Business Lessons From My Holiday At Disney World

For the past few weeks I have been on vacation. Went to London and Florida where I treated the kids to a few days in Walt Disney World.

Disney World has been described as the happiest place on earth and I thank God he has given me the means and opportunity to take my children as I know they will cherish these memories forever.

Going to Disneyworld is not cheap. From flights, to hotels and park tickets. It can cost a small fortune. And how was I able to afford this? It is from exactly what I am doing now. My business and not giving up on my dreams.

When we got to the themeparks I was wooed by the crowd. On that day alone, it was estimated that 60,000 people were visiting the Disney parks and it is not just tourists that visit the parks, the Florida residents themselves treat it as an ultimate vacation destination.

Almost everyone has heard of Disney, from their films, merchandise, characters, clothes, their resorts and parks. How did Disney become a household name?  Almost year round, people all over the world troop, plan and aspire to go to Disneyworld or Disneyland.

Disney world has been described as the happiest place on earth and I thank God he has given me the means and opportunity to take my children as I know they will cherish these memories forever.

While I was there enjoying my trip to the happiest place on earth I could not help myself observing business ideas which one can apply to one’s business. I’ll also offer some insight into how you can take these ideas and apply them to your business to see more growth in your business.

1. Treat Your Customers Right

When you go to any Disney theme park, you are met with happy staff that are very much happy to help. Even if they are passing by, they will ask if you need any assistance. I remember one occasion in Epcot Centre I was taking a picture of my kids and my mum. Of course i too wanted to be in the picture so me and my mum took turns taking the pictures. A staff walking by asked to take our picture together. We didn’t even need to ask, she observed a problem and offered a solution.

To be successful in business you need to treat your customer right, from the moment they make an enquiry, to the moment you deliver including after sales service. Treat any complaints professionally. Don’t take your frustration out on the customer. Follow up, talk to them. Find out their needs and problems and try to offer solutions.

2. Incorporate Different Pricing Tiers

If you’ve ever planned a trip to Disneyland, you know that the different pricing options can be a bit overwhelming.

There are different pricing packages, you can buy tickets to all the Disney parks or just a single park or buy tickets allowing you to visit multiple parks in a single day. There are even other packages where it includes hotel stays, princess makeovers and more.

So why does it have different pricing systems.

Because different people want different things, so it’s created a pricing structure to suit the pocket of different people so at least everyone  can experience the magic that is Disney whatever your pocket.

Does your business offer multiple pricing packages?

How do you do that?

Simply by offering 3 alternatives for the client.

A budget option, midrange and expensive option.

So you will be offering 3 alternatives to the inquiry, or example:

  1. Box of 12 cupcakes with butter cream icing is N5000.
  2. Small 8 inch round buttercream cake is N8,000.
  3. Fondant covered, 1 tier, 8 inch round cake is N15,000

Now with that, the customer feels they have options or a choice. To leave them when they say ‘Ah no that is really expensive’’ leaves them with no options at all.

But by spending an extra 1-2 minutes teaching and giving 3 alternatives, the customer is back in charge with now making a more informed choice, within their budget.

3. Be Innovative

The Disney I visited as a child is not really the same when I visited with my kids. It is much better. They now offer fast track at certain times so you can skip the lines and simply go on the ride. You can check how long you’ll have to wait to go on a ride and so on. There are constantly looking for ways to improve their brand, business and customer satisfaction.

In your business you should continually be looking for things to make your customer experience better.  Get feedback from your customers on how you can improve their experience, then find innovative ways to solve their problem.

And lastly.

disney 3

4.     Never Give Up

Did you know that Walt Disney did not just become a success.  He started many companies that failed. Instead of giving in or giving up, Mr Walt Disney never gave up.

Don’t Give Up – How to keep on going and never give up on your business goals and dreams

How many times do we feel like giving up?

If you do not want to admit it, well I will tell you. I do. Sometimes many times a month. I feel like giving up when I don’t get any orders, I feel like giving up when I see Facebook post of my colleagues talking about their successes. I feel like giving up when I am not making enough money to buy things for my kids or to pay some bills.

So do not feel you are alone in feeling this way.

