals day or birthday cakes for loved ones.

2. To show off

Yes we all should be humble, but sometimes people wanting to show off can be good for your business. Some people like to throw elaborate parties and the reason they do this is to show people their wealth, their home, etc. So you can tap into that if you do over the top , extraordinary and elaborate cakes that no one else does. So your cakes can cater to these sort of people.

sp104
3. Guilt

Often it might be hard to know the real reason someone buys something for someone or gives a gift. Was it love or guilt? “Is guilt the real reason behind spending a lot of money on Christmas, Valentines and Mothers’ Day?”

Can the guilt of not buying motivate your potential customer into buying your cakes? Can you use guilt to sell your cakes? Like saying in your marketing campaign something like ‘when was the last time you bought your precious wife or mum a gift, someone who has loved you and nurtured you,  then buy your mother a mother’s day cake or this lovely cake’.

There are also other  emotional triggers like Fear, greed and pride, but i don’t think they relate to selling cakes much

So I hope i have given you some ideas in your marketing campaigns.

Marketing is only effective if it reaches the right people.

Identifying the things that influence buying decisions enables you to leverage these factors to reach more customers.  Once you understand all these, you will be more successful when you market and sell to potential customers.

I will love to hear from you. How do you think you can use these emotional triggers to help you in your cake business?

Please share this post to your fellow bakers. I am sure they will get tremendous benefit from this information.

How To Find The Right Customers For Your Cake Business

Another week is upon us albeit a rainy one in my part of the world.

It was the first day of school for my kids and they were so excited to be starting a new class.

They woke up early, ready to wear their new school uniforms and couldn’t wait  to head to school with their new bags. Their excitement was certainly infectious.

Looking at them, I wonder why we adults get apprehensive or scared when we encounter a new thing. We get scared to start a business, to leave a job, to chase that customer or contact, to make that phone call or to take that course. So why can’t we be like little children and go with excitement for any new venture.

z and c

Kids all ready for the new school year

So in today’s blogpost, I want to tackle a topic which is very dear to us Bakers and that is getting customers.

So how do we get customers? Well first we need to find the right customers.

Attracting the ‘right kinds of customers,’ does not happen by accident nor does it happen by just creating great looking and tasteful cakes and thinking that they will just come.

The way to get the kind of customers you want can be done by going through 3 steps:

se9

Step 1: figure out who these people are.

You need to know in great detail the profile of your ideal clients.

Your ideal clients are the people you want to order from you or to come to your shop.

So think about this.

Are these people  going to be women, mothers. professionals, people around your neighbourhood? How old are they? What kind of event are they usually planning? What type of cakes can they afford? What type and flavour of cake do they order? Where do they shop for their groceries? Do they throw parties often? You need to have a profile in your head of your customer.

And while you are doing this, you have be realistic with your expectations. Just because there is a ready market out there for a particular type of cake, does not mean that you should do those type of cakes.

If you hate doing wedding cakes, then your ideal client is not a bride. Similarly, if you’re a beginner and you’re building your skills up, your ideal client may not be a person who wants like complicated cake designs

se7

Step 2: Figure out how they might find you.

Think like your ideal customer. Think about where would they go to find out about your cake business?

What might they expect to find when they come across your website or shop? What do you think they would  be looking for on your website – would it be pricing information, your cake pictures or your contact info to make an order

Do some research on brands that are in a similar to yours (or where you want your business to be like in the future.) If the kind of people who buy from LV or cake shops like Cakes by Tosan are the clients you want to buy from you, go and look at how they attract clients. Where and how are they advertising,, what extra service do those companies offer?

Search and check out the website of the most expensive bakery you know  even if it’s not in Nigeria. What’s the overall look of their website? What does their packaging look like? A place like Shoprite advertises and prices entirely differently to Cakes by Tosan just like a gourmet cupcake shop would advertise differently to a chain bakery.

All of them manage to be in business so please do not think that your only choice is to be for rich people.

se8

Step 3: Be that kind of business your customer wants

Sometimes you may be asking yourself why , “Why do people think I make cheap cakes? I am not Shoprite. If this is so, then look at your business especially pictures of your cakes. If your cakes (while you thinking it looks nice) are photographed not very well or on a messy table, or the pictures are dark or, you don’t have a website.

I’m pretty sure successful cake companies do not do that. Suppose your ideal client is a bride with a lot of money to spend. She’s going to be looking at your business based on what your website looks like. She will be looking at your cakes photos , your reviews, and what customers you have worked with.

Still on brides, when she was coming for a consultation, did you give her samples of your cakes wrapped in plastic, or did you serve them to her on a lovely plate with some nice cutlery?

If you gave her a sample box to take home, was it in those cheap plastic transparent containers or maybe you just put it in a nylon bag, or did you put it in a white box with a nice ribbon tied around it.

Another example is that if you make children’ cakes and your target market are mothers, did you have a box of books and toys for her kids to play with while you consulted with her? Do you provide free birthday candles with every cake?  Do you offer free delivery to save her the wahala of coming to pick it up?

Your ideal customers do not just fall from the sky – they know to come there because you’ve told them to come to you, and they stay with you because you give them exactly what they want.

If you want to stop attracting cheap customers, stop acting like a cheap cake business.

So here is wishing you a lovely week. Make it a goal today to do something you have been avoiding so you can attract the right customers.

Tips On Getting Started With A Social Media Site For Your Cake Business

Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Twitter are great for cake businesses.Today, social media sites are no longer just an ingenious way for people to meet, connect and share. It is now also one of the most powerful advertising tools which where cake business owners can use to connect to their customers.

