A Sure Way On How To Get More Sales And Orders For Your Cake Business

I am always getting messages from bakers asking me how they can get more orders. They have done the social media thing, given out their business cards, told family and friends.

But they want more, they want something bigger. They want to be fully booked out for months. So that each month they have like up to 7 or more orders.

So how do they achieve this?

Sell Your Cakes At Outside Events.

What do I mean by this?

Outside Events include such things as selling your baked goods at, food fairs, food festivals, church fairs, markets, interhouse sports competitions in schools,, charity events, expos, trade fairs, musical shows, pta meetings, club events and so on. Anyplace that has a congregation of people in one place.

You can make a list right now of places you can sell your cakes. Start with your church or mosque and then move on to schools and then sponsored events.

Every or so month there is usually a fair or festival going on. Such as the GT bank food festival. Also churches nowadays hold charity events where you can purchase a booth for a low price and you can sell anything you want.

These events are great way to make your brand known and to sell directly to the people that matter.

Not convinced enough?

Here are some reasons why you should do outside events:

  1. You will make some much needed cash

Fine, you will not make millions, but if you are short of cash, you can make a few thousand of Naira just by selling some cupcakes and cakes. And after deducting the cost of the stall/booth and ingredients, you should have some tidy profit.

Bun Muffins Batch Buns Muffins Muffins Muf

  1. You will get new customers

You will get a steady stream of new customers who have never heard from you. So when they come upon your stall, you will have a chance to market to them. So you are reaching out to your target customers. You do not even have to wait for people to come upon your stall, go around the event with samples of your cakes and when they take a taste, give them your business cards.

  1. You can even take Bookings there and then

As people come to you to sample or buy your cakes, have your cake photo album/portfolio with you and tell them that that if they make an order now you will give them a discount.

This will encourage them to at least book a cake with you now instead of waiting to later when they might have forgotten you.

Cupcake, Ceramic, Colorful, Funny, Loop

  1. Great way to get people’s contacts

You can have a little notebook for people to write down their details. As they come to taste a sample or to buy, ask them politely if they can leave their name, phone number and email address. This way you will have their contacts and can contact them directly through your email or sms campaigns.

  1. It is an opportunity to promote your business

You are meeting your direct customer’s face to face so talk to them about your business. After they buy, give them your business cards and tell them that they can order online on your Facebook or Instagram or your website and that all the information is on your business card.

  1. Free Advertising

Most times, such events will be covered on social media or even newspapers, radio or even the church magazine or bulletins.

So this is free media and social media coverage for you. Also there is usually a photo wall at such events and your logo will be featured. Take pictures on that wall, encourage your friends and customers to take pictures eating your cake by your stall and post on social media.

Iced Tea, Summer, Cupcakes, Refreshments

  1. You can run a raffle

If you want more participation and engagement. You can run a raffle where the winner will win a big cake. You can sell raffle tickets at the events for a minimal fee and make a grand display when announcing the winner.

This will generate interest and a crowd. Let someone be handing out your business cards or flyers to the people around.

Cake, Cupcake, Flower

  1. You will get out of the house at last

If for nothing else it will give you a chance to get out of the house. We bakers are an introverted lot and we like nothing more than being in our cocoon. But we need to go out and be under the sunshine and meet people. So even if you do not achieve much, you will get much of the needed vitamin D and at least make some sales.

I also teach close to 4000 cake enthusiasts through my Facebook Group how to run a money making cake business.

I have been featured in ‘Naija Top Baker’ magazine, one of Nigeria’s foremost cake magazines and also been a Guest Speaker at the Bakery World Convention.

Should You Take A Free Job Now On The Promise Of Future Orders?

Sometimes we may feel that for us to get more customers, we should  cater for an event at our own cost  or enter into an agreement with vendors who need our products and do it for free on the promise of future work, which may or may not happen.

You may feel that on this particular occasion you will do it for free, with the hope that that particular vendor will love your products so much and will be ordering from you for all their future occasions.

So what do you do in these types of transactions? When a company or a vendor asks you to provide your cakes for free and that they will start paying you next time.

Here are a couple of ways to handle these kinds of situations:

  1. Offer Them Something Of Extra Value

Instead of you using your money and doing all the cakes and they not paying anything. Why don’t you tell them that they will pay the full price for the cakes but you will add something extra like maybe free delivery or an extra batch of cupcakes.