Whether your goal is to further your career, succeed in love or marriage, become the ultimate cake queen, lose weight, or any other personal ambition, staying motivated and keeping your attention focused on your ultimate aspiration is critical.

Becoming distracted or letting failure derail your plans will never let you get what you want.

The only way to win is to keep on trying.

As basketball superstar Michael Jordan put it, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

In today’s blogpost, I want to give some tips to keep you on track so that you can continue to strive to achieve your cake business dream despite any setback, any failure, any distraction, and any mistake.

Worst Case Scenario

At the start of the day, think about the absolute worst thing that could happen. How likely is it that things would get so bad? Probably not very. Remind yourself that even if the worst occurs, you have what it takes to overcome any situation, no matter how terrible.

It’s the Journey, Not the Destination

Living in the moment is the best source of motivation you will ever find. Enjoy the day to day experience of living your life, both when things are going well and when you are dealing with problems. It will give you a better appreciation of who you are and what you can contribute to the world around you. So when you are busying piping your 1000th rose, try and not think of it as a chore, but something that could catapult you to greatness.

mm10

Procrastination Is Your Enemy

In the groundbreaking motivational guide “Success through a Positive Mental Attitude”,Napoleon Hill famously interjected “Do it now!” as a rallying cry for successful people. Never delay or procrastinate or your opportunities may be lost. Your time is the one thing you can never get back. Treat your time like it’s a valuable commodity.

Today Is All You Can Influence

Accomplishing long term goals is a moment by moment activity. You can’t change what has happened in the past, but you can influence what will happen in the future by focusing on achieving the goals you set for yourself each day. Do the very best you can with what you have to work with right now. If you do, the future will take care of itself.

mm11

Be Inspired Passion

People who don’t care, don’t succeed. Passion is one part emotion and one part commitment. If you have commitment but no passion, your work will be dull. If you have passion, but no commitment, your work will be undirected. But when the two come together and you bring real passion to what you do each day, there can be no stopping you.

Use Measurable Objectives

You can accomplish any goal by breaking it down into a series of smaller steps. Set a long-term goal for yourself, then create milestones to measure how close you are getting to achieving it each day, week and month. Mark your milestones down on a calendar and hang it somewhere that you will see it each day. Celebrate victories when you achieve your goals.

So I hope I have provided you some tips designed to motivate you to never give up on your dreams and ambition.

The truth is that nobody can motivate anybody to do anything. You need to inspire and motivate yourself most times.

The  techniques described here can all be boiled down to 3 keys to successful living:

  • Being willing to leave your comfort zone
  • Not being afraid to make mistakes
  • Not indulging in self-limiting thinking

As with all things in life, mistakes are going to happen. You can prepare as much as possible, but the unexpected will always occur sooner or later.

Successful people don’t let setbacks and obstacles stop them from moving toward their ultimate goals.

Instead, they continually commit themselves to happiness and positive thinking, no matter what happens.

By keeping your eye on the prize and daring to dream big, you can achieve anything you want in life.

Good luck!

I am rooting for you 🙂

me 6Rotimicakelady is your personal cake fairy. She is a cake business consultant and Coach.

She runs the Cake Business Owners Club where she helps bakers through Online courses have super profitable and successful cake businesses.

She has a passion for helping women who have a passion for baking, transition from hobby cake makers to successful and profitable cake business owners.

She also help cake business owners who have struggling in their cake business with strategies to enable them get more customers, so you make more money. Rotimicakelady is passionate about Cakes, business and making money.

This Is Why Your Cake Business Is Failing (and what you can do about it)

It’s quite disheartening when your cake business is slow, isn’t it? We start to feel like a failure, like this business was a bad idea, like the competition is taking away all the customers away from us.

Believe me I understand how you feel. There are many a times when i ask myself if i made the right decision in resigning from my job and venturing into this wonderful world of cakes.

There would be weeks when i didn’t have a single order and when i do i will be doubting my cake skills wondering if i am able to create the cake the customer wants.

But one thing i will tell you for free. It will get better, so please do not give up.

But you need to do some work and look at your business if you want to improve your sales.

The first thing you do is to look at your past track record. You either got a few or plenty of orders in the past, If you used to get plenty orders, what did you do? You need to trace your patterns.

