Stop Planning, Start Doing, and Achieve More in Your Cake Business

Do you have some cake business aspirations that are beyond your current capabilities? It’s natural to dream of things that you want to do someday, but currently can’t. However, to realize your dreams, at some point you must stop planning and start taking action.

While planning is an important part of bringing your dreams to life, avoid dedicating more time to the mental preparation than to action. If you spend your entire life planning for what you will do in the future, then when will you actually start living?

Before I started my cake business wanted everything to be perfect, I wanted the perfect website, perfect pictures, perfect business plan, perfect economy, perfect everything. I soon realized that I was spending all my time planning instead of doing. If I was waiting for the perfect time to start, I am sure I will still be waiting today.

Even when I started going live on Facebook, I kept on postponing and posting, saying I will start when I have money to buy the perfect lighting equipment, good microphone and so on. Until I just decided one day to stop waiting and do it. It was perfect but it was a start. And the cake business show has been going from strength to strength. And have now expanded to YouTube and I still haven’t bought my perfect lighting equipment.

If you find yourself always postponing your activities because you feel your plans are yet not finalized or you are afraid, you need to stop planning and start taking action right away. You need to do something and stop worrying about perfection.

Here are a few important steps to help you pave the way:

Try these strategies to help jump start your goal-achieving actions:

  1. Actions speak louder than words

You’ve probably heard this statement before, but have you really considered the meaning? Taking action and achieving are more powerful than simply planning for the future. Start taking steps in the right direction while planning, instead of waiting for every detail of your plan to be complete.

  • Keep in mind that you can accomplish your goals as long as you’re moving in a forward direction. It may take some time, depending on how large your goal is, but moving forward will get you where you want to be. Taking action, regardless of how small, moves you forward.

For instance you want to create a website for your business but you are waiting to get enough money to hire a web developer. Why don’t you do it yourself. I created my cake website all by myself in the course of a 2 week Christmas break from my 9-5 job at that time. Just say each day you will do something like Day 1, open the platform and select a template, Day 2, select cake pictures, day 3- post cake pictures on site, and so on. Just dedicating a time each day to do something, you will see at the end of a period of time, you will be done, feel fulfilled and move on to the next task or goal.

  1. Mind Your Language

Which is more effective, “I am going to start my cake business,” or “I am starting my cake business”? How about the difference between “I am planning on going to a baking school,” and “I am currently attending a baking school”? The differences in these statements may have a profound impact on whether you’re actually going somewhere, or just thinking about it.

  • Try this: Rather than saying “I am going to start my cake business” (which is something you could say for years without doing anything!), take action to start your cake business.
  1. Break goals into smaller bites

Rather than creating a lengthy plan that will take several years to fully realize, why not break your goals into smaller pieces that you can achieve one at a time? Setting goals too far into the future can hamper your ability to take small steps in the right direction now.

  • For example, say you want to lose 100 pounds. Try setting goals to lose 1% of your body weight per week until you reach your final goal. Achieving several weight loss goals over a period of time will help keep you motivated rather than struggling endlessly for that one far-off goal.
  • Perhaps you want to achieve something over a period of time, such as making N500,000 this year from cake sales. In this case, you can break your goals into weeks, months or quarters. For you to make N500,000 in sales, you need to make about N40,000 in sales in each. This amount is achievable and realistic then you can now focus on marketing to those customers to achieve your monthly target. This will help you feel a sense of success with your progress as you work toward the larger goal of making N500,000.

Having  your plans broken down to small actionable steps that you can work on a day-to-day or monthly basis will help measure your progress and also help you to stop procrastinating.

Don’t just plan to achieve a goal. Plan to try new things as well. This will help you overcome the fear of failure.

  1. Be Accountable

Make yourself accountable to somebody you respect. If you have a mentor in your life, talk to your mentor and share your plans with him/her. Accountability is a great motivator. For instance, you plan to quit your 9-5 to concentrate on your cake business, tell a friend to keep you accountable so you do it when you will say you will do it.

In fact I give thanks to a friend who made sure I stuck to the date I decided to resign from my job. I kept on postponing and postponing until one day she said give me a definite date that you will hand in you resignation letter and true to form on that date she called me and ask me if I had done it. That pushed me to take action. If I had not told her I would have just been saying later, later.

  1. Healthy competition is good

Healthy competition is a great way to stop planning and start doing. Have a competitive spirit. Compete with somebody who is doing better than you in your domain. If a fellow baker is posting 2 times a day, try and post something 3 times.

se9

  1. Believe in yourself

Lastly believe in yourself. Self-confidence is the key element in achieving anything.

Sometimes you may feel challenged to build the momentum you need to achieve goals and get where you want to be in life. Raise your standards and expect action from yourself instead of just thoughts and words.

If you’re struggling to move from planning to actual accomplishments, try breaking your goals into smaller pieces. You’ll be amazed at how motivational a little success can be!

So now what things are you going to take action on now. Will love to hear from you.