Think of something that will be of value to them and offer it to them. So this way, if they decide not to order from you again in the future, it will not be a complete loss as they would have paid you money to cover your costs.

frosting-182849__340 (1)

  1. Offer Them Wholesale Pricing

Create a pricing list just for them.  In this sort of pricing, the price goes down as their order numbers go up. For example:

1-50 cupcakes: N700.00 each

51-100 cupcakes: N500 each

101-200 cupcakes: N400 each (and so on.)

This will encourage them to stay, but also encourage them to place the bigger orders with you.

hh24

  1. Be Firm

If a vendor says just do this job for free and I will promise you the next one you will get paid. If you are not happy with that arrangement, you can say ‘ I don’t work that way but I’m happy to negotiate on a deal that will be beneficial for both of us.

“How about this, I’ll do such a good job on this first one at a very good price, that you’ll come back for the second one, and we can talk discount on the next job.”

This way you are letting them know that you value repeat customers, but you’ll provide them that value when they fulfil their promise.

Too often, very well meaning potential customers offer us the sun, moon and stars– that is they’re offering us plenty work in the future. Too often, this future work never pans out.

x2

This was for an order I had for 100 cupcakes

If working with other vendors is something you want to start venturing in, then by all means go for it. It can be a very profitable market –  just remember that they are not working for free or cheap so neither should you. It should be a mutually beneficial relationship.

MOST important of all, make sure you’ve got the same target market as they do. If they do not have the same customer base as you …don’t align with them.

Align with companies and vendors that share your values, share your demographic, and share the understanding that this needs to be a win/win relationship, not an opportunity for them to exploit you. You are not the cheap cake lady.

Why You Are Not Making Money In Your Cake Business

Okay you have finally taken the push and have started your cake business, maybe part or full time. You are passionate about baking. You have done business card, printed fliers and have gone for training to improve your skills, but still you are hardly getting any orders.

And when you finally get an order, the customer prices your cakes so low that you are telling yourself what is the point.

If this is you, please continue reading.

The hustle is real but here are some mistakes you probably are making that is preventing you from making money in your business:

  1. You Are Selling Cakes that People Do Not want To Buy

Maybe you want to do something different, like maybe do different flavours of cake. Maybe you offer unusual flavours like beetroot, peanut butter, avocado, wheat germ, etc. Yes if you were abroad, you could get customers but here, there are few adventurous types in Nigeria.

So it’s best you stick to the common flavours like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, lemon, chocolate and red velvet. Maybe when you become more popular you can expand your product range after you have done enough research and offer those unusual cake flavours.

cd1

2.  Not Realizing You Are In Business

You are still seeing yourself as a hobby baker, even though people are paying you money for your cakes. Once money is exchanged, this is a business transaction even if you are selling to your sister or a close friend.

As a business owner, things become different. You are now a professional baker and you should see and portray yourself as such.

3. Not Keeping Track of Expenses

You have to keep track of what you are spending. You have to form this habit or keeping bookkeeping books and keeping receipts and not using your personal money to pay for cake stuff. A helpful guide is a webinar I did- Booking Systems for Cake Businesses. Click here and here to watch.

4. Waiting For Customers To Just Miraculously Appear

Customers are not going to magically appear. They just don’t fall from the sky. Yes it will be lovely if that happens. You have to go out there are find them. And that means you have to market your business to the hilt. If not you will just be staring at the sky. I have a marketing Course that can help. Here are the details.

5. You Discount And Negotiate Too Much

Once a potential customer starts complaining about your price or question your pricing or do not immediately order, you start offering discounts.

I know especially when you first start and really want to make a sale you give discount, offer extras, and promise all sorts of things just to get that order.

The problem with this, is that I might set of a trend and sooner or later you will be known as the cheap baker and you will be working for next to nothing.

cd3

6. You Are Not Confident

You are unsure of yourself or your skills. You still view yourself as a beginner or a learner. When you are describing your business or describing a cake you want to do for a customer, you do not talk in a confident tone.

You do not own the conversation. You don’t give ideas and just accept whatever the customer wants. When you do this, people can tell that you are a learner, even though you may be the best baker in town. You are scared of charging high prices, you don’t sound confident about your skills, you can’t really articulate why someone should pick you to make their cakes over another brand, and you can’t say no to the customers who price you cheaply.

  1. 7 step guide to pricing your cakes
  2. How to respond to customers who complain about your prices
  3. When and how to raise your cake prices
  4. How To Price So You Do Not Lose Customers

7. You Are a Jack of all Trades

You are one of those people that have multiple businesses. You not only sell cakes, but also clothes, shoes, toys. You also are a network marketer.  You need to concentrate on one thing or at least a similar line of business. People will just get confused not knowing what exactly you do. In your profile you advertise all sort of stuffs. If you are serious about your cake business and want to make a success of it, then you should let go of the others and concentrate on cake.

