This Is Why Your Cake Business Is Failing (and what you can do about it)

It’s quite disheartening when your cake business is slow, isn’t it? We start to feel like a failure, like this business was a bad idea, like the competition is taking away all the customers away from us.

Believe me I understand how you feel. There are many a times when i ask myself if i made the right decision in resigning from my job and venturing into this wonderful world of cakes.

There would be weeks when i didn’t have a single order and when i do i will be doubting my cake skills wondering if i am able to create the cake the customer wants.

But one thing i will tell you for free. It will get better, so please do not give up.

But you need to do some work and look at your business if you want to improve your sales.

The first thing you do is to look at your past track record. You either got a few or plenty of orders in the past, If you used to get plenty orders, what did you do? You need to trace your patterns.

However, you need to realize that what worked so well in the past may not work as well now because:

1) There are more bakers out there doing what we do on those same platforms,

 2) It’s much harder to reach your potential customers through Facebook unless you use paid Ad’s, and

3) You are still doing the same old thing, even though the cake industry have changed significantly.

If your orders are few and far between means that you may have not done much in the way of marketing your business. Like what platforms do you use to market your cakes or to tell people about your cakes?

pp66

So if you are suffering from low sales, you need to as yourself  3 important questions:

  1. How can i do to stand out from the competition: What makes your cake business stand out from the other bakers out there?
  2. What can you do to get new customers: How would someone who wants the type and the taste of your cakes you offer even know you exist in the first place? How do these people find you?
  3. How do you keep your current customers: You need to think how to remind your customers that you are always there for them, how can you always remind them to always remember you when they need a cake. Think back, do you get repeat custom, or do people order from you and then forget about you because they never hear from you again?

Once you’ve thought and answered these questions. It’s time to get it out there and MARKET, MARKET, MARKET that cake business of yours.

You have to realise that as your business grows and changes, your marketing should be growing and changing too  because the business of marketing is constantly evolving.

Yes, we love to make Cake but forget that we need to sell it in order to sustain a profitable and successful business, and although you may think that marketing makes you look a bit desperate, it doesn’t have to be that way!

THINK OF MARKETING AS A MEANS FOR YOU TO GET YOUR BUSINESS OUT THERE TO THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER

Do You Have A Business Or An Expensive Hobby?

This is something many home based cake business owners struggle with, and I will admit have struggled with this in the past.

Treating your business like an expensive hobby instead of a business. You might be doing this right now but you might not know it.

So, in this blogpost I am going to help you recognise whether you are actually running a business or in fact just have a very expensive hobby.

If anything I say below rings true, then you may just be running a hobby rather than a fully-fledged business, then please go and register for my Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business Masterclass where you will be taken through the process to make sure you move away from hobby cake business owner and move into the role of a successful cake businesswoman.

  1. You have not even registered your company

One of the first steps in setting up your business is to register it at the Corporate Affairs Commission.  Structuring your business properly from the start sets the right tone for not only yourself but for your potential customers as well.

You will appear more trustworthy and professional if you have a duly registered company. How can you expect your potential customers seriously if you too don’t take yourself seriously?

  1. You do not know how to price your cakes

I know pricing can be a real struggle for cake business owners. Most times we do not know how much we should charge for our cakes and in the end we allow ourselves to be under-priced.

People value what they pay for. If a person values what you are doing, then you should charge appropriately otherwise they will value you less and you will be known as the cheap cake lady.

You are in business to make money, so you need to charge right for your time, skill and effort you put in in crating that masterpiece of a cake.

If pricing is a struggle for you then register for my Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business Masterclass and all your pricing woes will be out to bed.

pp67

  1. You don’t know how much money you make from my business.

If you don’t know how much money you are making then you also don’t know if, or when your business is making a profit or loss.

This is a clear sign your business is an expensive hobby.

The foundation of any business is in good record keeping and keeping track of your expenses. You need to have bookkeeping and accounting systems in place. This will help you monitor the finances of your business.

If you cannot tell how much you made and how much you spent in previous months, then it means you’re treating it like an expensive hobby.

So, if this is you then please, please watch my Training on Bookkeeping Systems you should have in your cake business here and here and put an end to it now with my simple actionable tactics.