However, it is noteworthy that social media marketing is like a double-edged sword – it is something that needs to be wielded correctly. In the hands of a skilled marketer, it is an effective sales tool. But in the hands of an amateur, it can turn success into demise.

Here are tips to keep in mind when you are using social media for marketing for your cake business.

  1. Make a draft plan of the contents first

Getting started without a plan can lead to a messy start. This will not be good for your company image. So before you make your social media account available, make sure that you planned for its contents and design first.

  1. Come up with an editorial calendar

You may have plenty of things you want to share and say. But if you post all of them at the same, people will get confused. Also, you will quickly run out of things to share in the future. So make a timeline and plan which things you want to post first and which ones should follow in a chronological order.

pp49

  1. Know your target market niche

There are plenty of people that join social media sites. However, you do not really want to reach to all of them. You need to focus on a group of people which are ‘potential customers’. Know who they are. If you do wedding cakes, then you should join and post on wedding sites.

  1. Check for a possibly existing account with a similar name

You do not want people to confuse you for another organization, group, or individual. You do not know how these other accounts are behaving and anything they do might have implications on your company’s image. If you found out that there are already existing accounts with a similar name or a mockingly similar name, you can go to checkusernames.com to help you come up with an alternative.

  1. Know how to lure in the people in your target market niche

Do you already have a clear vision of who your target market niche is, that is your potential customer? The next thing you need to figure out is how you can lure them in. You need to make a research on the things that interest them. For example, if your products are birthday cakes, then your target market niche are mothers, then perhaps some content with pictures of different Disney character cakes will lure them in.

  1. Use high quality graphics and Photoshop edited photos

People are attracted to visually appealing cakes. Sometimes, it is not the content but the appearance. What really draws potential customers to your social media profile is the look of it. You should make sure your Facebook business page looks more attractive by using high quality pictures, photographs, and images of your cakes.

  1. Make sure that you have the resources to regularly maintain a social media account

Yes, it is free to sign up to Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter. You should have the time to post regularly. It will serve you no good if you don’t post consistently. And if you need to advertise, you will probably need to pay these social media sites. Make sure that you have a budget for it.

  1. Check to see if having a social media account will really be of help to your company or if it will just be a liability

There are a lot benefits in having a social media account for your company. But there are also dangers. You need to analyze if you can take these risks head on.

Is it possible to make money selling cakes?

The Simple answer is YES. It is possible for you to start earning thousands of Naira in monthly revenue selling cakes.

Dear Caker,

Think about this.

When you first started your cake business, what did you think it would be like?

  • making money from baking cakes all day long

  • I will be able to quit my 9-5 job;

  • I don’t have to be waking up early each morning, going through traffic and being in a job that I hate;

  • I will finally be able to spend more time with my children;

  • I can work from home;

  • I will be financially independent;

  • I don’t have to depend on my spouse or relations for money;

  • I can finally contribute financially to the household.

But once you made my decision, you soon realized that this cake business thing is a lot harder than you thought. It’s not a small thing at all.

You started dealing with such things like:

  • Where are these customers?

  • I am not making any money

  • Why do I people don’t like paying for my cakes?

  • How do I price my cakes?

  • Ingredients are expensive so how and when should i increase my price?
  • How come Iyabo cake business is doing much better than me and i started before her?

  • Why am I not making any profit?

In fact you are just tired and fed up and feel like giving up and maybe going to find a job. At least i will be getting a salary each month.

But you know deep down that is not what you want really.

Let me tell you a true story:

When became a single mum, i know i had to make serious changes in my life. Even though I had a fairly good job, I realized that my humble salary was not enough to take care of me and my children needs.

I had always had a passion for baking, so I decided to start selling cakes. My friends for a long time used to tell me that I should go into business selling cakes but I lacked the confidence to do it. When my children demands increased, it dawned on me that I needed a side hustle to supplement my income. I thought it would be a breeze selling cakes to the public. How wrong I was. I really struggled to make any sales. Even my friends hardly patronized me.

I knew my cakes were good and of good quality, but still people were not buying. I felt like giving up and didn’t know how to market my cakes to make enough sales where I would be able to make serious money to enable me quit my 9-5 job and have more time to spend with my kids.

I knew I needed a change, so I spent many a sleepless nights learning how to market my cake business to the right target .I experimented on different strategies and applied it to my business and knew what gave me optimum results and what didn’t.

Almost a month later, I started getting results. My fellowship and orders started increasing steadily. I even had to enlist the help of some of my family members to help me with my orders. I  get hits on my website- Three Sisters Cake & Pie Company from other countries. I was also getting a lot of inquiries from my subscribers to give them advice on running a cake business. In fact I was becoming quite an expert in my field. And the best part in all of this is that I now have a steady stream of income coming in each month.

Finding your Niche for your Cake Business

To help you I have listed different Cake Niches and then sub divided it further to more specialist areas:

This will instantly help you market your business more effectively speak your customer’s language, you know the particular product you are selling, and you know a defined target customer.

Let me give you instances of two bakers’, and try and spot the difference. And see which one appeals to you more?

Clara’s Cakes For All – This baker creates cakes for everyone, for all types of occasions, birthdays, christenings, baby showers, weddings, retirements, charity events and much more. She does it, Clars wants to attract every type of person, but there is only one of her. She works all hours, takes last minute orders, hardly makes a profit, has no business style and is so stressed.

Vs.

Sweetie’s Cakes for Big Birthdays – This baker creates novelty cakes exclusively for big birthday celebrations.  Sweetie is focused; she understands the type of cakes she likes to make, so she can charge a premium sum.

If you want a wedding cake, she will turn you down and recommend you to another cake maker.

Sweetie books cakes into her diary months and even years in advance. She turns a healthy profit and her future’s looking bright.