Whew!

I’m going to stop at these reasons ( so I do not overwhelm you), but believe me there’s still so much more.

There are a lot of reasons you might not be making money, and my question is always this:

“What are you going to do about it?”

“Are you going to allow  your business that you are so passionate about go to waste? Because if you keep going from month to month without making money…it’s only a matter of time”

How To Make More Profits In Your Cake Business Month In Month Out

We are in this business to make money. Yes we love baking, and yes sometimes it does feel like work. But in order to survive in this business you need to know how to make money.

Here are some ideas and tips on how you can be making profits in your Cake Business.

1. Understand Who Your Customers Are

You need to know your customers and what they want. Once you have that information, you use all your marketing tactics to target that customer base. If you are selling wedding cakes, you target brides and young couples; you have no business advertising to mothers.

If you are providing cakes for the lower end of the market, then you should be advertising and showing up in secondary schools and universities.

ccc2

2. Know How To Price Your Cakes

You need to know how to price your cakes. You need to know the cost of ingredients, your labour time and how much profit you want to make.

Don’t let customers bully you to accept a low price, you are a skilled professional and should be paid as such. It is your business so you should be in charge of how much you price your cakes.

If Pricing is an issue for you, get my free pricing Guide here: http://www.subscribepage.com/r2l3a3

3. You Need To find A Product That Sells Well No Matter What

You need to find a product in your business that sells well. This has to be something that does not take a lot of time and is easy to make and brings in good money into the business.

For me this was when I started making Swirl Cakes. They take around 2 hours to make including the baking and they are inexpensive to produce too.
The good thing with these types of cakes is that they are ideal for most occasions.

What should you do?

The good thing about this type of method for you as a business is that they are speedy to make, and they sell for a good price.

To give you an example, for a 12” fondant cake with a floral theme I would charge N21,000. It would take me around 6-8 hours to make from scratch and the profit on this cake would be approx N9,000

A box of 12 cupcakes takes under 2 hours from scratch to make, costs no more than N3,000 to produce and sells for N8,000  making you a profit of N4,000

However, I can make 3 Nos. 6 inch Swirl Cakes in the time it takes me to make that one fondant cake, netting me around N4,000 profit per cake.
If you’re savvy with your planning you can do this quicker and for slightly less cost too making your profits even better.

When you are able to do this for your products, your client is happy as you are providing options for them selecting different versions of the cake they want in terms of price.

ccc3

4. Know Your Business’s Peak Seasons

If you have been in business for a while, you should know what periods when you sell a lot of cakes. Do you sell more cakes during December which are the wedding and Christmas season? If this is so, you should plan for these by either getting more staff and making sure you have all the ingredients you need months before.

5. Don’t Offer Too Much Cake Varieties

You providing every type of cakes in every size, style and flavour will not make you rich. If you try and do this, you will be tired always, need a lot of ingredients and tools.

What should you do?

Instead choose a small range of cakes you will offer, for example if you have just a range of 3-4 products, you will have something to suit most clients. This doesn’t have to be restrictive at all but it does help you plan your time better.

For example you can offer boxed Cupcakes for the lower end of your pricing, then celebration cakes (birthday, anniversary, etc) for midrange pricing and, finally wedding cakes for the higher pricing market.

Your cupcakes can start from about N3,000, which are ideal for a small gifts.
Your mid-range celebration cakes can be from N10,000 for a 6 inch cake, these are cakes for bigger celebrations like a party or significant birthday.

Then finally your custom or  bespoke range is where your prices aren’t fixed as they are based on the hours that the cake will take you and the skill you will need to devote to it.

By having these distinct tiers of product your client will never be scared off by your pricing and if they would like a custom but haven’t got the budget then you have your celebration range to suit their needs and budget.

ccc5

6. Create Good Cakes

The best marketing you can do for your cake business is to make sure that your cakes are tasty and of high quality, that is, using quality ingredients.

Once your cakes are fabulous, you are certain that your customers will keep on returning and will spread the word.

They are a wealth of marketing strategies you can employ, which I regularly give you tips, but the starting point is that you have to have good cakes.

ccc4

7. Provide Excellent Customer Service

You need your customers coming back, so you need to give them a good experience all the time.