However, you need to realize that what worked so well in the past may not work as well now because:

1) There are more bakers out there doing what we do on those same platforms,

 2) It’s much harder to reach your potential customers through Facebook unless you use paid Ad’s, and

3) You are still doing the same old thing, even though the cake industry have changed significantly.

If your orders are few and far between means that you may have not done much in the way of marketing your business. Like what platforms do you use to market your cakes or to tell people about your cakes?

pp66

So if you are suffering from low sales, you need to as yourself  3 important questions:

  1. How can i do to stand out from the competition: What makes your cake business stand out from the other bakers out there?
  2. What can you do to get new customers: How would someone who wants the type and the taste of your cakes you offer even know you exist in the first place? How do these people find you?
  3. How do you keep your current customers: You need to think how to remind your customers that you are always there for them, how can you always remind them to always remember you when they need a cake. Think back, do you get repeat custom, or do people order from you and then forget about you because they never hear from you again?

Once you’ve thought and answered these questions. It’s time to get it out there and MARKET, MARKET, MARKET that cake business of yours.

You have to realise that as your business grows and changes, your marketing should be growing and changing too  because the business of marketing is constantly evolving.

Yes, we love to make Cake but forget that we need to sell it in order to sustain a profitable and successful business, and although you may think that marketing makes you look a bit desperate, it doesn’t have to be that way!

THINK OF MARKETING AS A MEANS FOR YOU TO GET YOUR BUSINESS OUT THERE TO THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER

If You Are Still Getting The Same Results, Why Don’t You Make A Change?

Inspite of my busy schedule I try to read at least 2 new books in a month. I started this when i heard that millionaires read at least 30 books in a year. Usually I like to read historical romance’s but since i have started by business journey i only read business or self-help books that will help me improve my business and teach me how to manage my money.

I promised myself that once I hit my income goal, I will treat myself to a holiday and a trashy romance novel.

As you know I have launched my Pricing your cakes right to build a profitable cake Business Course. I put my heart and soul in this course and in the launch. I got a lot of interest for it, but was disappointed in responses when it came to payment.

It is just perplexing to me that here is a solution to most bakers problems and yet they are not taking action.

Anyway, this past week I have been reading ‘Secrets of the Millionaire Mind’ by T. Harv Eker. While reading this book it brought about some home truths to me.

In this Course I have just launched I have prepared an answer to most bakers and cake business owners problems. And it just amazes me when people just pass it by. A few years ago if I had come across a course like this I would have jumped at the chance, no matter how much it costs.

We need to realize that ”if you continue to keep on what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got”- Jim Rohn

That is why I created this course, my goal is for you to learn more so that you can have a better business. When you learn something new, you have a new way of thinking, new actions, and therefore new results.

That is why it is very important that you continue to learn and grow.

An author once said ‘ the learners will inherit the earth while the learned will be beautifully equipped to live in a world that no longer exist’- Eric Hoffer

In essence this means that if you don’t create the habit of learning on a regular, you will be left behind.

pp66.jpg

I cannot think of the numerous courses, seminars, books and training’s that I have done. I have spent thousands and thousands of Naira on them. It is not like if I have millions of naira in my account yet, or that I’m waiting till I’m a multimillionaire before I pay for these courses, But I never see it a cost, but rather as an investment. I know that even if I learn just one thing that will make my business improve, then I know it is worth it.

If you are in business and you are doing the same thing and not making money, then sorry to say you are doing something wrong and maybe it’s time you try something new.

We all know the definition of insanity which is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

bb16

In the Eker book he said ‘some people claim they can’t afford to get educated due to lack of time and money. On the other hand, rich people relate to a quote by Benjamin Franklin, which says that  ”if you think education is expensive, try ignorance’’.

And I find this very true. When I launch a course, I find it curious that it is usually the people who are struggling or are broke that say; ‘ I don’t have money or ‘ I don’t need this course or I don’t have the time. While  it is those who are actually making a headway in their business or those who are serious and determined to be a success that will find the money to pay for courses., because they know that if they can learn something that they can use to improve there business, it is all worth it in the long run.