  1. You know nothing about marketing

Customers do not fall from the sky. You have to go out there to get them and the only way you can get customers is by marketing.

Marketing your business is a must. There are various marketing strategies you can employ such as social media marketing, having a blog, sending out email or sms newsletters. You need to be doing some sort of marketing on a consistent basis every day, if not; your business will find it hard to survive.

If you are unsure about marketing, then register for Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business Masterclass which has an  entire Module dedicated to Marketing.

Stop waiting for people to find you and go out and go get them

  1. You do not keep track of your time

Do you how long it takes you to bake and decorate a cake from start to finish? How long does it take for you to give a quote for a cake, answering emails, shopping for ingredients and so on? You need to keep track of your time. Because you need to be paid for your time. You need to earn a wage for the time you use for an order.

If you feel you are worth N500 an hour, then if you spend 5 hours shopping, baking and decorating a cake, that means you will have earned N2,500. So that amount should be added to the price of your cake.

If you don’t know where you are spending your time then you have no idea what you are actually getting paid.

ee23

6.    Your family and friends don’t take your business seriously

The energy that we give off about something reflects on those around us. If you are finding that your friends treat your business like a hobby, then it’s likely you are also speaking about it in that way as well.

What kind of language do you use when you speak about your cake business? How do you stand and how do you feel? All of these signals are emitted and interpreted by those around us.
If you are upset by a friend or maybe even family members  not taking your business seriously or they keep asking you for a free or a cheap cake, then this is a sign that you probably aren’t taking your business seriously.

  1. You do not have a website because you are still deciding what logo to use

If the reason you have not launched your website is because you are still deciding on what colours, or logo or theme to use, then you really are missing the point of being in business.

Yes it’s good to get those things right, but don’t spend time and a lot of money deciding on such trivial matters. You mind should be on how to get your business out there so that people will know you and you can start making money, how to add value and how to be different from the other cake businesses out there.

So that’s it.

I have struggled with all of these in the past, and many home based cake business owners do to. And this is something that I help my clients to deal with all of the time through my coaching programs and courses.

So, if any of these are true for you don’t worry. You are not alone.

The most important step is to become aware of and identify the issue, and if you have done this by reading to the end of this article, that is a huge step, well done.

The next step is to come over and register for my Pricing your cake right to build a money making cake business masterclass and I will give you some really actionable strategies that you can implement straight away to build a more profitable and lucrative cake business.

Here is why you haven’t achieved your dreams?

April is already upon us. We are already in the second quarter of the year.I’m really wondering how the last 3 months went.

We only just have 2 more Quarters in the year left. Soon we will be celebrating Christmas.

It is true that time waits for no one.

How are you getting on with achieving your goals?

I now realize that i really have to buck down and really work harder in getting to where I want to be.

Yes I have achieved some great things in the last few months, but i have not made the dramatic changes i wanted both in my life and in my business.

I am telling you this, because i want to reveal to you that i too struggle. I too procrastinate. I tell myself that there is still time and then wonder where the time went.

But one thing that has helped me is i always write my goals down. And not just write it down, but make a plan of how i will achieve it.

In this post I want to show you some questions you should ask yourself when you want to review your goals.

These questions will help you in assessing you progress, review your setbacks and make you strategise how to make things better.

  1. In Q1, what went well in your business?
  2. In Q1, what do you think did not go well in your business?
  3. What could you have done better to have achieved your goals?
  4. Are you on course to reaching your money goals for the year?
  5. What were your personal goals and are you any closer to achieving them?

So I am going to answer these questions for you, so that you too can do the same.

In Q1, what do you think went well in your business?

  • gained more subscribers in the Cake Business Owners Club
  • having a cake business tip show on Facebook Live every weekday
  • developed a new look for my website
  • did a few business training courses
  • seeing the Cake Business Club Whatsapp group grow
  • published an article in the Naija Top Baker Magazine
  • got more paid subscribers to my Courses
  • started a coaching program for clients

In Q1, what did not go well in your business?

  • did not make my monthly income goal
  • delayed in creating new courses
  • yet to establish a live workshop

What could you have done better to have achieved your goals?

  • to do more Masterclasses and Webinars
  • should quickly implement what i have learnt from the business training courses i have attended
  • to read more business books
  • less time watching TV programs ( I am addicted to ‘the real housewives of Atlanta’, ‘Empire’  ‘Love & hip hop’ and ‘Scandal’)

Are you on course to reaching your money goals for the year?