Deliver on time; answer all their questions in a pleasant way.

If there is a problem, solve it in a timely and with a smile. Customers remember the little things, and this helps you in retaining and keeping your customers.

5 Ways To Keep Your Customers Coming Back For Your Cakes

After you have made a sale, don’t just move on to the next potential customers. A customer just parted with their money for one of your cakes. So it is a good idea to keep them as a customer for life.

You should find ways to increase sales to your existing customers. It will be a lot cheaper than looking for new ones. Those existing customers have already tasted and paid for your cakes, so the hard work is already done.

Here are a few promotional ideas so that you do not lose customers and they keep on coming back for more of your awesome cakes.

1. Do not forget your customer

You should devote some time after a sale to reconnect with your customers. You can send them an email asking them if they enjoyed the cake they ordered. This is an opportunity for you to get feedback and also get a great testimonial which you can use for your social media or website by the way.

You could send them a voucher where they will get a discount for their next order, or you could simply send them monthly newsletters so that you will be on their mind often.

mo6

2. Remember Things About Your Customer

Surprise your customers by remembering important details about them when you contact them. You do not need to know real personal details about your customers, it can be simple things like remembering their name, or their birthday or their spouse birthday or anniversary.

Once you have this information, you can contact them before the event and ask them if you can do the cake for their husband, or child’s birthday. It will be a surprise for them that you remembered and will take off the hassle of you dealing with last minute orders.

3. Make it Easy for customers to Contact you

If you have a website, make sure there is an area on all the pages of how hey can reach you, whether it is your phone number, or email or if you want them to order online. Do not make it difficult or hard for customers to know how to reach you.

If it is a Facebook Page you have, make sure at the top of that page are all the details of how customers can make there order. The same goes for your Instagram Page. Also, always respond in a very timely manner all your emails, social media enquirers or comments or missed calls. If you don’t you will be losing that customer.

mo5

4. Say Thank You

A simple thank you goes a long way. Show appreciation for your customers. You can express your gratitude by emailing your customers after a sale with a Thank you message.

You can even do more like sending them a discount voucher or tell them to recommend you business to their friends and if that friend makes an order they will receive a free box of cupcakes.

5. Communicate

Want your customers coming back?Ask them. Talk to your customers. You can send out feedback forms or surveys. This will give you a lot of information of how you can improve your business. And once you have that information, implement it.

Have more ideas on how to keep your customers coming back? Will love to hear them. Just comment below.

7 Things You Need To Do To Make Potential Customers Book Your Cakes

How many times has this happened to you?

…..the customer requests a quote and then they disappear.

…. You spend a long time with the customer talking about the cakes you do and when you sent the invoice, you no longer hear from them.
….the customer had a great time at the cake tasting but didn’t book with you.
….the customer is indecisive, so they need to think about it or ask their partner.

All these things are just so disappointing and frustrating.

How are you to grow your cake business when customers are not booking cakes with you, much less about making any money?

You have tried various tactics-

-You try to learn a new sales method to get them to book with you;
-You try to copy another baker.
You are just overwhelmed because you have tried everything and it’s like nothing is changing.

There can be various reasons why customers are not booking with you, it could be that  they can sense your desperation, or your selling skills is not that good, or it could be your location, prices, your branding, it could be a lot of things.

So to help you, here are 7 things you need to do to start making potential customers book with you.

IS PRICING YOUR CAKES A PROBLEM FOR YOU?

Tip 1: Be sure to talk to at least 2-5 people every day about your cake business

Talk to people. Tell them what you do.

You cannot just sit with your phone every day hoping that customers will magically appear.

Too many bakers rely on the Hoping and Praying Method for getting customers and really it doesn’t work.

Spending time looking at recipes or just posting occasionally on Facebook will not make you the type of money you need to sustain your business. You must get out of the house.

If you are determined and make a commitment to talk to 2-5 different people about the type of cakes you make, and what you can do for them, you’ll be surprised at the change this can make in your business. Don’t forget to give them your business cards or flier.

Tip 2: Know where your target market is and go and meet them

Same thing with the above. Yes you should talk with people everyday. But you can go one step further and talk to your right people. If you are selling wedding cakes and you mostly talk to mothers, you won’t be getting many orders for wedding cakes.

You need to do your research, find out where your ideal customers hang out and go and market there.

If your ideal customers are mothers, you need to go to schools, churches, bible study groups, PTA groups and so on.