Mr Eker also said ”if you don’t have time to do the things you want to do or need to do, you’re most probably a modern slave. And if you don’t have the money to learn how to be successful, you probably need it more than anyone’’.

If you come across an opportunity for someone to teach you how to run a profitable cake business and you are saying I don’t have money. What is going to be different in 1, 2 or 5 years down the line? I am going to tell you this for free, the answer is nothing. You’ll be saying the same thing at that time.

This is by no means a curse; you have got to know that for you to make money you have to LEARN how to make money for your business. You have to learn how to market, price, selling and brand your products right. You need to learn the skills, strategies and methods on how to have a money making cake business.

As cake business coach it is my passion, my goal to train and teach and show you how to have a profitable cake business, so you can move from whatever level you are on now to the ultimate level.

This past week I got booked to make a cake for over N100k. And it is not a wedding cake. As I said before, I have scaled down by business to concentrate on Cake business Owners Club so I tend to only get about 3-5 orders a month. This gives me time for my coaching business and courses and before I take an order it has to be worthwhile. I no more take orders for less than N30k unless it is for family or close friends.

How was I able to structure my business in this way. It was by investing my time, money and energy in learning how to do this.

Success is a learnable skill.  You can learn to succeed at anything. Your cake business can be a success.

So if you find someone or something that can teach you, you should grab such opportunity with both hands.

The more you learn, the more you earn… and you can take that to the bank’ – T. Eker

She also help cake business owners who have struggling in their cake business with strategies to enable them get more customers, so you make more money. Rotimicakelady is passionate about Cakes, business and making money.

So Is It All Worth It?

Yes, this may seem like an unusual heading, but I’m sure you have asked yourself if this is worth it.

I have been in this business for a number of years and i have had fails and wins.

When i started the Cake Business Owners Club, i was going in very unknown territory. Teaching bakers online about making their cake businesses better. There were a lot of things i had to learn and I’m still learning.

Sometimes the fear of the unknown stops us from taking the next step. I never really saw myself as a teacher. I just wanted to bake and that was it, but nowadays it is like if God is gravitating me to teach.

As you know teaching is not a relaxing job, you are constantly learning, thinking of new content, writing, researching, using media to get the word out, preparing new courses, buying books, spending money on training to improve one self, that baking has taken a back seat.

I ask myself is it worth it, especially when If you are not earning the money as expected.

When bills come and I’m thinking of how I can pay and i see the successes of other online teachers (not necessary doing what I do), I  can get depressed and almost feel like giving up.

But God always has a way, whenever I start to feel like that, I suddenly get a message from someone i helped thanking me for helping them with their business. that they have been looking for someone like me or maybe i will get a subscriber for one of my courses.

This just lifts my spirits and gives me the motivation to continue.

We all make comparisons, but I know those that are recording successes all started from somewhere. They did not make 6-7 figures in one night. It took a lot of hard work. So when I read about people successes, i don’t get jealous, I study them and find out what strategy they used, so I can learn from it and perhaps use it for my business.

Deep down, I know this is what God wants me to do. I enjoy what i do and i make money from it. I get the chance to work from home and spend time with my children.

So has it been worth it?

All the money spent on training, all the late nights, not having constant income.Sometimes it may not seem like it, but i can say Yes, it has been worth it.

So my dear baker, even though you are not yet making money in your cake business, please do not give up. Keep at it. And don’t stop learning.

You might say where will i get money to pay for a course in Cake Marketing, or pricing and so on. Or you might say i will go online to learn. yes, you can do that and read about over million articles on a single topic.

But if you find someone who can break it down, give you a step to step guided solution to your problem. My dear, shouldn’t you grab such opportunity with both hands.

I do and look at me now, I am on my way to living my dream.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. - Thomas A. Edison

In some days i will be launching my Pricing Course which we include videos on why you are struggling with Pricing, Simple Techniques on how to price your cakes and How to get customers to accept the price you give them for your cakes.

This Course is going to be epic, so be checking your inbox for emails from me. If you have not registered yet, just do so here. Here is the link to register .

Bookkeeping Systems To Have For Your Cake Business

This week on Cake Business Owners Club I have been showing and revealing accounting and bookkeeping tips that you should incorporate in your cake business.