  • Yes I am. Have to be more aggressive and seek more avenues in promoting my products.

What were your personal goals and are you any closer to achieving them?

  • I am still on my weight loss journey. I have not lost much weight but i have not really been serious, but i am determined now and i intend to lose 20lbs.

So that’s me in a nutshell. I am exposing myself here and it is all for your benefit.

Just know you are not alone.

If you have not developed the habit of writing your goals, please start now.

I am going to make giant strides in the Cake Business Owners Club. I will be hosting a live Masterclass/ Webinar every week.

Also i am going to organise a live Cake Business Workshop this Quarter. So look out for announcement in the Cake Business Group page and our weekly newsletter.

The reason i am telling you this, is that now that I have revealed this. I will have no excuse, but to get on with it.

This Quarter I am determined.

NO MORE EXCUSES

I am also launching my Pricing Course this month.  It is finally ready and i have spent a lot time on the material. Just know that with this Course all your Pricing woes are over.So if you have not registered for it, here is the link to register .

On a daily basis I get a lot of email and messages from bakers, cake business owners or just hobby bakers asking me questions or just telling me about their experiences. I love receiving  emails from all of you. I appreciate your encouragement, feedback and i always try to help in any way i can for those who have questions.

I also get a lot of emails from women especially those who are contemplating starting a cake business, but month after month they are still at home doing nothing, depending on others for money .

And I ask why are you not earning money doing something. You say you like baking and want to start a cake business, so why haven’t you done anything about it?

And i keep hearing the same thing,

‘I don’t have money to start a cake business’;

I don’t have capital to buy equipment’;

‘when I get money I will start’;

‘ I don’t have money to register the business’;

‘There is no one to train me’;

‘I cannot afford to go for training’;

and so on.

My dear, all those things are just excuses,I do not mean to be harsh, but if you are saying those things now. You will see that this time next year you will still be in the same spot and have achieved nothing and still be saying I don’t have money to start.

Money is not an excuse.  You are the one making the excuses.

If you want something, you’ve got to be committed.

You don’t have money to start a cake business. To start a cake business you do not need thousands of Naira.

Just start.

With N5,000-N8,000 you can buy ingredients, bake some cupcakes, make your own cakes boxes ( You can go online to see how this is done) and sell batches of 4 or 6 cupcakes for like N2,000 or N3,000. Just sell them to family and friends. You will see in no time you would have recouped your investment and will have some money to either buy some equipment, pay someone to teach you or even to register your cake business.

It is hardly the case that someone will just give you N100,000 Gbam to start a business.

You have to start from somewhere.

You say you have no one to train you. Have you gone out and asked. I am sure an aunty of a friend of a friend can offer to train you for free. Have you gone online to seek for free training classes. A few weeks back the Lekki International Cake Fair held its annual event and some of the baking classes were free. Have you gone on YouTube and watched all the numerous baking training videos. Do you read baking blogs?

When i knew i wanted to start a cake business, i knew i needed training.  I really wanted to learn the  Wilton training. I think it was N20,000 at that time for the level 1 training. But i had no funds.

So i just went on Youtube and watched videos and practiced. With the little knowledge i had i started selling cupcakes to just people I knew at first. My cakes were far from perfect, but it still sold. Soon i was able to raise the N20,000 for the training.

And when i wanted to go for another training, I will just sell and sell.

t75.jpg

This were the cupcakes i sold

So don’t think you have to be one expert cake maker to start selling your cakes.

Just start.

I am a great believer in setting goals. Without Goals how will you know where you are going. if you want to achieve something. put it down in writing . And set a plan for how you will achieve it. And each day do something, no matter how little to achieve that goal.

Don’t let 2017 roll by and you are still waiting for one windfall to come  before you start your cake business or any business you want to do.

You can become financial independent.

Just start doing something with what you have.

Just Start.

Why I Think You Should Start A Cake Business

Starting your cake business can be a cake dream to some people.

I was so scared when I took the plunge to resign from my job and start my cake business. I had no business experience and I learnt a lot on the job. I made a LOT of mistakes. But you know what. I was happy. I was working from home, earning money, and most importantly I was spending time with my children.