I have been running my own successful home based cake business for some years now. I have also been teaching bakers through my online courses who are struggling with low sales, with strategies on how to market, and price their cakes for profit.

In addition I am also run a Facebook Group where I coach, offer support and help bakers in their businesses.

I have helped over 50 bakers through my online course A comprehensive guide to starting your cake business in 30 days’ with much needed information on how to start a cake business in Nigeria. I also teach close to 4000 cake enthusiasts through my Facebook Group how to run a money making cake business.

I have been featured in ‘Naija Top Baker’ magazine, one of Nigeria’s foremost cake magazines and also been a Guest Speaker at the Bakery World Convention.

If you are struggling with getting customers for their cakes, I can help you solve this problem by showing you how to market, sell, price, plan, structure and brand your business so you are constantly selling to the right people who want your cakes.

Your Customers Are Out There

However good your cakes are, the simple truth is that no one will buy it if they don’t know you. And you can’t persuade anyone that they want or need your cakes unless you can clearly understand what it is your customers want and where you can market to them.

Knowing and understanding customer needs is at the centre of every successful business. Once you have this knowledge, you can use it to persuade potential and existing customers to buy your cakes.

Here are 5 ways to help you get more customers:

  1. Word Of Mouth Actually Works!

This I think is the oldest form of marketing and advertising used today. Word-of-mouth remains one of the most trusted methods in the world today because it is coming from someone you know, like and trust.

When a customer is happy and satisfied with a product or a service, it’s natural that they will share, recommend and tell their friends or people within their circle.

So you can view a satisfied customer as a means of free advertising and promotion for your business.

Word-of-mouth is so effective and powerful tool. But how can you encourage your customers to promote your business for you and use it for your advantage.

One thing you can do is to entice or encourage your customers or give them a reason to advertise your business. You can tell your customers that if they refer your business to another and that referral leads to an order, that customer will get a free box of cupcakes or get a discount on their next order.

2.      Treat Your Customers Right

If you treat your customer’s right, they will tell people about their experience. Genuinely talk to your customers. If they have a complaint or an issue, don’t just give them standard response .Genuinely talk with your customer, address your customers by name. Help to solve their problems. Ask them about the event that are having, the colour scheme, the number of invitees. As the customer reveal more details, you never know, they may be another money making transaction down the line.

people-2586896__340

3.      Offer Discounts and Special Offers

Offering discounts and special offers are also a powerful way to publicise your brand. To get more customers in your business, you can offer discounts and special offers to entice your customers. You can reach thousands of potential customers this way.

People love a deal. It gives them an opportunity to save money and enjoy something for less money.

In fact, discounts and offers usually sway customers to buy more of a product or service because that product may not be at that price next time.

An example is that on your social media pages, you can advertise deals such as buy a dozen cupcakes and get a box of 4 free.

4.      Expand your network

You should constantly be looking for new customers. You can rely on your existing network such as word of mouth to expand your customer base, but you may eventually run out of new customers. When you find yourself in this situation, you need to look to expanding your network.

You can make wonderful cakes, but if you do not have new contacts that want to order from you, your business will remain stagnant.

How do you go about growing your network? Attend networking events, join organizations, form partnerships, collaborate with other business partners, and watch your network grow.

  1. Be On Social Media

Many people now depend on the internet for information nowadays. People watch more of YouTube than they do television.

There are several social media platforms to choose. Social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, instagram. Snapchat, YouTube  are some of the top places where your potential customers hang out and it makes perfect sense that your business presence be felt on most of them.

So believe me, your customers are out there. You only have to look for them and persuade them to come to your business. So if you want to expand your customer base, just follow the tips above and enjoy getting booked out.

Have you tried any of these methods? How did it work for you? Will love to hear from you. Just comment below.

Business Lessons From My Holiday At Disney World

For the past few weeks I have been on vacation. Went to London and Florida where I treated the kids to a few days in Walt Disney World.

Disney World has been described as the happiest place on earth and I thank God he has given me the means and opportunity to take my children as I know they will cherish these memories forever.

Going to Disneyworld is not cheap. From flights, to hotels and park tickets. It can cost a small fortune. And how was I able to afford this? It is from exactly what I am doing now. My business and not giving up on my dreams.

When we got to the themeparks I was wooed by the crowd. On that day alone, it was estimated that 60,000 people were visiting the Disney parks and it is not just tourists that visit the parks, the Florida residents themselves treat it as an ultimate vacation destination.

Almost everyone has heard of Disney, from their films, merchandise, characters, clothes, their resorts and parks. How did Disney become a household name?  Almost year round, people all over the world troop, plan and aspire to go to Disneyworld or Disneyland.

Disney world has been described as the happiest place on earth and I thank God he has given me the means and opportunity to take my children as I know they will cherish these memories forever.