I also hosted a Webinar on Thursday where i spoke about:

  1. Things you should start doing so that you are on top of your finances;
  2. What books you need for your cake business;
  3. Software to make your bookkeeping much easier.

If you missed the live Webinar and replay, well I’m sorry, access to the Replay has expired.

So remember make sure you follow my blog and subscribe so that you will not miss awoof like this again.

This past week on both the Cake Business Owners Club Facebook Group and Fan Page, I revealed Bookkeeping Systems to have for your cake Business.

In case you missed these tips during the week, here is a recap for your information.

Thank me later. Enjoy!

As Bakers most times we do not have a head for figures. We prefer to spend our time looking at cake pictures and trying out different recipes. Rather than tracking your receipts, remembering the costs of things you bought, having to put your expenses in a book. However you need to realize that you need to establish a record keeping process if you want to succeed in your cake business.

In this training I will reveal to you bookkeeping and accounting systems you should have in place to have a sustainable business.

Have a Separate Bank Account for your Business.

Do not mix your personal account with money earned from your business. It is vital to keep your personal finances and business finances separate. You can easily open a business account with any bank as long as you have a registered incorporated business. Most people will always prefer to pay money in a business account rather than a personal one. This will build trust and will make you appear more professional.

Have a Business Plan for your Cake Business

When you have a business plan, it is like a road map for your business. This will help as a guide in your decision making and track progresses in your business. You will also need to have a record of your income, cost of goods sold, projected sales. You should also set targets for start-up costs, on-going expenditures and planned growth.

Develop a Chart of Accounts for your Cake Business

There are generally 4 books you should have for your cake business

  1. General account book (a ledger)
  2. Cash flow account
  3. Profit and loss account
  4. Balance sheet

These books help you categorize all financial aspects of your business, including cash, income and expenditures. Also will help you identify types of expenses and sources of income.

ss6.jpg

Keep all your Business Invoices and Receipts

Whenever you buy something for your business like ingredients and such, always keep your receipts. Make sure you always issues invoices to your customers and once it is paid, provide a receipt and keep a record. Keep separate files and folders for all these paperwork, that is, receipts, expenses and invoices.

Having all this information will help you to reconcile your bookkeeping and even for tax purposes.

Keep Records of all your Business Income and Expenses

If you haven’t been doing this before, start from now on you must keep every single receipt and invoice that relates to your cake business. When going out to shop for cake ingredients, don’t add your personal shopping too. Keep it separate. That is why you should have a business account so that all expenses for your business will be done from hat account. That will help you keep track of what you are spending ion your business.

Keep a Ledger or Account book of expenses and update the ledger regularly

As said yesterday, you should keep a separate file for receipts and invoices. Once a customer has made payment, make the entry in your accounting book in the income column, plus the final expenses in the expense column. And remember to update the ledger regularly

Having a ledger will allow you to keep track of expenses and your business growth.

Review your Business Bookkeeping Accounting Entries

Either weekly or monthly you should take a look at your bookkeeping entries to obtain a picture of your financial health and to correct any bookkeeping errors. This will help you access your financial position and see if your business goals have been met. It will also help you correct any errors that you come across.

Here is why you haven’t achieved your dreams?

April is already upon us. We are already in the second quarter of the year.I’m really wondering how the last 3 months went.

We only just have 2 more Quarters in the year left. Soon we will be celebrating Christmas.

It is true that time waits for no one.

How are you getting on with achieving your goals?

I now realize that i really have to buck down and really work harder in getting to where I want to be.

Yes I have achieved some great things in the last few months, but i have not made the dramatic changes i wanted both in my life and in my business.

I am telling you this, because i want to reveal to you that i too struggle. I too procrastinate. I tell myself that there is still time and then wonder where the time went.

But one thing that has helped me is i always write my goals down. And not just write it down, but make a plan of how i will achieve it.

In this post I want to show you some questions you should ask yourself when you want to review your goals.

These questions will help you in assessing you progress, review your setbacks and make you strategise how to make things better.