Tip 3: Be present on  social media Groups

Be very visible on various social media groups especially on Facebook and Instagram. But don’t just join those groups and be silent. Make yourself noticeable by providing value, support and help.

This is a long term marketing strategy so don’t expect to get customers right away.

Remember people have to see you more than 7 times before they will even think of ordering from you. That’s why you need to be very present in these groups.

So join these groups add great, valuable, content, answer questions, engage in conversations. This will help you build your know, like and trust factor.

ri52

Tip 4: Follow up.

You need to follow up. You can be leaving money on the table if you do not follow up.

If an inquiry fails to get back to you, call them up and ask them if they wish to go ahead with the order. If after sending your quote, you do not hear from them, call them and give them other price options to meet their budget.

So if you want more money, make sure you follow up and you will see an improvement to your sales.

Tip 5: Stand out from the crowd

The baking industry has a lot of competition and all bakers are going after the same customers. So you need to do something to make them come from you.

One idea is to offer them something free to pull them to you. Tell them that if they order a cake from you, they will get a free box of cupcakes. Just make sure you’re giving something away of value. Something that you can charge for.

aug3

Tip 6: Be a solution provider

You’re in business so you can offer solutions to customer’s problems. Think about what solutions you can offer to solve your customer’s problems.

As a baker, you make cakes to mark memorable occasions. What if you come across a customer who need a cake urgently for that day, can you solve that problem? Or if a customer also needs help decorating the cake table, can you do that?

Just think of common issues that may crop up when someone needs a cake and market what solutions you can offer them.

Tip 7: Ask for referrals

Your happy and satisfied customers are happy to recommend your business.  Reach out to your customers and ask them if they know anyone that has a birthday coming up and if they make an order, then that customer will get something for free sent to them.

Will love to hear from you. Can you think of any any additional ways to make potential customers book from you or have you tried some of these tips. How did it work for you? Comment below please.

How To Stop Attracting Customers Who Just Want Cheap Cakes

As a cake business owner, you have probably been in a situation where you felt only customers who want cheap cakes call you or you mostly attract customers who are not willing to pay the right amount for your cakes or do not appreciate the quality of work you put into a cake. For most business owners, this is not strange at all.

Most people do not know the skill, effort and resources that go into making a cake so they undervalue your work or they want to pay as little as possible.

Most times we cave into their bullying and demands and end up under pricing ourselves, making no money and then feeling bad afterwards.

These types of clients are ‘low quality’ customers, and they are everywhere so there is little you can do to change that.

Instead of trying to convince these types of customers to pay the correct price for your cakes, your business should focus on attracting ‘high end’ customers or those customers who can afford your cakes.

And here are some 5 ways to attract them:

  1. Create a Customer Profile

To attract high-end clients, you must first know who they are, what they like, what types of cakes they like, and what products or services they need, where they are, where they go to, what attracts them and so on. Then find ways to

Finally, look at customer circumstances to create an idea of how potential customers develop an interest in your product or service. Then just go and market to them.

Doing so will give you a roadmap of what your marketing strategy will be like.

For instance, you may need to find a contact in a school in a high brow area to see whether you can sponsor an event by bringing in your cakes or provide cakes for free at their next PTA meeting. When you are in, make connections, talk to them about your business and give out your business cards.

Once you get past the “unknown and untasted” hurdle, you should have a much easier time selling to them.

xx143

2. Let Price Reflect the Quality of your cakes

If a business wants to appear thoroughly competitive and professional, the price it charges should always reflect quality like no other.

When a price is too cheap, it means the product is of low quality and so people will not expect to pay much for it.

If the business is using high quality ingredients, your website is up to par, your service is impeccable; in the mind of the wealthy, there’s no reason for your cakes to be cheap.

If your prices are higher than the rest. Then there is a reason for that. Let them see it in the services you render and also tell them why.

3. Pay attention to packaging

Good quality packaging is a great way to make your products stand out from the crowd. Not only will unique packaging make your products memorable, but packaging has been found to be one of the most important aspects when it comes to a customer’s decision to buy a product especially the high end ones.

Having beautiful packaging sets it apart from mass-produced generic offerings.

Great packaging should be part of your cake business branding and deserves plenty of attention. Presenting your products in gorgeous packaging reinforces the idea that when it comes to your bakery products that you are classy, top notch and worth the extra naira spent.

xx141

4. Offer Great and consistent Customer Service

Be ready to attend to their needs, be classy, eloquent in your phone conversations and consistently ready to help because high end clients are used to impeccable service. Also they do not like to wait.