While I was there enjoying my trip to the happiest place on earth I could not help myself observing business ideas which one can apply to one’s business. I’ll also offer some insight into how you can take these ideas and apply them to your business to see more growth in your business.

disney 1

1. Treat Your Customers Right

When you go to any Disney theme park, you are met with happy staff that are very much happy to help. Even if they are passing by, they will ask if you need any assistance. I remember one occasion in Epcot Centre I was taking a picture of my kids and my mum. Of course i too wanted to be in the picture so me and my mum took turns taking the pictures. A staff walking by asked to take our picture together. We didn’t even need to ask, she observed a problem and offered a solution.

To be successful in business you need to treat your customer right, from the moment they make an enquiry, to the moment you deliver including after sales service. Treat any complaints professionally. Don’t take your frustration out on the customer. Follow up, talk to them. Find out their needs and problems and try to offer solutions.

disney4.jpg

2. Incorporate Different Pricing Tiers

If you’ve ever planned a trip to Disneyland, you know that the different pricing options can be a bit overwhelming.

There are different pricing packages, you can buy tickets to all the Disney parks or just a single park or buy tickets allowing you to visit multiple parks in a single day. There are even other packages where it includes hotel stays, princess makeovers and more.

So why does it have different pricing systems.

Because different people want different things, so it’s created a pricing structure to suit the pocket of different people so at least everyone  can experience the magic that is Disney whatever your pocket.

Does your business offer multiple pricing packages?

How do you do that?

Simply by offering 3 alternatives for the client.

A budget option, midrange and expensive option.

So you will be offering 3 alternatives to the inquiry, or example:

  1. Box of 12 cupcakes with butter cream icing is N5000.
  2. Small 8 inch round buttercream cake is N8,000.
  3. Fondant covered, 1 tier, 8 inch round cake is N15,000

Now with that, the customer feels they have options or a choice. To leave them when they say ‘Ah no that is really expensive’’ leaves them with no options at all.

But by spending an extra 1-2 minutes teaching and giving 3 alternatives, the customer is back in charge with now making a more informed choice, within their budget.

3. Be Innovative

The Disney I visited as a child is not really the same when I visited with my kids. It is much better. They now offer fast track at certain times so you can skip the lines and simply go on the ride. You can check how long you’ll have to wait to go on a ride and so on. There are constantly looking for ways to improve their brand, business and customer satisfaction.

In your business you should continually be looking for things to make your customer experience better.  Get feedback from your customers on how you can improve their experience, then find innovative ways to solve their problem.

And lastly.

disney 3

4.     Never Give Up

Did you know that Walt Disney did not just become a success.  He started many companies that failed. Instead of giving in or giving up, Mr Walt Disney never gave up.

Want A Successful Cake Business? Do Not Make These Mistakes!

During my years as a cake business coach, I observed some common mistakes made by cake business owners. It’s one thing to be a skilled Baker, but it’s something quite different to be the owner of a successful Cake business.

Yes, making mistakes is part of life and it’s only by learning from those mistakes that we become better business owners, but knowing the common mistakes to avoid will make you more successful in the long run.
I remember when I first started and i baked a lovely 12 inch cake covered with buttercream roses. it took days to make and because i didn’t know how to price  properly, the customer only paid a very small amount and i was so angry with yourself.
Here are a few of the most common mistakes you should try to avoid as a Cake Business owner:

#1: Not Knowing You Are A Legal Business Owner

Most of us started like this- you make a cake for a few friends and they like it, and tell you to go into business. So you give it a try, make a cake for someone and suddenly you’re in business.

You have conducted your first business transaction. So you are no longer a hobby baker. The thing you have to realize is that the moment you charge for a cake, you’ve moved from hobby to professional.

In most cases, selling your cakes means you’re already a legally registered business. Once you start collecting money for your cakes. The rules become different, and you need to think about things in a different way  – even if your cakes are not perfect or you only charged a few Naira for your cakes.
You have to conduct yourself more professionally, you need to have invoices, a dedicated bank account, email address, invoices and receipts, etc.

cake 20

#2: Working For Free

You need to charge adequately for your time and effort. Even if you are new in the cake business, my advice is to always know what your cakes are worth, and refuse to negotiate below a certain price.

Stop making cakes for free( I know it is usually family and friends that are guilty of this). You are a skilled professional so you should be paid a such. Not only should your costs be covered but also you should be making profit for every cake you sell.
If someone says you should bake a cake for free on the promise of future orders, Don’t do it. If it is for charity, you can decide to do it (maybe twice a year) but for anyone else, they should pay. Will they go to a doctor and tell them to treat them for free? You are providing a service, so you should be paid for the service you are rendering.

#3: Waiting For Customers To Just Appear

Customers do not just fall from the sky. You need to market and get on social media to advertise your cake business. Word of mouth is good and helps bring in customers, but you can’t always rely on that.
The only way you can get business is to market, market, market. Get your business cards and flyers out and go and distribute it to where your customers are. Do Facebook Ads, be active on social media, go to events and tell people about your business.
If you are just home waiting, you will not get customers. You need to go out there and market.
cake 25

#4: Not Keeping Track Of Your Expenses

Now that you are in business, you should know the cost of being in business. Not only the cost of ingredients, but other things like your stationary, fuel and even phone credit. All these things should be accounted for so you can add them to the cost of your cake.
You are not working for free or using your own money to stay in business.
Every expense should be accounted for and you have to keep track of such monies so at the end of the day you will know if you are making a profit or loss. So having a separate business account and bookkeeping books are essential for your business.