So if need extra convincing to take that leap to starting your cake business, here are a few reason you should:

e5

You have a passion for cake

Do you spend a lot of time thinking about cake? Do you love all those baking shows on Food Network? Sometimes you can’t wait to close from work or  at the weekend to try out a new recipe. Do you bring cakes and cupcakes to your friends and colleagues at work? You may have even spent some time looking into what it would take to start a cake business but not sure where to start.

Then my dear, you are on the right track to having a cake business.

You have the passion, then go for it.  Life is too short to be spent regretting.

Stop making excuses, why are you working for another man’s or woman’s business, when you can be building your own?

If you have a job that you hate, where you spend half of the day in traffic, being with people you don’t like day after day, then you need to do something about that.

e4

Do it Afraid

Left to you, you can come up with 50 different ways why you don’t want to do this. It is because you are afraid. The uncertainty of the ‘What if.

What if i fail. What if no one buys my cakes, What if i am not good enough.

Instead replace that negative thinking with What if i am a success, What if i have so many orders that i have to turn some down, What if i make so much money that i can now buy that industrial oven

Do you know what is the No. 1 regret of the elderly?- Not doing something because they were afraid.

I spent years working as a lawyer in a job I had no passion for. I dreaded going to work each morning and being away from my children.

Yes we don’t know what the future holds. They are no really   safety nets. But you need to to take a step. Once you start, you will realise that it was silly hesitating.

So even though you are afraid. Do it Afraid.

You will be a Goal Crusher

People always say that when you want to achieve something you should write them down. So if you want to learn something or acquire a business skill, or want to start or grow your business, set it as a goal and crush it.

Once you realize you can accomplish this huge task of starting your own cake business  you will see all the other goals will be a breeze.

e3

You Will Become Ms. Cake Boss Lady

You will finally be your own boss, have your own hours, be able to dictate your hourly rate, plan your holidays and spend more time with family and friends.

Yes it is going to be handwork. Infact a lot of hard work but you will see that you will enjoy it so much that it will not be like work.

Once you know how to price right, market and promote your cakes, network, then you business will continue to grow to greater and greater heights.

Captivo Picture 106

You will become more smart

When I first started my cake business I had no idea how to run a business. I was like a headless chicken running around. I had no order book, i didn’t know how to track my orders, I didn’t know how to price my cakes and i will go to the supermarket nearly everyday to buy suppliers.I used to deliver cakes and wait ages for payment.

I was so fed up so I was forced to change. I needed to come up with a system. So I started makings lists, made order forms, had a diary , made note of costs of ingredients, noted the time it took to make and decorate a cake, and learnt how to charge appropriately and made sure that the customer paid me at least a deposit before i started making the cake.

So i got smarter, by putting systems in place i was able to run my business more efficiently and organised.

e6

You will become an avid learner

When you start your cake business you will start to see that you don’t know a lot. So its good to make a list of skills you don’t know and make an effort to learn them.

And once you get the hang of learning, you will want to learn more and more. Both from paid and free resources like… YouTube, Google and Facebook.

You can find the answer to almost any question on the Internet, so Instead of sitting around feeling defeated and frustrated because you don’t know how to do something, just go to the internet to find out the answers or find someone who can teach you.

e7

P.S. So those are my reasons?  What are your own  reasons to start a cake business? Let me know  in the comments.

Finding your Niche for your Cake Business

What is a niche? A Niche denotes or relates to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.

So why is finding a niche so important for your cake business?

Everyone loves cakes and that helps make it a growing market, which is good, but when you are just starting out in this business, this can be a problem.

So in order to make your cake business known in a rather crowded market, you need to find your niche.

Discovering your niche will help you set yourself apart from the competition.  This enables you have a clear area to focus on, to set a target customer base, plus it will help your customers know what you sell, which will help maximise your profits.

You might think that your customers are everyone. But if you think everyone is your customer, you are wrong. Because if you are selling to everyone, you are actually not selling to anyone.

But what niche should you choose, well that is up to you and what is your passion.