If you are unable to give them a price at once, tell them you will give them a quote in 10 mins, and keep to that time. Send out your invoices on time. If you tell them you are to deliver at a certain time, make damn sure you arrive at that time or even before.

Also after care is important, send a thank you email asking them how their event went and if the cake was satisfactory. If it was a very big order, a few days later you can send them a thank you card with a box of cupcakes. It is all about keeping you in their mind.

5. Be willing to spend more to attract quality clients

Like attracts like. If you want to attract high income people, then your business has to appeal to them. Wear custom attire with your branded logo on it. Again pay attention to what you are posting online, upgrade your website. Get real email addresses that contain your domain name. Always be looking to be featured in the media.

You are an expert at what you are doing, so be seen as such. Do live shows on your social media platforms. Look at collaborating with companies where your target customers patronise. Advertise where you will reach quality clients.  You may need to invest time and money in branding, marketing, materials, events, technology, and lastly your personal image.

If you want to play with the big boys, you must be willing to do the work. There is no magic wand you can wave to get the customers you want, but as long as you follow these tips and make plans in your marketing strategy you should start getting the right customers.

It’s far easier to grow a successful business by targeting the higher end of the market rather than dealing with difficult consumers who argue about your price. Just make sure you are positioned for success by creating a new marketing strategy that will target and appeal to the upper end of the market.

In the end it will be worth it!

5 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR CAKE BUSINESS IN 2018

We all want this year to be better than last year. We dream of how our lives will be if we had more money, less bills, a bigger house, a car, less weight and so on.

So instead of dreaming, what are you going to do about it? What are you going to do differently this year to make your cake business better?

What practical steps are you going to do to achieve your dreams?

Well here is a plan for you:

  1. GET PLANNING

How can you make 2018 different for your Cake Business?

If you haven’t taken the time to sit down and plan your goals for this year – NOW is the time to do it.

Think about what you want to achieve this 2018.
How much money do you want to make each month from your business?

How do you want your Cake Business to GROW this year?

What business courses are you going to take this year

What new equipment do you want to buy this year?
To successfully achieve a goal, you need to have an action plan

Knowing exactly what you want  this year, breaking these steps down into little tasks you can complete daily will ensure you will reach your goals.

Don’t continue to go into this year without your plan. Write it down! Create a schedule of each task for each week.

What didn’t you do in 2017 that your regret now? What needs to change this year so you aren’t repeating next year?

How will your cake business be different this year so you are being a better business owner?

Don’t wait by the phone waiting for customers. Come up with a strategy for getting customers.

Use this month to create a personal development plan that will help you think of ways to make more money and attract clients for your business.

xx103

  1. TAKE GOOD PHOTOS OF YOUR CAKES

Taking beautiful, high quality photos of your cakes should be as important as making a good quality cake. Your cakes being visually appealing will make more potential customers stay on your social media page.

You don’t have to own an expensive digital camera to take good photos. A smartphone can take good pictures.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when photographing your cakes:

  • Use natural light-– nothing beats it. It makes colours pop and whites true.
  • Use a white background. Don’t put anything behind a cake that competes for your attention. Make the cake the thing you can’t takes your eyes off. A plain white wall is a great choice
  • Clear all the cutter from the table
  • Photograph your cake from lots of different angles.
  • Add props – flowers, macarons, sweets, a cup of coffee next to your cupcakes, even a hand reaching up to hold smaller cakes and cupcakes. These are all great ways you can add some drama or dynamic movement to your images and give your viewers the opportunity to connect with the image by imagining themselves in that situation.
  • Think of composition- Composition wise, each cake will be different – some have all the detail on the top, so shoot from above. Some sections you may want to show off are on the side, so a nice simple front on shot will be best.
  • Make sure the feeling of the cake shines through – ultimately every cake you create tells a story, just like a painting, a portrait or any work of art. Look at the images, and really make sure you are capturing the essence of the cake.

xx101

  1. BE ON INSTAGRAM

Instagram is the fastest growing social media platform today with millions of users and as a cake business you should be on it.

But before you join, here are some tips to get started:.