#5: Living In A Cake Fantasy

Running a professional cake business, is not so easy. Many feel you will become a millionaire overnight just by baking cakes.
That is far from the truth.

The reality is that the cake baking and decorating plays a small part.
Not only will you be baking, but you will be doing marketing, social media, customer service, selling, ordering supplies, negotiating with customers and so on. Those business-related tasks are required in running your business so don’t ignore them.

#6: Worrying About The Competition

As a cake business owner, you need to know your competition, like what they charge and what type of cakes they sell. Knowing this is information is vital because it helps you make decisions on how you can improve so that you can stand out from the crowd.

However, if you’re spending the time comparing yourself to the competition and complaining about other bakers is a complete waste of your time.
Spend that time improving your customer service, marketing your business, developing new products, and getting feedback from  new and existing customers.

cake 24

#7: Not Knowing How To Set Prices

You should not just pull prices from the air. It is a calculated process.

It’s important to cost properly. The main reasons why costing properly is very important,

  1. is because if you do it well, you will make a profit in your business;
  2. You will be able to know where to reduce your costs and expenses;
  3. You will know how to give discounts and offers without making a loss.

When pricing your cakes, you should note the cost of ingredients, your profit, your labour, utility and sundry costs.

To know more about pricing register for the Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business.
cake 26

#8: Failing To Have A Business Plan

I know! I know! this can be a hassle, but it is worth doing. When you’ve started your new cake business try to take a break and write a business plan.  Know this can be quite boring especially when you not only have to bake, but market, sell and so on.
However, without a plan, you are unlikely to achieve long-term success. A business plan helps you plan your goals and tracks your progress. It provides a continuous frame of reference for your cake business, defining your goals, and making you accountable. So it is worth having one.

So really the Baking is the easy part and it becomes more difficult when you have to deal with the business part. But when you avoid the mistakes we discussed above, you will be on your way to having a successful business.

‘Remember you’re A Cake Business Owner, not just a Baker

What mistakes have you made while being a business owner and have you learnt what went wrong. Will love to hear about your experiences.

5 Ways To Keep Your Customers Coming Back For Your Cakes

After you have made a sale, don’t just move on to the next potential customers. A customer just parted with their money for one of your cakes. So it is a good idea to keep them as a customer for life.

You should find ways to increase sales to your existing customers. It will be a lot cheaper than looking for new ones. Those existing customers have already tasted and paid for your cakes, so the hard work is already done.

Here are a few promotional ideas so that you do not lose customers and they keep on coming back for more of your awesome cakes.

1. Do not forget your customer

You should devote some time after a sale to reconnect with your customers. You can send them an email asking them if they enjoyed the cake they ordered. This is an opportunity for you to get feedback and also get a great testimonial which you can use for your social media or website by the way.

You could send them a voucher where they will get a discount for their next order, or you could simply send them monthly newsletters so that you will be on their mind often.

mo6

2. Remember Things About Your Customer

Surprise your customers by remembering important details about them when you contact them. You do not need to know real personal details about your customers, it can be simple things like remembering their name, or their birthday or their spouse birthday or anniversary.

Once you have this information, you can contact them before the event and ask them if you can do the cake for their husband, or child’s birthday. It will be a surprise for them that you remembered and will take off the hassle of you dealing with last minute orders.

3. Make it Easy for customers to Contact you

If you have a website, make sure there is an area on all the pages of how hey can reach you, whether it is your phone number, or email or if you want them to order online. Do not make it difficult or hard for customers to know how to reach you.

If it is a Facebook Page you have, make sure at the top of that page are all the details of how customers can make there order. The same goes for your Instagram Page. Also, always respond in a very timely manner all your emails, social media enquirers or comments or missed calls. If you don’t you will be losing that customer.

mo5

4. Say Thank You

A simple thank you goes a long way. Show appreciation for your customers. You can express your gratitude by emailing your customers after a sale with a Thank you message.

You can even do more like sending them a discount voucher or tell them to recommend you business to their friends and if that friend makes an order they will receive a free box of cupcakes.

5. Communicate

Want your customers coming back?Ask them. Talk to your customers. You can send out feedback forms or surveys. This will give you a lot of information of how you can improve your business. And once you have that information, implement it.

Have more ideas on how to keep your customers coming back? Will love to hear them. Just comment below.

Wondering How To Price Your Cakes? Let Me Show You How

I decided to repost this article that i posted some time back on how to price your cakes. You have to realize that once you get your pricing sorted you can now move and pay attention to other important aspects of your cake business like marketing.

Another reason why you need to price and cost properly is that you will determine the profit your business makes and you can now know where to reduce costs and when you can give discounts without you losing money

Here are the basics so you can make a start on pricing your cakes for profit.