  1. In Q1, what went well in your business?
  2. In Q1, what do you think did not go well in your business?
  3. What could you have done better to have achieved your goals?
  4. Are you on course to reaching your money goals for the year?
  5. What were your personal goals and are you any closer to achieving them?

So I am going to answer these questions for you, so that you too can do the same.

In Q1, what do you think went well in your business?

  • gained more subscribers in the Cake Business Owners Club
  • having a cake business tip show on Facebook Live every weekday
  • developed a new look for my website
  • did a few business training courses
  • seeing the Cake Business Club Whatsapp group grow
  • published an article in the Naija Top Baker Magazine
  • got more paid subscribers to my Courses
  • started a coaching program for clients

In Q1, what did not go well in your business?

  • did not make my monthly income goal
  • delayed in creating new courses
  • yet to establish a live workshop

What could you have done better to have achieved your goals?

  • to do more Masterclasses and Webinars
  • should quickly implement what i have learnt from the business training courses i have attended
  • to read more business books
  • less time watching TV programs ( I am addicted to ‘the real housewives of Atlanta’, ‘Empire’  ‘Love & hip hop’ and ‘Scandal’)

Are you on course to reaching your money goals for the year?

  • Yes I am. Have to be more aggressive and seek more avenues in promoting my products.

What were your personal goals and are you any closer to achieving them?

  • I am still on my weight loss journey. I have not lost much weight but i have not really been serious, but i am determined now and i intend to lose 20lbs.

So that’s me in a nutshell. I am exposing myself here and it is all for your benefit.

Just know you are not alone.

If you have not developed the habit of writing your goals, please start now.

Why I Think You Should Start A Cake Business

Starting your cake business can be a cake dream to some people.

I was so scared when I took the plunge to resign from my job and start my cake business. I had no business experience and I learnt a lot on the job. I made a LOT of mistakes. But you know what. I was happy. I was working from home, earning money, and most importantly I was spending time with my children.

So if need extra convincing to take that leap to starting your cake business, here are a few reason you should:

e5

You have a passion for cake

Do you spend a lot of time thinking about cake? Do you love all those baking shows on Food Network? Sometimes you can’t wait to close from work or  at the weekend to try out a new recipe. Do you bring cakes and cupcakes to your friends and colleagues at work? You may have even spent some time looking into what it would take to start a cake business but not sure where to start.

Then my dear, you are on the right track to having a cake business.

You have the passion, then go for it.  Life is too short to be spent regretting.

Stop making excuses, why are you working for another man’s or woman’s business, when you can be building your own?

If you have a job that you hate, where you spend half of the day in traffic, being with people you don’t like day after day, then you need to do something about that.

e4

Do it Afraid

Left to you, you can come up with 50 different ways why you don’t want to do this. It is because you are afraid. The uncertainty of the ‘What if.

What if i fail. What if no one buys my cakes, What if i am not good enough.

Instead replace that negative thinking with What if i am a success, What if i have so many orders that i have to turn some down, What if i make so much money that i can now buy that industrial oven

Do you know what is the No. 1 regret of the elderly?- Not doing something because they were afraid.

I spent years working as a lawyer in a job I had no passion for. I dreaded going to work each morning and being away from my children.

Yes we don’t know what the future holds. They are no really   safety nets. But you need to to take a step. Once you start, you will realise that it was silly hesitating.

So even though you are afraid. Do it Afraid.

You will be a Goal Crusher

People always say that when you want to achieve something you should write them down. So if you want to learn something or acquire a business skill, or want to start or grow your business, set it as a goal and crush it.

Once you realize you can accomplish this huge task of starting your own cake business  you will see all the other goals will be a breeze.

e3

You Will Become Ms. Cake Boss Lady

You will finally be your own boss, have your own hours, be able to dictate your hourly rate, plan your holidays and spend more time with family and friends.

Yes it is going to be handwork. Infact a lot of hard work but you will see that you will enjoy it so much that it will not be like work.

Once you know how to price right, market and promote your cakes, network, then you business will continue to grow to greater and greater heights.

You will become more smart

When I first started my cake business I had no idea how to run a business. I was like a headless chicken running around. I had no order book, i didn’t know how to track my orders, I didn’t know how to price my cakes and i will go to the supermarket nearly everyday to buy suppliers.I used to deliver cakes and wait ages for payment.