  • Only post your best photos, meaning well styled, well lit and with no extra clutter in the background. It will determine whether someone will want to follow you or not. It’s the first thing they see when they visit your account so make the invitation to follow you as irresistible as possible.
  • Post pics of all the behind the scenes action when you are making a cake.
  • Make sure your Instagram handle is on all your marketing materials and social media platforms.
  • You can create a dedicated hashtag and use it on every post. For instance, when i post something I include the hashtag #bakingbusinessschool. So you too can create your own hashtag.
  • Use hashtags for each and every post. The more hashtags, the more reach you will have.
  • Use your bio link to drive traffic to your newest content.
  • Post something personal with write descriptive captions. I have found out that telling a personal story  generate engagement and sharing.
  • Use a call to action to tell people what you want them to do with your posts. Tell them to share for a chance to win a prize. Find clever ways to get people to share your content.
  • Find local influencers in your market and contact them for collaborations. This usually means offering free products in exchange for a shoutout to potentially tens of thousands or more local followers.

xx100

  1. LIMIT YOUR SELECTION

Make cakes you enjoy and it will show in your work. Being a maker of all cakes will just overwhelm you especially if you don’t have much help and are not skilled in all the cake techniques .There are some types of cakes I don’t like doing , for instance, wedding cakes. I don’t enjoy them and I probably wouldn’t give it my best, so I don’t offer them.

It it’s smarter and less labour intensive to maximize on your strengths instead of spending a lot of time doing amateurish work on something you do not enjoy.

What types of cakes do you enjoy doing? It is ok if fondant is not your strong point. You can be the buttercream cake queen or be a cupcake master.

Your energy is much better spent on using your good skills and making them excellent by taking on challenging work that you enjoy.

xx102

  1. SORT YOUR FINANCES

You need to be on top of your finances to have a sustainable cake business. You need to establish a record keeping process if you want to succeed in your cake business. And these are the things you should start doing:

  • Have a Separate Bank Account for your Business.
  • Have a Business Plan for your Cake Business
  • Develop a Chart of Accounts for your Cake Business
  • Keep all your Business Invoices and Receipts
  • Keep Records of all your Business Income and Expenses
  • Keep a Ledger or Account book of expenses and update the ledger regularly
  • Review your Business Bookkeeping Accounting Entries

So please take these tips in mind and let’s make 2018 an awesome year for our businesses.

Would love to hear from you. What things are you going to do this 2018 to improve your businesses?

5 Things To Do To Stop Your Customers Going To Your Competitors

Whether you’re a big time cake seller or a small home based baker, you know how painful it is to have a customer leave you and go another baker or your competition.

It hurts. It makes you feel you are not good enough. You start questioning your abilities and wonder what the other baker has or is doing better than you.

Competition is not nice, especially when you’re the one losing. But that’s business life. When you are running a business, you’ve got to face the fact that you are going to face competition, somewhere down the line of your business journey.

So how do you deal with the competition?

There are plenty things you can do but the best approach, however, is to do all you can to keep your existing customers. Your customers are essential to your business because no customers= no business.

Luckily, there ways to prevent your customers from going to your competition or leaving you.

These tips you are going to learn will help to keep your customers loyal to our business so that you will have a customer for life.

  1. Know your customer

Have a thorough knowledge of your customer. You should know your customer — even if it is just their email address and birthday.

You may ask why does it matter?

Having a thorough knowledge of your customers such as their demographic, occupation, age, gender, motivation, hobbies, will help you know how to attract a customer and serve them better.

If a customer decides to order a cake from somewhere else. You should try and find out why they left. You can send them a feedback form and structure your questions to find out what are their motivating factors for ordering a cake

Understanding your customer better will help you hold on to them.

cake 8

  1. Know your competition

Know who are you dealing with. Do you know where your leaving customers are going?

The first thing you should do is to discover which of your competitors the customer prefers, and they prefers them. You can simple ask them or try doing some undercover work on the competition.

Find out what types of cakes they are selling, do they have a website, how much are their cakes, how are their designs, what additional services do they offer their customers.

A simple fact could be that the competition makes it simpler for people to order or their prices are cheaper. With this information you can now look at your business and see where you can make changes.

So do a little spying of your competition. You may be surprised at what you will find out.

cake 7

  1. Get your USP Right

What is your unique selling proposition or USP.

A USP is the reason why your baked  products are different from the rest. What makes your customers prefer you more than the other bakers.

Your USP is the reason why your customers decide to order from you and why they decide to remain with you.

Think about something in your business that makes it different from the rest. Your business is unique; it has its own personality. So think about what makes you distinct and special. Do you make awesome cupcakes or your cakes are fat free. Take a few moments and think on this.

cake 6

  1. Try Incentives to make your customers spend more.

One way to keep your customers is by upselling.

Here’s how it works.

A customer calls you to make an order. Great, but they only ordered 6 cupcakes, which is like 3k. Not much of a sale right?