1: Labour costs

Step 1 is labour, often the undercharged part of the cake pricing formula. However, when you know you are being paid a decent salary then you making a cake becomes more enjoyable.

But if you aren’t getting any good wage, then it can be like a chore or a job and you will feel demotivated. You do not want to work for nothing.

To help you gain a control on the labour aspect, make a note of what you honestly want your hourly rate to be. This can be anywhere from N500 – N5,000 an hour. It all depends on you, your skill level, years of experience.

If you are just starting out, you may charge N400- N1,000 an hour, When you start getting better in your skill level, you can increase your hourly rate to maybe N1,500 or N3,000 an hour.

So now that you know your hourly rate. Next start to monitor how long each type of cake takes to create. Record everything, from the initial enquiry, shopping to the mixing, baking, cooling, cleaning, decorating, delivery, set up, etc.

So if it takes you 3 hours to do a vanilla cake and your hourly rate is N1,000 an hour, then your labour wage/salary is N3,000.

Do this for every cake you do and make a note of it, then you will have a record of what to charge for the cakes you sell.

2: Cost of Ingredients

I know this can be quite time consuming part.  If you are making cupcakes or small individual cakes it is important to know the price of one so make sure you calculate every batch.

So when you are shopping for ingredients, take note how much the eggs, flour, butter, margarine, etc costs.

3: Sundry Costs or Extra Costs

Similar to step 3 this is fairly simple to cost, and again. Sundry costs, are things like cakeboards, boxes, ribbons, dowels, etc

ri75

4: Utility Costs

I know calculating Utility costs are a little trickier to calculate as you have to look at your bills or think of an estimate or figure to cover your utility.

But how many of us have time for this, again if this is too much trouble, just come up with an estimate amount.

5: Profit

The profit is money that you can invest back into your business. So that you can afford that shop you want, buy new cake equipment, create a website, buy flyers, generally market your business, and outsource your bookkeeping, admin, etc.

How much profit you add to your cake price is your choice. But aim for at least somewhere between 15% – 60% profit.

ee23

REGISTER FOR THE MASTERCLASS HERE

6: The Total Price

The final step is calculating steps 1 – 6

(Labour + Cost of Ingredients + Sundry Costs + Utility

Costs) x Profit = Total Cake Price

Practical Example,

Bose of Bose Cakes and Bakes has an order for a 10 inch fondant vanilla birthday cake with small piping detail and a few fondant roses on an iced cake board and packaged in a box.

Bose starts calculating:

Labour – N1,000 x 5 hours = N5000

 Ingredients Costs = N2000

Sundry Costs = N600

Utility Costs = N450

Profit x 30%

The Formula (N5000+ N2000+ N600+ N450) x 30% = N10,465

Therefore, the total price Bose will quote to the customer is N10,465.

So this is a simple method I recommend you use to price your cakes. Once you have mastered this Formula, you can change and adapt it from time to time.

Will love to hear from you. How do you currently price your cakes? How has it worked for you s far? Comment below please.

…..the customer requests a quote and then they disappear.

…. You spend a long time with the customer talking about the cakes you do and when you sent the invoice, you no longer hear from them.
….the customer had a great time at the cake tasting but didn’t book with you.
….the customer is indecisive, so they need to think about it or ask their partner.

All these things are just so disappointing and frustrating.

How are you to grow your cake business when customers are not booking cakes with you, much less about making any money?

You have tried various tactics-

-You try to learn a new sales method to get them to book with you;
-You try to copy another baker.
You are just overwhelmed because you have tried everything and it’s like nothing is changing.

There can be various reasons why customers are not booking with you, it could be that  they can sense your desperation, or your selling skills is not that good, or it could be your location, prices, your branding, it could be a lot of things.

So to help you, here are 7 things you need to do to start making potential customers book with you.

IS PRICING YOUR CAKES A PROBLEM FOR YOU?

Register for our Pricing Masterclass here.

Tip 1: Be sure to talk to at least 2-5 people every day about your cake business

Talk to people. Tell them what you do.

You cannot just sit with your phone every day hoping that customers will magically appear.

Too many bakers rely on the Hoping and Praying Method for getting customers and really it doesn’t work.

Spending time looking at recipes or just posting occasionally on Facebook will not make you the type of money you need to sustain your business. You must get out of the house.

If you are determined and make a commitment to talk to 2-5 different people about the type of cakes you make, and what you can do for them, you’ll be surprised at the change this can make in your business. Don’t forget to give them your business cards or flier.

ri51

Tip 2: Know where your target market is and go and meet them

Same thing with the above. Yes you should talk with people everyday. But you can go one step further and talk to your right people. If you are selling wedding cakes and you mostly talk to mothers, you won’t be getting many orders for wedding cakes.

You need to do your research, find out where your ideal customers hang out and go and market there.

If your ideal customers are mothers, you need to go to schools, churches, bible study groups, PTA groups and so on.