I was so fed up so I was forced to change. I needed to come up with a system. So I started makings lists, made order forms, had a diary , made note of costs of ingredients, noted the time it took to make and decorate a cake, and learnt how to charge appropriately and made sure that the customer paid me at least a deposit before i started making the cake.

So i got smarter, by putting systems in place i was able to run my business more efficiently and organised.

e6

You will become an avid learner

When you start your cake business you will start to see that you don’t know a lot. So its good to make a list of skills you don’t know and make an effort to learn them.

And once you get the hang of learning, you will want to learn more and more. Both from paid and free resources like… YouTube, Google and Facebook.

You can find the answer to almost any question on the Internet, so Instead of sitting around feeling defeated and frustrated because you don’t know how to do something, just go to the internet to find out the answers or find someone who can teach you.

Taking on orders from family and friends is a great start to get the word out that you are in the cake business , but after that, then what? How do you find more, especially when there seem to be many bakers in this Nigeria.

The Solution.

You have to start to advertise your cakes, but don’t fret, these options don’t require you to spend any money at all (unless of course you want to!).

The first step is to head to the one social media platform you probably know so well –

If you haven’t already, make a Facebook business page where you post great pictures of your Cakes.

Try and tell your friends to share your posts. This way you will be reaching a lot more people because Facebook favour posts that get a lot of engagement (likes, comments and shares. So you will be on top of peoples news feeds.

How to achieve your Baking Goals in 2017

2017 is just a few days away.

So what are your plans for the New Year, especially your cake business goals.

You may be thinking what does baking have to do with goals?
Well let me tell you,  a lot.

Baking can help you with your goals and I will show you how.

I’m going to break down the process of baking a cake, and how you can apply that to your goals.

So lets get baking with goals.

c41

Step 1 – Decisions

How can you bake a cake if you don’t know what cake you want to bake.

There are so many different cakes you can make. Such as:

  • Vanilla
  • Chocolate
  • Redvelvet
  • Cheesecake
  • Fat Free

And so on.

It’s important you are clear about what type of cake you want to bake.

Why? Because the cake you bake will determine the ingredients that you need.

Goal:

Make your goal(s) clear and precise.  This will help you get to your desired results.

 c37

Step 2 – Get all your Ingredients

You need to make sure you have all the necessary ingredients.

You cannot skip this step.  You’d be surprised at how many times I have gone to make a cake assuming I had the ingredients only to discover I’ve run out of baking powder.

When you know what is in your cupboard or store, you then know what you need to buy at the supermarket.

Once you have all your ingredients, then you can start baking.

Goal:

Get all the information you need to make your goal achievable and attainable.

 c39

Step 3 – Follow the recipe

How do recipes come about? Recipes are the result of trial and error.  Someone has gone to the effort to refine and experiment the recipe so you end up with a great cake,

So it’s vital that you read the recipe before you start baking.

Once you understand the recipe, start your creation. But trust in the recipe.

Goal:

Follow the steps of your plan to get to your desired goal.

c36

Step 4 – Bake

You’ve mixed together your ingredients and your batter is ready.

So now pour it into the Cake tins.

Goal:

All your planning and preparation is now in action, and you are achieving your goal. Yay!

c1

Step 5 – Rest

The timer has gone off, and now your cake is ready to come out of the oven.

But it’s still too hot to eat, so you need to allow it rest and cool down.

Goal:

Take a moment to reflect on your journey.

Step 6 – Icing on the cake

Once the cake has cooled down, it’s time to ice it, if you want.

Goal:

You may be completely satisfied with your goal and don’t need the ‘extra’s. But if you do want the icing on the cake then of course you’ll have to work for that too.

The icing doesn’t make the cake any less than what it is.  It’s still a cake, just dressed up.

d82

Step 7 – Enjoy your Cake

Your cake is now baked, it has icing or not.

So sit down and enjoy every last bite of your creation.

Goal:

You made it, reflect on your journey and be proud you completed and achieved your goal.

Are you ready to finally start making serious money in your cake business, so that you can get more orders!