Your next goal? Get them to spend more money.

You could tell them that if they spend a little bit more money they can get a dozen or more cupcakes and you will throw in free delivery.

Why? When a customer spends more money, they value the product more if they spend additional money on it. So it will make them harder to leave

The more your customer pays and the longer they stay, the more likely they are to spend more.

By encouraging upsells, you’ll prevent your customers from leaving.

cake 5

  1. Reward your customers for doing something for you.

Reward your customers in some way. Give them a freebie, a gift, a discount, voucher Make it valuable and desirable.

But before you give them something for free, make sure they do something for you. Something like what? Make them promote your business. Tell them that if they refer your cakes to someone and that person makes an order, they will get a free cake or cupcakes for their next birthday.

If a customers gets something from you for free, they are most likely to be singing our praises to other people and think of you when they want a cake.

This practice works, because it’s built on reciprocity. Reciprocity is simply just a mutual exchange. It means giving something to someone thereby motivating them to return the favour.

In Summary

In summary, knowing your customers and your competition is the way to get started, them with that information, you can hone down on your USP, try to make your customers spend more and then give then freebies for dong something for you.

In the end you could have a customer for life.

If you are struggling with getting customers for their cakes, I can help you solve this problem by showing you how to market, sell, price, plan, structure and brand your business so you are constantly selling to the right people who want your cakes

How To Get People To Buy Your Cakes

In order for your cake business to thrive, you need to find the right customers for your business.

Selling to the appropriate customers may be obvious, but many cake business owners struggle to find the right way to convert potentials or people who enquire about your cakes to customers.

Identifying customer buying habits is an essential part of marketing and growing your business. So, how do you figure out why customers buy your cakes?

This blogpost aims to explain customer buying habits to help you figure out why people buy cakes and how you can get them to buy your delicious treats.

By examining the buying habits of your customers, you’ll be better able to build a marketing plan that taps into the buying habits of your target customer which would eventually drive more sales.

So how do you do this?

You have to know how to make them buy from you

The psychology in this are called marketing triggers and i will tell you the emotional marketing triggers that determine why people buy cakes.

Emotional Marketing Triggers that Determine Why We Buy Cakes

When you understand the marketing triggers that make people buy then you can sell more. And you can find more eager customers.

Our emotions trigger us to buy

Don’t make the mistake thinking that people buy what they need. People buy what they want.  We are driven by their emotions.

If you understand the emotional reasons why your customers buy cakes then you can begin to trigger these emotions when you are talking to your customers or when you are marketing your cakes.

sp102

1. Love

What do your customers love? It might include their family, children, business, career, culture, hobbies, books, personal time etc. Do they buy from you for one of these loves? If so how can you recognize and encourage others with the same love?

Love is a powerful emotion. We do strange things when in love and in the name of love. People will shower their loved ones with beautiful and expensive gifts.  So you can use love to sell your cakes, like during vals day or birthday cakes for loved ones.

2. To show off

Yes we all should be humble, but sometimes people wanting to show off can be good for your business. Some people like to throw elaborate parties and the reason they do this is to show people their wealth, their home, etc. So you can tap into that if you do over the top , extraordinary and elaborate cakes that no one else does. So your cakes can cater to these sort of people.

sp104
3. Guilt

Often it might be hard to know the real reason someone buys something for someone or gives a gift. Was it love or guilt? “Is guilt the real reason behind spending a lot of money on Christmas, Valentines and Mothers’ Day?”

Can the guilt of not buying motivate your potential customer into buying your cakes? Can you use guilt to sell your cakes? Like saying in your marketing campaign something like ‘when was the last time you bought your precious wife or mum a gift, someone who has loved you and nurtured you,  then buy your mother a mother’s day cake or this lovely cake’.

There are also other  emotional triggers like Fear, greed and pride, but i don’t think they relate to selling cakes much

So I hope i have given you some ideas in your marketing campaigns.

Marketing is only effective if it reaches the right people.

Identifying the things that influence buying decisions enables you to leverage these factors to reach more customers.  Once you understand all these, you will be more successful when you market and sell to potential customers.

I will love to hear from you. How do you think you can use these emotional triggers to help you in your cake business?

Please share this post to your fellow bakers. I am sure they will get tremendous benefit from this information.

If you are struggling with getting customers for their cakes, I can help you solve this problem by showing you how to market, sell, price, plan, structure and brand your business so you are constantly selling to the right people who want your cakes.