Tip 3: Be present on  social media Groups

Be very visible on various social media groups especially on Facebook and Instagram. But don’t just join those groups and be silent. Make yourself noticeable by providing value, support and help.

This is a long term marketing strategy so don’t expect to get customers right away.

Remember people have to see you more than 7 times before they will even think of ordering from you. That’s why you need to be very present in these groups.

So join these groups add great, valuable, content, answer questions, engage in conversations. This will help you build your know, like and trust factor.

ri52

Tip 4: Follow up.

You need to follow up. You can be leaving money on the table if you do not follow up.

If an inquiry fails to get back to you, call them up and ask them if they wish to go ahead with the order. If after sending your quote, you do not hear from them, call them and give them other price options to meet their budget.

So if you want more money, make sure you follow up and you will see an improvement to your sales.

Tip 5: Stand out from the crowd

The baking industry has a lot of competition and all bakers are going after the same customers. So you need to do something to make them come from you.

One idea is to offer them something free to pull them to you. Tell them that if they order a cake from you, they will get a free box of cupcakes. Just make sure you’re giving something away of value. Something that you can charge for.

aug3

Tip 6: Be a solution provider

You’re in business so you can offer solutions to customer’s problems. Think about what solutions you can offer to solve your customer’s problems.

As a baker, you make cakes to mark memorable occasions. What if you come across a customer who need a cake urgently for that day, can you solve that problem? Or if a customer also needs help decorating the cake table, can you do that?

Just think of common issues that may crop up when someone needs a cake and market what solutions you can offer them.

Tip 7: Ask for referrals

Your happy and satisfied customers are happy to recommend your business.  Reach out to your customers and ask them if they know anyone that has a birthday coming up and if they make an order, then that customer will get something for free sent to them.

Will love to hear from you. Can you think of any any additional ways to make potential customers book from you or have you tried some of these tips. How did it work for you? Comment below please.

6 Rules For Success In Your Cake Business

We all want success. We want to be successful in life, in our finances, in our families and in our business.

To have a successful business, it takes a lot of time, sacrifice and hard work. You could fail at a number of things trying to reach your goal but the important thing is to never give up.

Success is not a straight line; it consists of a lot of loops, working through the night, not spending time with the kids, lots of No’s and rejections. Very much like this picture. But eventually we will get our breakthrough.

 ri18

To make things a tad bit easier I have compiled 6 rules of success to help you In your cake business so the road to your success can be a little less crooked.

RULE #1: Stick to one thing

Apple has the iPhone. Coca Cola sells carbonated drinks. Sony does electronics.

The most successful companies and people always have one thing they’re known for. And they focus on refining and honing that particular skill.

This is the opposite of what most people think. Most people think they have to stay “busy”, do a lot of business at the same time, do lots of things to be successful.

Have you come across a serial entrepreneur, one that does a number of things at the same time? She sells clothes, does small chops, sells cakes and also a party planner.

If you are selling cakes stick to it. If you don’t, you will only confuse your customers. Who may not be sure what exactly you do.

Yes you can do other business relating to the food industry if you cannot help yourself.

Real success comes from a focus on doing the right things one at a time not more things just for the sake of doing them.

That’s one of the key reasons I created the Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business. This is where i give you a step-by-step system, on how to price and grow your cake business. Register to be on the waiting list here and you will be informed when it opens.

If you want to build a successful cake business in 2018, I’d encourage you to stick to selling cakes and only bakery related products until you are successful.

ri19

RULE #2: Don’t skip on Quality

The success of any cake business depends largely on the quality of your cakes. Develop a range of baked goods that stand apart from those sold at other places or other cake businesses.

Creating a niche for yourself, such as stunning cupcakes or unusual pastries, can help set you apart and build a loyal customer base. Even the most beautiful cake will not impress anyone if it does not taste good, though, so take the time to build your skills and learn proper techniques to create delicious treats that will ensure repeat customers for your business.

RULE #3: Ask for referrals

Word of mouth is essential for the growth of your cake business. You can sustain a good income by just having your loyal customers vouch for your business. To encourage this, here are a few ideas:

  • When you deliver a cake, give the customer some of your business cards and encourage them to share with their friends.
  • If a customer sends you a message that they liked your cakes, thank them and then send them a link to your Facebook business page asking them to leave a review.
  • Make it easy for your customers to give referrals and support your business. Tell them how much you appreciate them recommending your business.
  • Tell your customers that if they recommend your business to a friend and that friend makes an order, they will receive a free box of cupcakes as a thank you.

 ri22

RULE #4: Research your market

You should research the market to determine how you can give potential customers what they want — and how much they are willing to pay for it.

For example, there may be a lack of sugar free baked products in your area, and focusing your business on those types of items can attract customers and increase your chances of success.

No matter what you choose to specialize in, you should set prices that reflect those costs, and the cost of your time to create those type of baked goods. For example, if you use only high quality ingredients, your costs will be higher than average, and your prices need to reflect those costs.