To help you I have listed different Cake Niches and then sub divided it further to more specialist areas:

 Image result for Fondant/Sugarpaste Modelling

  • Fondant/Sugarpaste Modelling
    • Wedding cake toppers
    • Toppers for birthday cakes
    • Character toppers
    • Fondant Flowers
    • Fondant Figurines

Green Yellow White and Purple Floral 2 Layered Cake

  • Wedding Cakes
    • Buttercream tiered wedding cakes
    • Naked wedding cakes
    • Square wedding cakes
    • Weddings with sugar roses or real flowers
    • Trendy wedding cakes

Happy Birthday Cake

  • Birthday Cakes
    • Baby birthday cakes
    • Baby Shower cakes
    • Cartoon birthday cakes
    • Glamorous birthday cakes
    • Novelty birthday cakes
    • Birthday cakes for men/women/boys/girls

Free stock photo of chocolate, sweets, cupcakes

  • Cupcakes
    • Full sized cupcakes
    • Mini cupcakes
    • Printed cupcakes
    • Corporate cupcakes

And the list goes on and on.

Once you have discovered your niche you will find life becomes a little easier. Instead of catering for everyone you can target one particular segment. This will instantly help you market your business more effectively speak your customer’s language, you know the particular product you are selling, and you know a defined target customer.

Let me give you instances of two bakers’, and try and spot the difference. And see which one appeals to you more?

Clara’s Cakes For All – This baker creates cakes for everyone, for all types of occasions, birthdays, christenings, baby showers, weddings, retirements, charity events and much more. She does it, Clars wants to attract every type of person, but there is only one of her. She works all hours, takes last minute orders, hardly makes a profit, has no business style and is so stressed.

Vs.

Sweetie’s Cakes for Big Birthdays – This baker creates novelty cakes exclusively for big birthday celebrations.  Sweetie is focused; she understands the type of cakes she likes to make, so she can charge a premium sum.

If you want a wedding cake, she will turn you down and recommend you to another cake maker.

Sweetie books cakes into her diary months and even years in advance. She turns a healthy profit and her future’s looking bright.

In short finding your niche will help your business have focus, you will be able to charge a premium and ultimately it will help you climb the ladder of success.  So get out there and find your niche!

So what’s your niche? Have you found it yet? Comment below. Will love to hear from you.

Happy Caking.

How to achieve your Baking Goals in 2017

2017 is just a few days away.

So what are your plans for the New Year, especially your cake business goals.

You may be thinking what does baking have to do with goals?
Well let me tell you,  a lot.

Baking can help you with your goals and I will show you how.

I’m going to break down the process of baking a cake, and how you can apply that to your goals.

So lets get baking with goals.

c41

Step 1 – Decisions

How can you bake a cake if you don’t know what cake you want to bake.

There are so many different cakes you can make. Such as:

  • Vanilla
  • Chocolate
  • Redvelvet
  • Cheesecake
  • Fat Free

And so on.

It’s important you are clear about what type of cake you want to bake.

Why? Because the cake you bake will determine the ingredients that you need.

Goal:

Make your goal(s) clear and precise.  This will help you get to your desired results.

 c37

Step 2 – Get all your Ingredients

You need to make sure you have all the necessary ingredients.

You cannot skip this step.  You’d be surprised at how many times I have gone to make a cake assuming I had the ingredients only to discover I’ve run out of baking powder.

When you know what is in your cupboard or store, you then know what you need to buy at the supermarket.

Once you have all your ingredients, then you can start baking.

Goal:

Get all the information you need to make your goal achievable and attainable.

Step 3 – Follow the recipe

How do recipes come about? Recipes are the result of trial and error.  Someone has gone to the effort to refine and experiment the recipe so you end up with a great cake,

So it’s vital that you read the recipe before you start baking.

Once you understand the recipe, start your creation. But trust in the recipe.

Goal:

Follow the steps of your plan to get to your desired goal.

Step 5 – Rest

The timer has gone off, and now your cake is ready to come out of the oven.

But it’s still too hot to eat, so you need to allow it rest and cool down.

Goal:

Take a moment to reflect on your journey.

Step 6 – Icing on the cake

Once the cake has cooled down, it’s time to ice it, if you want.

Goal:

You may be completely satisfied with your goal and don’t need the ‘extra’s. But if you do want the icing on the cake then of course you’ll have to work for that too.

The icing doesn’t make the cake any less than what it is.  It’s still a cake, just dressed up.