RULE #5: Set rules for your business

As a cake business owner, to avoid challenges or problems it is good to set rules or policies in place that allow you to better serve your clients. Some rules you can set in your business are:

  • Demand a deposit- when you require a deposit when placing an order, it means spending your limited time with only people who are seriousabout ordering a cake
  • If it is a large order, like a wedding cake, they must pay the balance in full, 2 weeks in advance.
  • Make it a standard that Friends and Family only get a 20% discount. Friends and family can be our worst customers; they make last minute orders and want it for free. So when such family want a cake, you can tell them that you are a growing business and cannot give them a free cake but will give them a 20% friends and family discount.
  • Set a minimum order so you do not have to deal with people who only want to order 2 cupcakes.

ri21

RULE #6: Dream Big

I came across a saying that someone said. The saying goes thus, “You can either start a local coffee shop or you can start Starbucks. Either way you’ll work the same amount of time, so it’s better to start Starbucks.

What this means is that there is no reason to think small. Dream big and have big goals.

Each month I set a series of goals. The money I want to make, the products I want to create and sell, the books I want to read. Every day is planned at achieving my ultimate goal of having a mega successful and profitable cake business.

It’s vital you have a deep purpose, a goal, something that makes you jump out of bed each morning. If not you will just be going day by day going with the flow.

In the Pricing your cakes right to build a money making cake business I provide goal planning workbooks, action plan and marketing plans to help you get started in planning your cake business success. Register for the master class here.

How To Stop Attracting Customers Who Just Want Cheap Cakes

As a cake business owner, you have probably been in a situation where you felt only customers who want cheap cakes call you or you mostly attract customers who are not willing to pay the right amount for your cakes or do not appreciate the quality of work you put into a cake. For most business owners, this is not strange at all.

Most people do not know the skill, effort and resources that go into making a cake so they undervalue your work or they want to pay as little as possible.

Most times we cave into their bullying and demands and end up under pricing ourselves, making no money and then feeling bad afterwards.

These types of clients are ‘low quality’ customers, and they are everywhere so there is little you can do to change that.

Instead of trying to convince these types of customers to pay the correct price for your cakes, your business should focus on attracting ‘high end’ customers or those customers who can afford your cakes.

And here are some 5 ways to attract them:

  1. Create a Customer Profile

To attract high-end clients, you must first know who they are, what they like, what types of cakes they like, and what products or services they need, where they are, where they go to, what attracts them and so on. Then find ways to

Finally, look at customer circumstances to create an idea of how potential customers develop an interest in your product or service. Then just go and market to them.

Doing so will give you a roadmap of what your marketing strategy will be like.

For instance, you may need to find a contact in a school in a high brow area to see whether you can sponsor an event by bringing in your cakes or provide cakes for free at their next PTA meeting. When you are in, make connections, talk to them about your business and give out your business cards.

Once you get past the “unknown and untasted” hurdle, you should have a much easier time selling to them.

xx143

2. Let Price Reflect the Quality of your cakes

If a business wants to appear thoroughly competitive and professional, the price it charges should always reflect quality like no other.

When a price is too cheap, it means the product is of low quality and so people will not expect to pay much for it.

If the business is using high quality ingredients, your website is up to par, your service is impeccable; in the mind of the wealthy, there’s no reason for your cakes to be cheap.

If your prices are higher than the rest. Then there is a reason for that. Let them see it in the services you render and also tell them why.

3. Pay attention to packaging

Good quality packaging is a great way to make your products stand out from the crowd. Not only will unique packaging make your products memorable, but packaging has been found to be one of the most important aspects when it comes to a customer’s decision to buy a product especially the high end ones.

Having beautiful packaging sets it apart from mass-produced generic offerings.

Great packaging should be part of your cake business branding and deserves plenty of attention. Presenting your products in gorgeous packaging reinforces the idea that when it comes to your bakery products that you are classy, top notch and worth the extra naira spent.

xx141

4. Offer Great and consistent Customer Service

Be ready to attend to their needs, be classy, eloquent in your phone conversations and consistently ready to help because high end clients are used to impeccable service. Also they do not like to wait.

If you are unable to give them a price at once, tell them you will give them a quote in 10 mins, and keep to that time. Send out your invoices on time. If you tell them you are to deliver at a certain time, make damn sure you arrive at that time or even before.

Also after care is important, send a thank you email asking them how their event went and if the cake was satisfactory. If it was a very big order, a few days later you can send them a thank you card with a box of cupcakes. It is all about keeping you in their mind.

5. Be willing to spend more to attract quality clients

Like attracts like. If you want to attract high income people, then your business has to appeal to them. Wear custom attire with your branded logo on it. Again pay attention to what you are posting online, upgrade your website. Get real email addresses that contain your domain name. Always be looking to be featured in the media.

You are an expert at what you are doing, so be seen as such. Do live shows on your social media platforms. Look at collaborating with companies where your target customers patronise. Advertise where you will reach quality clients.  You may need to invest time and money in branding, marketing, materials, events, technology, and lastly your personal image.

If you want to play with the big boys, you must be willing to do the work. There is no magic wand you can wave to get the customers you want, but as long as you follow these tips and make plans in your marketing strategy you should start getting the right customers.

It’s far easier to grow a successful business by targeting the higher end of the market rather than dealing with difficult consumers who argue about your price. Just make sure you are positioned for success by creating a new marketing strategy that will target and appeal to the upper end of the market.

In the end it will be worth it!

5 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR CAKE BUSINESS IN 2018

We all want this year to be better than last year. We dream of how our lives will be if we had more money, less bills, a bigger house, a car, less weight and so on.

So instead of dreaming, what are you going to do about it? What are you going to do differently this year to make your cake business better?

What practical steps are you going to do to achieve your dreams?

Well here is a plan for you:

  1. GET PLANNING

How can you make 2018 different for your Cake Business?

If you haven’t taken the time to sit down and plan your goals for this year – NOW is the time to do it.

Think about what you want to achieve this 2018.
How much money do you want to make each month from your business?

How do you want your Cake Business to GROW this year?

What business courses are you going to take this year

What new equipment do you want to buy this year?
To successfully achieve a goal, you need to have an action plan

Knowing exactly what you want  this year, breaking these steps down into little tasks you can complete daily will ensure you will reach your goals.

Don’t continue to go into this year without your plan. Write it down! Create a schedule of each task for each week.

What didn’t you do in 2017 that your regret now? What needs to change this year so you aren’t repeating next year?

How will your cake business be different this year so you are being a better business owner?

Don’t wait by the phone waiting for customers. Come up with a strategy for getting customers.

Use this month to create a personal development plan that will help you think of ways to make more money and attract clients for your business.

xx103

  1. TAKE GOOD PHOTOS OF YOUR CAKES

Taking beautiful, high quality photos of your cakes should be as important as making a good quality cake. Your cakes being visually appealing will make more potential customers stay on your social media page.

You don’t have to own an expensive digital camera to take good photos. A smartphone can take good pictures.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when photographing your cakes:

  • Use natural light-– nothing beats it. It makes colours pop and whites true.
  • Use a white background. Don’t put anything behind a cake that competes for your attention. Make the cake the thing you can’t takes your eyes off. A plain white wall is a great choice
  • Clear all the cutter from the table
  • Photograph your cake from lots of different angles.
  • Add props – flowers, macarons, sweets, a cup of coffee next to your cupcakes, even a hand reaching up to hold smaller cakes and cupcakes. These are all great ways you can add some drama or dynamic movement to your images and give your viewers the opportunity to connect with the image by imagining themselves in that situation.
  • Think of composition- Composition wise, each cake will be different – some have all the detail on the top, so shoot from above. Some sections you may want to show off are on the side, so a nice simple front on shot will be best.
  • Make sure the feeling of the cake shines through – ultimately every cake you create tells a story, just like a painting, a portrait or any work of art. Look at the images, and really make sure you are capturing the essence of the cake.

  1. BE ON INSTAGRAM

Instagram is the fastest growing social media platform today with millions of users and as a cake business you should be on it.

But before you join, here are some tips to get started:.

  • Only post your best photos, meaning well styled, well lit and with no extra clutter in the background. It will determine whether someone will want to follow you or not. It’s the first thing they see when they visit your account so make the invitation to follow you as irresistible as possible.
  • Post pics of all the behind the scenes action when you are making a cake.
  • Make sure your Instagram handle is on all your marketing materials and social media platforms.
  • You can create a dedicated hashtag and use it on every post. For instance, when i post something I include the hashtag #bakingbusinessschool. So you too can create your own hashtag.
  • Use hashtags for each and every post. The more hashtags, the more reach you will have.
  • Use your bio link to drive traffic to your newest content.
  • Post something personal with write descriptive captions. I have found out that telling a personal story  generate engagement and sharing.
  • Use a call to action to tell people what you want them to do with your posts. Tell them to share for a chance to win a prize. Find clever ways to get people to share your content.
  • Find local influencers in your market and contact them for collaborations. This usually means offering free products in exchange for a shoutout to potentially tens of thousands or more local followers.

  1. LIMIT YOUR SELECTION

Make cakes you enjoy and it will show in your work. Being a maker of all cakes will just overwhelm you especially if you don’t have much help and are not skilled in all the cake techniques .There are some types of cakes I don’t like doing , for instance, wedding cakes. I don’t enjoy them and I probably wouldn’t give it my best, so I don’t offer them.

It it’s smarter and less labour intensive to maximize on your strengths instead of spending a lot of time doing amateurish work on something you do not enjoy.

What types of cakes do you enjoy doing? It is ok if fondant is not your strong point. You can be the buttercream cake queen or be a cupcake master.

Your energy is much better spent on using your good skills and making them excellent by taking on challenging work that you enjoy.

  • Keep all your Business Invoices and Receipts
  • Keep Records of all your Business Income and Expenses
  • Keep a Ledger or Account book of expenses and update the ledger regularly
